There are definitely jaguars in Texas, they are in Mexico and Arizona. A melanistic jaguar is definitely a possibility. While there there is no such thing as a black panther as a species it's possible that a melanistic cougar could happen. I have no doubt that 99.99999% of "black panthers" people see are something else. In Texas, and considering Joe has been around enough wildlife to tell a big house cat from a cougar, he may have seen a melanistic jaguar. I am curious why he brought it up and said he has it on video but doesn't show it though.

Black panthers do exist in Texas. I have personally seen them in South Texas while working in Laredo for the power company. Some of the locations are remote and are a perfect environment for seeing wildlife. Black panthers have been seen by other workers within the company as well to add more validation to the mystique of them inhabiting Texas. Hunters have also reported them on game cameras. Don't know why TPW would say they don't exist in Texas.

It did look like a mountain lion more than anything else but was a very healthy animal that was eating well. I looked up pictures of black jaguars but this thing I saw didn`t have a head shape like those. It had the mountain lion head. I had a pet bobcat at the time that weighed over 30 pounds and this cat dwarfed it and my hound dogs. That`s the third one I`ve seen in Louisiana since the 1960s.

15 years ago, my father and I were scouting Osceola National Forest west of Jacksonville, Florida. A black Florida panther walked out onto the dirt road about 50 yards in front of us. It looked at the truck and strolled into the brush and disappeared. After a while, we got out to see the huge paw prints. Seeing an adult black Florida panther in the wild is a once in 5 lifetime chance.

Pretty sure melanism doesn't exist in mountain lions, which ofc a florida panther is a locality of, much more likely a leopard or jaguar escaped from a facility, there are a few in the uk, only takes a few breeding pairs to escape and there's a chance they will breed and establish

In the early 90s in an effort to reduce dear numbers without relying on hunters the Kansas fishing game department released a large number of mountain lions and black panthers in the state of Kansas. they had a press release and were published in the local paper. The numbers were a little bit over 100 regular mountain lions and nearly 90 Black Panthers. these animals were sourced from domestic breeders and were released in the wild. I suspect that this event was not supposed to be publicly acknowledged because despite the newspaper article and the early press release the Kansas fish game department within a few years has denied ever doing this and still denies it to this day however large numbers farmers and those who live in the countryside have reported seeing those black panthers. The numbers of sightings have reduced over the years i assume that they did adapt as well as the mountain lions or perhaps they were mostly hunted off but they were definitely introduced.

Was spooky, nobody else saw and before I could grab my cousins attention it was gone. Wasn't until a few years ago I decided to search it up and found there have been several other sightings.

I also watched a documentary about a group of scientists who were trying to track bobcats in Texas. Apparently they’re everywhere even in urban areas, we just rarely see them. They’re so well camouflaged that even when you have eyes on them you can lose sight of them if you turn your head. Even the back of the ears on all wild cats look like eyes so you may think you’re looking directly at one but in reality it has its back to you and ready to run away any second. It was very interesting.

Joe I live in Texas and have seen black panthers while fishing. It leaped out of a large dumpster, chased after a deer, and I heard that typical large cat scream in the distance. Never been more terrified in my life. My wife witnessed the same thing. We were at Belton Lake.

State mammalogist (and mountain lion guy) for Texas Parks and Wildlife here. I'd be really interested in seeing the video as all of the big cat reports submitted to the state come across my desk. We'd be happy to discuss black cats with you all but here's a quick summary. The only wild felines confirmed in Texas in the last 30 years are mountain lions (aka cougar, panther, puma), bobcats, and ocelots and none of these have a black form (edit: melanistic bobcats do happen on very rare occasions). Jaguarundis can be black sometimes, but they are about the size of a house cat and the last confirmed one is from Brownsville area in the early 1980's. They are presumed extinct in the state now. Jaguars also have a quite rare black form. However, the last confirmed jaguar is from the 1950s near Goldthwaite TX. A jaguar could certainly wonder into Texas from Mexico, but it'd be really unlikely for the first one in 70 years to wander undetected all the way into central Texas and also happen to be the rare black form. When people do report black cats to us, every single time they have a photo or video, it turns out to be house cats, or intentionally faked. If someone does confirm a large black cat in Texas, it is much more likely to be an escaped pet of some kind than a jaguar. That said, wildlife can wander great distances and are tough to predict, so we always keep an open mind.

So, it's not that far fetched right? Since "black panthers" are just melanistic jaguars or leopards, no? Not to mention that bobcats can also be melanistic (although you said they don't have a black form). I'd say contact the podcast. There is an email on the "about" page of this channel. If anything, for scientific curiosity.

They've got another round of rolling power blackouts again, this time because of the heat (the last time was because of the cold, lol). I can't wait to hear right wing republicans blame it on renewable energy again instead of honestly criticizing their constantly ignorant deregulation attempts and how they can't help but make things worse, all to line their politicians own pockets with fossil fuel lobby dollars.
