I like how Joel is bent over and looks insecure the entire time when talking to Ellie, but when he talks about how he’d “do it all over again” he stands up straight and confident, because the decision to save Ellie’s life is something he doesn’t regret, no matter how shitty it makes him feel.

The only time he looks like the old Joel. Defiant. He knows what he did. And he knows that every single moment he's spent with her since has been despite it. He would rather have her fucking hate him forever than see her die.

What makes me respect Joel even more is how he knew that people would eventually come after him for revenge and was ready to accept the punishment for his choice when it came ("say your speech and get this over with."). Say what you want about Joel, but he took his death like a man.

Ellie could never really understand Joel's decision until this conversation. In her mind, she believed Joel did something monstrous, something that took away the really meaning of her life as the only immune person. But when she hears him say that he would do it all over again, it clicks. Ellie's life mattered more to Joel than the lives of suffering humans around the world. If he could save his daughter from the humans that would take her away, he wouldn't hesitate. Seeing this, Ellie tries to allow the close relationship she once had with her father.

I disagree. Ellie knew what Joel did and why he did it. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out. The problem was that Ellie saw Joel's actions and his decision as a mistake. She thought that he had fucked up and then tried to hide it by lying. She thought that it was because he was ashamed of what he had done. But that's not why he lied. He lied because he wanted to protect Ellie. To give her a clear conscience. To get rid of her guilt for as long as he could. To free her as much as possible for as long as possible. She thought he had lied so that they could spend more time together fully aware of the fact, that had he told her the truth, their relationship would have been destroyed. Ellie knew that Joel did what he did because of his love for her, but she assumed his decision had been a desperate and a selfish one. That he wanted more time with her for his own sake. She thought that Joel's actions all revolved around his assumption that she wouldn't find out the truth, and that he could keep everything a secret forever. She thought that that was the reason why he had done it in the first place. That he thought he could get away with it and avoid all of the consequences, in other words, he cheated. He cheated her out of her dream/fantasy/destiny. But then he openly admits that despite all that has happened, "I would do it all over again". That means that he did not cheat. He wasn't planning on getting away with it. He knew this would cost him their relationship. He knew the cost, and the consequences, and he still accepted them. It wasn't out of desperation or selfishness. Ellie has always known that he made this "mistake" because he loved her. What she hadn't understood was just *how much* Joel explains it for the first time here. He didn't apologize for it. He didn't justify it. He didn't excuse it. He stood by his choice, hell or high water. Because to him, her life was more important than the entire world. An otherwise admirable, sweet, and even noble sentiment, that was entirely tainted by the hubris Ellie perceived in his choice. And when he clarified the lack of said hubris, the taint was removed. He still committed a great injustice towards Ellie. But he did it with good intentions. For the right reasons. Intentions and reasons, that up to that point, did not eveb exist in Ellie's mind as a possibility. For the first time, she was finally able to look at this entire situation from a new perspective.

Honestly, I'm just interested to see how they structure the story. They've shown that they're happy to do flashbacks, but the first game is a linear story with some time jumps. Part 2 isn't structured in a traditional way. It's designed to get certain emotions out of the player in a certain order, dropping perspective in after the fact to make you rethink what you felt earlier. Hell, the farm was a natural end point and I'm convinced they added the California stuff solely to have the player emotionally exhausted to match the final fight. Significantly harder adaptation in store for them.

  • @theman1860

    @theman1860

    2 жыл бұрын

Sad yes. If it was empty then you misunderstood the game. It was nothing but empty. Ellie was experiencing very complicated emotions towards Joel, Abby, Dina and even herself! She loved Joel and all of a sudden, after Joel's death, her wanting to matter so much doesn't mean anything. She's angry at herself for letting this get in the way. However, this loss put things into perspective. Ellie felt very vengeful towards Abby but let her go because she knew that if she had killed Abby, she'd no longer be that person that Joel loved so much. Ellie towards the end finally moved on and you can see her wearing Dina's bracelet that she had left behind when she went on her quest to kill Abby (implies Dina took her back). This symbolized a new beginning for Ellie, one with hard won lessons and the scars to prove it. The new beginning is further underscored by her leaving the guitar behind which means she's finally forgiven Joel and herself. Ellie's misdirected anger throughout the game was fueled by her anger towards Joel for dying and herself for letting it happen (and for being angry with him) which she then projected onto Abby (who was also seeking vengeance for her dad). Very meaningful, rich and quite sad. The greatest acts of horror stem from the most passionate of feelings.

