How does he play these songs so perfectly live? Studio is one thing, but live is unbelievable.

Years ago Susan and I saw several concerts at the Hollywood Bowl. Other highly polished well practiced musicians that play perfect live are the Eagles (rip Glen), Eric Clapton and Stevie Winwood, and at other venues we saw Bob Seger, Van Hagar Halen, and at the Greek Theater was Chickenfoot where I finally got to see "Satch". They all play 'perfect'! Edit: Joe Bonamassa is also another one who plays perfect live.

Exactly. Not sure I’ve ever seen a guitarist play incredibly technical parts this perfectly live as consistently as Satch does. He’s one of a kind. His mastery of the guitar is up there with the greats. He fucking owns that instrument.

Those finger tap arpeggios convinced me that this man is an alien, absolutely amazing. He gave us a clue naming an album "Not of this Earth". Fortunately his species is not here to harm us but just rule over the electric guitar.

I've heard them all also. This is Eddie Van Halen 1987.
Every. Single. Note. and. Harmonic... played perfectly. Impossible.... yet Satch pulls it off. Unbelievable. No way is he human.
I have no friends that I can share this joy with - in fact - if I told them I loved the mystical potato head - they would laugh at me and say WTF - but to me, this is absolute magic - ill take this (and many others) to the grave - ill continue to dedicate my limited free time to listening, playing and enjoying this weird music that no one likes. but thanks to the internet - I know I am not alone :)

You’re definitely not alone 👍
What I have always been amazed by - is he plays this stuff live and it is nearly exact to the albums - BUT actually played - LIVE. Playing stuff with 20 takes in a studio is one thing - but reproducing it LIVE - perfectly - in a stressful situation - while running around and relying on pedals and for everything to go right - your strings to not break - your instrument to work etc . . it is absolutely amazing. His skills are insane.

Love the sparkly finish on this guitar. Marvelous performance to say the least. This song is still as impressive and catchy now as it was then. Wow.

Joe nailing all of the studio tracks "LIVE" with colossal tone and skillz. He's definitely great.
Drove a $500 hoopty from Maine to California in 1988 smoking Old Golds, drinking lots of coffee, and blasting a cassette of Surfing With The Alien on a battery powered boombox over & over & over.

After all these years he nails it.. Still amazing. Bought the cd, bought the tab book, saw him in Anchorage from the back of Egan Center but this tops it ALL... To see how he actually gets those sounds to come out of that piece of wood is truly not of this earth.
Stunning. My top 10 favorite Bay Area guitar players in order: Joe Satriani Neal Schon Dave Meniketti Carlos Santana Lowell Fulsom Ronnie Montrose Jason Becker Billie Joe Armstrong Chris Cain Brad Gillis
Been said before, but this guy is really very good at playing the guitar
You know that feeling you had when you just finished out your senior year in high school any skits the last day of class playing out on the beach with your favorite girl???? every time I listen to Joe Satriani, it comes right back!! How can you not have a huge smile on your face when you listen to this. Thanks for everything!!!!

Holy shit replace the beach with an old flooded rock quarry and that was me. Was thinking about it when I read your comment. Seems like it was yesterday...damn the years went quick.
That's real dope! "Flying in a Blue Dream" was my first Satriani's album. Then "The Extremist" was my second one.
Had the privilege of seeing Satch live with G3 (At the time it was Petrucci and I believe Vai as the others). Easily one of the best performers I've ever seen live, truly honoured.
Haven’t ever seen or heard anything so f-n wonderful. You rock on brother. BREATH TAKING! Mmmm
Learning this rhythm guitar section alone would open your musical landscape and showcase the infinite doorways forward 👽🎸🎶
I love how Joe can sell out big arenas just playing guitar. Sofa-King jealous. Its because his guitar instrumentals are so beautifully melodic, and composed to make you, yes, you, feel good. And to create such music, is a special gift. And Joe keeps on giving like no other!
From an album that got me through a very challenging time of my life in the late 80's. I am forever grateful, Mr. Joe.
It is evident that you are pure energy from the stars mr Satriani⭐️☀️🏄
Mystical Potato paved the way for The Extremist and Summer Song, but this one has grown to become one of my favorite Satch song over the years, maybe my favorite, amazing track. Joe had such an amazing run from Surfing-Time Machine, couldn't really get into anything after that.

The master maestro at work. This whole album moves my soul !!!!!
Glad to be back here again .. .. Oh Yeaaah . . .
Whole other level. Not many, if any, on that plane of existence
I remember reading in a Guitar World magazine interview many years ago that Joe doesn't play TMPHGT live because of the complex arpeggio part and that he struggles with the stretching of the fingers. Ive never seen him play it live but this was the 2nd best thing! Such a master! I love Surfing but Flying in a Blue Dream transports me to somewhere I cant explain. I got the cassette when i was 14 and have been mesmerized by it ever since.
Such an awesome groovy beat 2 this song.
His sound is just so fucking good, it's ridiculous. Not to mention his flawless technique, paired with his amazing tone it really doesn't get much better than this.

If you can, go see him live. The first album I bought was a Joe Satriani cassette. Second was a CD. ;-) Enjoyed G3 in CA and Joe via a smaller venue in FL, always a great time. Fun to listen to the albums, 10x fun live. Support live music, and support real musicians!
That right-hand rhythm guitar technique! 👽🎸🎶
Joey you are truly a remarkable boy. There is so much in this. It's astounding. Modern Day Mozart for sura
He has great musicians surrounding him .The whole band plays together thats is why its so clear.Just like in the studio.

Happy birthday to you, Joe! Thank you, for the music! You are, great musician!

I think this is the one that made him decide to never write anything sitting down again. lol Love this performance and that tone is amazing! The ending was *chef's kiss*
I saw Jonathan Mover play this groove with cowbells mounted on the left & right to create the original drum groove. More cowbell!
I love this man
This guy’s pretty good. He should consider a career in music maybe.
I love the ending at 5:03. Joe sneaks in a new harmonic color. The band is playing a regular E major chord, and Joe plays E phrygian but with a major third (or A harmonic minor if you look at it that way) over it. He uses the ambiguity of the plain E major chord to fill in the blanks with whatever major variation of E he wants. Genius!
Greate performans!
Just SICK!!!
