I honestly like how their relationship has developed. Joel clearly has a type, strong willed women who aren't afraid to speak their minds and strive for them to have the life they want. I really love Mei and I think she's good for Joel and I hope the series does them justice in the last season

Ever since seeing how remarkable Stephanie Hsu was in Everything Everywhere All at Once, she's one of my new favourite actors and I can't wait to see what future roles she takes. She brings so much charm, charisma, and strength to the characters she plays.

Sure, Mei was an intriguing character, but I'll admit that when she was introduced I didn't think her relationship with Joel would last. At the time, before they had Lenny and Midge get together, I thought the show was building up to Midge and Joel getting back together with a better understanding of each other (which I wouldn't have really minded, but obviously Lenny is so much better for her). Honestly, when Moishe has a heart attack at the end of the fourth season, and Joel says at the hospital that Mei isn't there yet because she's taking her exams, I thought it would turn out that that was a lie and that she'd actually left him or maybe even gone to get an abortion. But then she came back and genuinely bonded with his family, and I'm actually really looking forward to seeing where the last season will take this couple! I've really come to appreciate Joel's development as a character and it was so touching how Moishe accepted her at the end. Even today there are unfortunately plenty of Jewish families who would struggle with their children marrying outside the faith.

I think since Mei chose becoming a doctor over having Joel’s baby, he’ll either find out about it in S5 and it ends their relationship or, God forbid, she’ll die while having an illegal, back alley abortion. I just don’t see them making it in the long run. Same with Midge and Lenny (for more obvious reasons). I’m predicting Joel and Midge will reunite again by the series finale. It’s what the writers seem to be leading towards imo.

I would've HATED if Joel and Midge got back together. It just feels so antithetical to what's healthy for them. They can have a loving relationship, but that doesn't mean it has to be a romantic one.

I can tell you, it's not just the Jewish. I speak by experience.

this show hits really close to home as my sister is Chinese and a doctor, married to a Jewish man from New York (just like Joel). his parents never accepted his relationship with her though as she was Chinese, and my sister and brother-in-law had struggled with that for many years while they were dating. ultimately, they are married now and happy even though my brother-in-law had to cut off almost all communication with his parents due to them not accepting my sister.

this is how you write an Asian female character. Take notes Hollywood.

Gotta say, Jews and Asians historically and famously get along with one another. We share too many darn stereotypes it's almost natural some of our community members ended up getting married.

@@peacetea1001 I can't speak for everyone but in my experience: we both quite conservative groups of people (not necessarily a good thing, but a similarity nonetheless), both worship the concept of hard work, wealth and sacrifice, both got stuck between the racial/ethnic war between the Whites and Blacks and are derogatorily considered to be "secondary White people" despite also suffering through a lot of hardship and discrimination amidst the oppression olympic; both groups consider doctors and lawyers to be worthwhile professions yet despise being in the room with one. That's just a few things. Not to mention both groups have some of the craziest parents who wouldn't mind haunting your entire life if you ever decide to marry people outside the community.

@@peacetea1001 Asian who grew up in a Jewish neighbourhood here. A lot of it is just the silly parts of the cultural overlap. The way we treat elders. We love to gossip. We have a lot of aunties and aren’t blood related to them. There’s the idea of a matchmaker in both cultures. (My Chinese mother hooked up two Jewish couples and everyone told her she should have been a yenta.) Overfeeding as love. Worship on a lunar calendar. We love haggling and deals. Some of this is not politically correct to say but is just kinda true in a funny, laughing-with-each-other kinda way.

Let's be real for Mrs Maisel stans this is why Stephanie Hsu doing so well was not a surprise. She was outstanding from the second she walked into Joel's story. I am overjoyed she is finally being fully recognised

I love her for Joel and i also just love her character. Stephanie Hsu is so fabulous and i cant wait for more of her as Mei.

I love that he learns Chinese it’s so cute! And he’s not that half bad, it so adorable that’s he’s trying too!

I love all her varied hairstyles so much! Especially the beehives!

I see now why she was chosen for Everything Everywhere. I liked this show but stopped in the middle of season 2. Have to go back and watch it just to see Stephanie Hsu. She is amazing.

I started watching this show and it was only when they first introduced Mei that I remembered watching this video months before.

And then Season 5 put her on a bus to Chicago in the first ep and we never saw her again. What an absolutely wasted potential storyline. Either the show could no longer afford Stephanie after her rise in fame following EEAAO, or the writers had committed themselves to this "eternally devoted to Midge" storyline for Joel and Mei had no place in it.

I love that the father didn’t faint because she was Chinese or pregnant, he fainted because she wasn’t Jewish xD. And he wants her to convert lol

If Jobu is Mei in this universe, then Maisel is cannon in EEAAO!

That's because the character of Joy is Americanized, so her Mandarin would not be as fluent as her English.

That boy Joel was reeeally spittin’ some game with Mei. It was wonderful to watch lol

I really really like Mei, but I don’t know if the writers will let her be end game with Joel which makes me sad. I hope they are though.

I haven't watched the series after season 2 and I just stumbled upon this, at least I'm happy that they now cast actors that can speak mandarin for Chinese characters, not actors who pretend to speak mandarin with terrible accents which hurts my ears.

@@draconic1802 as we know about abortion, that won't stop someone who really doesn't want to be pregnant. She's really determined for nothing to get in the way of her being a doctor and because she is medically trained, she will know how to get one safely more than most.

Anti-miscegenation laws were passed in many States to prohibit interracial marriage. I'm fairly sure that NY never enacted them, but if they ever did, interracial marriage in NY was NOT illegal by 1960

I think this is interesting because its very hard to become a Jew unless you attend a liberal Jewish congregation (don't know a better term). I would imagine that in this time period converts to Judaism wouldn't be widely accepted. I wonder how accurate it is.

Only Reform Jews would consider their children to be Jewish since it passes matrilineally. Conservative, Conservadox, and Orthadox branch’s would not consider their child to be Jewish.