Seeing Joel evolve as a character to enjoy life was truly heartwarming. At the beginning of the first game, he is cold hearted and angry, absolutely refusing to believe everything that happened to him did happen. When Ellie comes along, he learns that he can still seek solace in other people, and finds new things to live for. Reuniting with his brother, spending time with Ellie before their fallout and living a relatively peaceful life in Wyoming were probably the best last few years he could have asked for.

People say Joel died in such a disrespectful way but they act like some random punk shot him dead. (By random I mean like literally a random nothing NPC) I feel like they wanted him to die all heroic like or in a badass fashion; if it was heroic or something I think it wouldn't have worked with the story of Ellie struggling to forgive him. Just before Joel died I really think he accepted his fate. He had done everything he wanted, and finally got closure with Ellie about something he knew he was gonna get comeuppance for. This is what Ellies revenge was about, she never got to truly patch things up with Joel but she started the first steps to but the next day Abby forever robbed her of that. Ironically both Ellie and Abby never truly forgave those who hurt them, Abby never forgave Joel and in her pursuit of revenge she alienated herself from Owen and in getting her revenge she didn't change anything afterward but set Ellie Down her own path of vengeance and that path claimed everyone Abby loved, after meeting Lev Abby learned to move on with her life and not kill Dina but Ellie still Blinded with revenge wound up pursuing it to the point of losing the life she built with Dina. But in the end, she finally forgave Joel and now, two people once blinded by revenged now can put aside their hatred and need for revenge and try to build a new life. On the steelbook of the game it has Ellie and Abby on both sides of it and it reminded me of a saying like "Like comedy and tragedy. Two sides, same coin. I felt the main reason Ellie hunted Abby down wasn't only to avenge Joel, but because of her own guilt. She shunned him for years after he told her the truth. And she was angry at herself that she didn't try to forgive him a lot sooner. There's a common theme in this game of consquences in habouring negative feelings and holding grudges. It drove Ellie to push Joel away before forgiving him while he was still alive, and it drove her to do things that were terrible along the way in looking for Abby. And those negative feelings she couldn't let go of resulted in her ending up alone, losing everything that was important to her and became someone with a shit load of blood on her hands. The only comfort I could find at the end was that Joel died knowing that Ellie didn't hate him. And hearing him basically say he would rather live in a shitty world with Ellie still in it resenting him, than live in a potentially cured world with her being dead.... he loved her so much 😭😭😭. He did precisely what my own father would do for me, and I fully stand by him. I think even Ellie realized in this moment why he couldn't apologize for that.

People who say Part II completely disrespected Joel are just plainly wrong. It honors the character by making him firmly stand his ground with respect to his decision in the first game. The reason the porch scene is the very last one you see is so that you realise that Joel would have gone through both the physical and mental torture that Abby and Ellie put him through "all over again" if it meant Ellie was to live a happy life of her own. Joel knows he made the right decision, even if it meant he had to die for it. He went down like a true man and this game demonstrates this even though it's not that obvious.

If the fireflies truly cared about Ellie’s life, they would’ve woke her up at the hospital and asked her what choice she would want. But instead they attempted to kill her in her sleep for a vaccine. To be honest, Joel did the right thing because he knows what it feels like to lose a loved one he failed to protect after losing Sarah. And Ellie shouldn’t have made that whole conversation about her. Its not like the fireflies were going to hang-up a frame photo in front of every building for sacrificing herself for the sake of all humans if society does back to normal.

this served as so much more than just their final conversation. take into account about the fact that Ellie is clearly reflecting on it rather than just remembering it. She realized that forgiving Joel could not come through avenging joel as it only reminded her of the hatred she felt for him in the first place. The main reason she reflects on it is because of what Joel wanted from her. He wanted her to keep living and to have an amazing life, the life he and we believed that she deserved. At the end, Ellie shuns her purpose of avenging joel or being humanity’s last hope but rather live the way Joel wanted her to live. This is her way of not only honoring but also forgiving him and finally allowing herself to be happy. The ending is far from a bad one as Ellie and Dina become reunited(i.e the bracelet) and when Ellie leaves Joels guitar, she decides to move on from her anger and forgive/honor Joel.

I will always stand by Joel's decision in TLOU. In reality, ellie was never really gonna get to make the decision either way. Either Joel was gonna make the decision to give her a chance at life, or the fireflies were gonna just rob her of that chance anyway. My stepdad played this game, and he absolutely fall in love with the story of and played this game multiple times. And as we discussed how we felt after I had already played the game years prior, his agreement in that even for a game protoganist, the game nailed how most parents would react to save their child. I know its a game, its just so fucking good.

