I think because they can do anything, they have nothing to hold them back, protagonist, the hero will always stick to their code and they're kinda frigid, they have to stick to that code and be a hero. While a villain are unshackled, they're free to do anything and the writer can be more creative with them

The way Johan walks on the rooftop pretty much solidifies his role in the story as this master planner who never lost sight of his goal and only lost when someone completely unpredictable happened

@Negative Honestly I didn't think about it like that. Johan, At the surface, fits perfectly into Lights new world. So even if Johan were working against Light he wouldn't even have a clue, And Johan probably would since Lights goal may be near Johan's but it's not quite there. Plus Johans goals would be much more achievable with the death note. With the death note Johan could take his perfect suicide to a much larger scale, Perform exactly what he did near the end of monster but so immaculate in size. Instead of just imagining his end of the world scenery, He could've made it possible for him to witness it with his naked eye.

Light won't even stay alive if the Nameless Monster wanted to get rid of him. Which isn't impossible. He killed people just by writing on a sand box. That's way stronger than a death note

I really recommend you first watch the 1997 anime that is on Netflix and then continue reading the manga (but with the anime you're fine I guess). Whatever you do, don't watch the movies of recent years, they are l0usy in all aspects.
