I’ve studied and fallen in love with JS Bach’s music my entire life, or at least from the age of 6. Long ago, I came to grips with the notion a human lifespan isn’t sufficient to hear all of it, particularly as it continues to write itself anew in the minds of great performers. I’m in my seventh decade of utter fascination and have just heard here yet another understanding of my beloved Bach. Life promises only to get better.

Genius = clarity + tenderness. Really? Its that easy? What the hell is tenderness? Clarity is a basic necessity when it comes to a fugue. It takes genius to be clear? Then every pianist student on planet earth must also be a genius, since being clear with your playing is lesson 1 on performing from most teachers.

What never ceases to amaze is the structural, architectural conception of this utterly complex music written by Bach over a longer period of time nearing the end of his life. Daniil’s seemingly spontaneous interpretation of it amazes me so much more. It seems to me that he lets the spirit of Bach guide him to heretofore unexplored heights of creativity. Daniil is a once in a century pianist and we find ourselves feeling grateful to be alive to hear him play.
