About the album:
Joe Satriani's most recent album is the springboard and creative center for his alter ego "Shockwave Supernova," the outlandish and extroverted 'performance side' of the normally shy and reserved guitar virtuoso. With this new persona as partner, Satriani launched his wildly ambitious 15th solo album, Shockwave Supernova.

I was going to leave a little comment giving Joe his well deserved props but I started reading . Totally agree ,that sector of the listening public that find fault in anything Mr.Satriani plays can definitely shut the fuck up. I'm 51, started playing at 12 and in my opinion I think he's #1 in my book. When a guitarist can separate himself from the thousands of top shelf shredders with a distinct style, sound and unbelievable skill-set as well as song writing talent that speaks for itself, that musician is going to deliver the magic that He's grown and developed during His career.... and whala I give You Joe Satriani. Not a puzzle, those naysayers should turn in their eardrums.

I couldn't agree more. Satriani like few others play from the heart and they deliver feelings through their music. You can't expect true musicians to play the same thing over and over and not get bored. What would be the purpose if you don't challenge yourself nor explore new things? I bet anyone to hear from his first album to the last one and tell me they didn't like at least one song of each album. He can deliver sadness, happiness, euphoria and so many feelings in one song. And his skills are unmatched, and I'm not saying he is the best guitarist in the world, but his style is unique and couldn't be matched not even in decades to come.

The fact that there are other exceptional, unique musicians, like the Buckethead you mention (whom I love), does not change the fact that Joe is what he is.

I have listened to many top shelf guitarists, and my opinion still holds of Joe Satriani being the best guitarist in the world. Best being not only his skills, but his heart and soul and everything about him being transformed into shred by guitar.

This song moves, rocks and swings all at the same time. With a tempo that takes you to a better place, regardless of where you are starting out from at the beginning. Not only does this song compliment all of his other famous and popular, crowd-pleasing hits from the past, but it seems like what those songs from over the years are leading up to. You just want to keep playing this over and over again. And I thought I couldn't get enough of the other great tunes. Such as, If I could Fly, Why, The Crush of Love, Satch Boogie, Lights of Heaven, Secret Prayer, The Traveler, Crystal Planet, The Unforgiven, Revelation, Can't go back. The list is endless with Joe. And now it is his birthday, July 15th. Happy Birthday.

I've NEVER heard of a single argument about how good a guitarist is without the majority of the viewpoint leaning on composition elements and I've never heard a solid argument for what makes a good song beyond subjectivity. Why? After you get deep enough into music, you start to realize not only that these sorts of things don't matter, but also that there is no quantifiable answer. Take it for what it is, take from it what you can, and buy the album if you like it. Most of all, to those who say he sucks because you can play it, I say this: I played with a professional country guitarist after I tried to imply that I played more complex music than he was (which I did). He proceeded to make an absolute fool of me by playing things FAR beyond what is required for his job. The pros put in the time and took the risk. They're there and you aren't. You show us and we'll take notice. Saying it makes you look like a fool.

I'm loving the songs he's putting out on this album. It's almost like he sat down, listened to his own masterpiece AKA the amazing Crystal Planet album, and said "Hey, I need to do some more of that." He has the tone nailed too. I always wondered what would have happened if he continued with that same stream of consciousness that he had during the Crystal Planet era. I feel that this music captures it perfectly.

I like to comment here: if old-time Satch fans are getting fed up with the way he composes and how his style of playing is 'ritual' (meaning, same tune, different expression), then I guess you have to make a decision - you either stop listening to Joe Satriani, or accept the way he plays. I've been listening to Joe since I was a kid and I never get fed up with him. So do yourselves a favor and just enjoy his music. Peace!

kigawman You're so right! People have this odd tendency to leave negative feedbacks to everything and everyone. I don't understand why, maybe they feel insecure and need to have a better opinion of themselves compared to the rest of the world. I have also listened to Joe Satriani since I was little. I think I must've been about seven, and he changed my life in a second. His music made me who I am today. He is the first person who has ever managed to stun me, he plays with such skill that no matter how cold you are, the vibes just cut their way straight to your soul. Many people fail to realize that, and it's their decision, but then they should just sit back and shut their fucken faces.

RedroomStudios The point is, I don't see why he should. He has his certain style and doesn't play the guitar to keep us entertained like "Hey look something new and fun", but to make us feel things. Maybe he has the same style in most of his songs, but that just makes it the Satriani style. :D

  • @RedroomStudios

Alexandrescu Maria why should he? because evolving and changing is the sign of a mature human being (not to mention musician). I used to be a huge supporter of Joe as you are now when others would tell me that his music was so simplistic and formulaic. eventually as I started to listen to a wider range of music and as Joe started to simply become a caricature of his former self I came to see that they were right. I still like Joe and find him an interesting character. there is no doubting his skill or the emotion he can communicate (mostly missing in more recent albums for me) I always am interested to see what he is doing but I always end up getting disappointed each time when I see he is still recycling the same old ideas and style with slightly rearranged melodies.

Joe has matured in his music and the sense of journey has increased with his age. It sounds like he is playing from the heart and sharing it! I think it's great, it is the type of song that I could listen to when I'm down or extremely happy, it's like this song takes you though a journey through time almost. It sounds to me like he really let go of something in that song and he is moving forward from the source? Just some deep thoughts :3

The first time I heard Flying in a blue dream when I was 16 I knew that was it. Nobody was going to get me like Joe. I've been lucky enough to have seen him live several times and will Keep going as long as he does. Some of his songs bring me to tears. If there is heaven on earth , it is here , it is here , it is here . This birth of mine is fulfilled by your music Satcha . Each time your songs grace the mind with different feelings which keep on adding new meanings to life . We Hail your early works and desperately await your new works with excitement while surfing through them to seek those wonders of music which connect with our soul . Ole .
