I caught that as well... I know Joe slips up sometimes, but the way I interpreted the "Before Keaton" comment was that Adam West didn't give them much to work with in terms of a darker version of the character. I don't think there was very much dichotomy between Batman & Bruce Wayne back in the day - he seemed to be the same guy in different clothes and his forte was "solving crimes". Whereas in the latter years Bruce remained the sexy & suave billionaire playboy by day and became a coarse-voiced, tech-augmented vengeance dealer by night - and Keaton started the trend.