Honestly aside from how perfect the scene actually is, its placement in the story is genius. By the time we get to the Abby fight we have no idea that this conversation even happened. We thought the last time they ever spoke was at the dance. But not only is it a great reveal to show us that their final conversation was actually a good one, but Ellie remembering it in the first place speaks volumes. This whole game she’s been focusing on the negative, and how could she not? But just this once in a moment very similar to Joel’s death, she remembers that her last talk with him was happy, and she makes the decision to spare a life. It’s brilliant stuff, I gotta replay this game soon

A small note about the music: The game didn't use much of the first games soundtrack and even the signature ronroco (the instrument which played the theme in the 1st game) was replaced mostly by a guitar and a "darker" banjo. The ronroco only only returned prominently in happier moments for Ellie. That's because for the most of the game she's filled with anger (guitar and banjo) and the Ellie of game 1 is buried deep. Only when she starts to forgive Joel at 5:04 the beautiful and hopeful ronroco returns. She even physically left the guitar behind at the end of the game. Another beautiful example is the zoo scene. At her happiest when she's in the shuttle (link with timestamp: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oYys1bOLctufeKg.html) the ronroco play. At the end when she sees the Fireflies graffiti the lies of Joel fill her with anger, and the banjo plays (link with timestamp: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oYys1bOLctufeKg.html).

But unfortunately, Joel died before that reconnection could happen, which just makes this even more tragic.

I feel like this last flashback had been a repressed memory of Ellie's throughout the game. If the player looks through her journal, all the drawings of Joel will have his eyes crossed out, the eyes of a loving father that this memory is meant to show. Ellie probably blocked it out after Joel's death due to a combination of the trauma and the guilt from her choice to sever ties with him. When the time came to fight Abby, Ellie did not see a monster, but rather a protective guardian to Lev like Joel was to her. It caused her to hesitate, but she still chose to fight a girl who had been weakened after a long time of torture. It was only when she was about to kill Abby that the memory finally resurfaced, and she remembered what kind of person Joel was to her. She realized that her desire to kill Abby was because she was projecting all the anger she felt towards herself onto her, so she ended her pursuit. The part where Ellie leaves the guitar represents two things. The first is obviously letting Joel go, while the second is letting go of her arrogance. That was shown with the moth symbol being emphasized. Her pride ended up causing her to push Joel away, and when he died, she was unknowingly unwilling to face up to her mistake. Now that she has let go of her pride, she can now live her life and honor Joel's biggest action for her. This is just my take on the game's ending. Feel free to disagree.

Agree. The lines and dialogues are just beautiful. Like this line "if somehow the Lord gave me a second chance at that moment... I would do it all over again". Beautiful and powerful line that cemented his resolve, that he did not have a shred of regret when he did that.... But also it cemented his selfishness as a character. Even after knowing exactly what Ellie wanted, hearing it himself from her directly, he'd still do it again, knowing it would hurt her in the future.

This hits so hard. We’ve all hurt someone. I had been with my first love about a year and a half before she had to move for her last couple years of college. We were mid 20s and I thought I was mature enough for it. Things led to a breakup that I initiated super abruptly and really hurt her. I could’ve done so many things different but didn’t and could have moved but got scared. In the end I caused the issues and it was pretty much all on me. The next 9 months were pure unfiltered hell filled with so much regret and guilt. Finally after lots of patience and work she let me talk to her again. When Ellie says, “I can’t forgive you, but I want to try.” It mirrors what was said but just a tad different. Everything about how things were portrayed here were so close and spot on. I cried. If you can make amends with people you hurt and they let you, NEVER squander that. Never.

And I think people suggesting that Joel “would have never” let his guard down with the WLF because of how he was in the first game is so vapid that I don’t even know what to say. It’s almost as if these people don’t understand character development and ALLLLL of the obvious ques that Joel has clearly softened. Those years living in Jackson (not to mention him being in his 50s at this point), made him a different person. Kind, loving, open, caring. Walking through his house with his woodworking, the picture of him and Ellie next to the picture of him and Sarah. He was a man that was settled, learned to love be more trusting of others. Ellie has a right to be mad but she CLEARLY loved Joel every bit as much as Joel loved her. I’m f’ing 40yrs old and I don’t recall any book, movie, game making me feel so sad. Idk how you can proceed with part 3 either. Ellie is completely broken, she doesn’t want to fight or kill any more. For her to rekindle murderous rage and to play that out for another 25 hours wouldn’t make sense.
