The Lab NYC is Mixmag and WAV's weekly live stream and post-work unwind, powered by Void Acoustics, where we showcase the finest DJs direct from our Brooklyn office. This Friday, June 15, we welcome Joey Beltram to showcase why he's considered one of the most influential producers in techno and house.
With a career dating back to the late-1980s, Queens-native Joey Beltram has been a guiding force in dance music for nearly three decades. With his debut release on R&S Records including the now iconic track 'Energy Flash', his career began with a bang. Beltram would later grace many of the biggest labels of the early 90s such as Nu-Groove, Tresor, Warp and Transmat. Today he continues to prove he has magic in the studio with material landing on Harthouse, BUSH, MB Electronic and Drumcode.
When not in the studio Beltram's smashing some of the biggest stages in the world, including Tomorrowland, Coachella, Awakenings, Nature One, Bonusz Festival, Awakenings, Rock-it open air, BLOC, A Day at the Park and Full House Festival, among others. Having him perform in a space as intimate as The Lab NYC is undoubtedly special.

When it first came out and Beltram dropped it in '90 I was at the Orbit, (the first one in Ossett in Wakefield that eventually closed when they moved to Morley) and it sounded so unlike anything else that was around at that time it was crazy, it was almost hypnotic but also blew your head off & all these years later 30 and it still stands up like he's just made it. The only other tracks that help start the shift to a more hardcore/techno sound in that same year were probably Nightmares on Wax - Aftermath and also Total Confusion - A Homeboy A Hippie And A Funki Dredd off the top of my head. Those and later tracks like Outlander - Vamp, 2 bad mice - Bombscare, Mentasm - second phase (also produced by Beltram), The green man - shut up and dance, Prodigy - Your Love and Dominator-Human resource were all massive hardcore tracks that moved the music on more in that direction & took the roofs off clubs up and down the country in 90/91 and years after. Some may argue my Energy flash is probably the daddy of them all, although they all had their time when they got released.

Can we take a moment to appreciate the technical aptitude this guy has? This whole thing is mixed perfectly - harmonics, rhythms and his playfulness with the spiral effect shows how much fun he's having for himself too. Hats off to a master at play

I have always appreciated and followed Beltram! His early Belgian techno monsters are among some of the most seminal cuts of all time! Energy Flash will forever be in my top ten! The first time I heard him live I was 15...that was 28 years ago! Also respect to the older gentleman at the front! He is clearly in the zone, not giving a care about anything else! Not standing waving one arm, all pretentious giving look at me! That guy has been bouncing since back in the day!

Love the old dude! A proper freak! Today, the ironclad rule of dancing to electronic music seems to be to never dance more 'wildly' than that you're sure to not spill a single drop of the beer in your right hand. (What have we bccome? This is despiciable and has to stop! Another ironclad rule of our present scene is that dj's never can push the tempo beyond like 128 bpm. What's up with that shit? And it's been like that for about 15 years now. Maybe that is one of the reasons people seem so low energy.) Anyway, Beltram = one of the Absolute Pillars of Techno! I ADORE that man! Peace...
