Joe the Quilter's cottage - heather thatching

Фильм және анимация

Preparations are underway for the Joe the Quilter project, which will be the first building for Remaking Beamish.
Staff have been gathering heather and learning to thatch ready for the quilter's cottage, which will be recreated in our Georgian Landscape.
Beamish and members of the community uncovered the remains of the original home of murdered Joseph Hedley, better known as 'Joe the Quilter', during an archaeological dig in Warden, Northumberland, in 2015.
We will recreate his cottage as part of the Georgian expansion in the £18million Remaking Beamish project, which has received £10.9million from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
The cottage, like the original, will have a traditional heather thatched roof, which has been sourced from Blue Mill Moor near Rothbury, Northumberland.
Visitors will be able to join museum staff and volunteers in learning how to thatch at the 2017 Georgian Fair - 1st to 4th June.

Next trip to England, I would love to visit the Beamish Museum and tool around County Durham. Beautiful area. Thanks ever so much, to Shannon Turner-Riley, for her wonderful Hello England Facebook page with all the history and photos!

Probably a silly question - why does it need thatch? It looks like it already has a roof.
