I went "low-fat plant-based" about two years ago (after 30 years of an animal-based diet) and my resting heart rate went from 78 down to 59 with no other dietary changes. I will NEVER go back to meat and dairy.

People have had similar results with vegetable based diets with meat. Pescetarian diet will acheive the same thing. Most western people have damaged their metabolism with lots of processed food containing high concentrations of fat, sugar and salt. There is no special secret lots of vegetables and light amounts of meat can be very very good for you as can lots of vegetables on their own.

Bran S there’s a lot of studies out there showing an acceleration of metabolism in a vegan diet. Milk has casomorphine which is why cheese makes you tired, it slows digestion. Meat is very complex, it slows down digestion. Most whole food plant based vegans will tell you the first benefit they feel from day one is never getting that mid afternoon sleepy feeling again. That’s your meatdoing that.

Kevin, so happy to hear about a guy being vegan and telling it how it is. It isn't all that much fun and it sucks to be the only vegan you know, that is some lonely living in a small community. March 2016 I went vegan and began to thrive, got to my ideal weight, could ride my bike for miles. by early 2017 I was "secretly" eating chicken wings, ham sandwiches, steaks and burgers. Thanksgiving 2018 I had a ruptured small intestine that they had to do surgery for. They found cancer, I had a heart attack on the operating table. A couple days later they took me to the cath lab where they put stents in and I had a massive stemi heart attack and after 40 minutes of CPR I got a pulse and started to live again. The day before Thanksgiving 2018 was the last time I knowingly ate any animal product. It is a little more than 7 months since I got out of the hospital. Again I am thriving, working hard to install a large garden that I hope to grow into a backyard farm to market operation. I cannot say enough good things about being vegan. I can also say eating is not the funnest thing I do anymore, eating is more of a chore that I try to make as fun as possible. One thing I find that really helps is to improve your gut biome with probiotic foods, any fermented food will have probiotic properties so sauerkraut, pickles, tempeh work. What I like to do for probiotic is to use miso on toast instead of margarine or mayonnaise. I make tomato sandwiches with and I do the same with avocado. I also like to put some sriracha sauce on these sandwiches.

Wow, what a story!!! So lucky you survived all that. Thank you for sharing - that is the best argument for staying plant-based I’ve heard in a long while. The thing about eating not being as fun as it once was…. are you experimenting with a variety of recipes? It definitely does not have to be boring. There are tons of “whole food plant based” recipes with yummy sauces, etc that can often fool even regular meat eaters. Look into the high starch, low fat recipes from Dr. John McDougall. I’m starting his program right now.

My dad had a similar kind of story, similar to Penn at least. He was having angina(chest pain) going on walks and stuff. Went to the doctor. Turns out his arteries are blocked. Doc wants to do a *quadruple* bypass, literally the next day. Dad thinks it over, waits on it. Hears about Dr. Esselstyn and decides to go vegan. 3 months later he goes back to the same doctor. Doctor is like, I'm not sure what happened, but you're numbers are good. Your arteries are still blocked, but I wouldn't recommend surgery. That was like 9 years ago. His diet is painfully boring, but his health has improved a lot. (He claims his irritable bowel syndrome which he had for decades went away).

It's a challenge avoiding added oils even when your trying to be super strict about it, but at the very least I would cut it out as much as possible if heart disease is a concern (which it should be for everyone). Veganism is finished. When people cut out the refined carbs...sugars...dairy... processed foods...they will be healthier no matter what the diet is. Talking to former vegans who are now carnivore...it's eye opening. The carnivore diet may literally be the best and most healing diet in the world for human beings.

Exactly what part about not supporting the mass slaughter of animals for food when you don’t need to eat them to be healthy, makes it a cult. If you have any actual criticisms I’m all ears and ready to put you in your place, but calling people who eat plants a religious cult is just laughable. Kevin lost 19 pounds in 2 freaking weeks and his blood tests were not only perfect, he was reduced to half his cholesterol medication. I've been vegan for 6 years and during that time many people close to me ran into severe health problems, especially my older relatives. Each time I'd recommend them to take out the meat, dairy, eggs, cheese, etc, and eat instead these much healthier whole foods. They don't try it until they're nearly about to die (three of them _did_ die from something they could have prevented). For the ones that took my recommendations, I didn't think such a change would happen so quickly but I'd hear about how their doctors were in shock that their health improved so much they had to be taken off of the medications as they became unnecessary. They're alive and more energetic today than ever.

At 55 I was overweight with high blood pressure and years of high cholesterol....vegan diet dropped my weight and cholesterol drastically. My energy level went through the roof...everything in my bloodwork improved, my whole life is better. Then toss on top that nobody kills animals on my behalf...grains that would normally be fed to animals could be fed to starving humans... It is just a much better way, for my life.....I will never go back to eating animals or animal products.

Actually, this whole thing backfired in Rogan's face. He was hoping to get a good story to debunk the starch diet (of potatoes and yams). This was a crushing shocker for him and his meat eater audience as it brought them to hard reality. No more, "dietary cholesterol is gOoD for u and makes ur brain grow bIgGeR" nonsense. Joe really started to feel the presence of the Grim Reaper sitting by him 😂.

Him and his wife had a huge dinner every night but ate pretty much nothing else the rest of the day when they were working and even after they retired. Have started being less strict in the last months and now I would say I am about 90% vegan and eat eggs once a week and will have cheese the odd time maybe once a month as a treat.

Great video Joe. I appreciate you not attacking veganism or really just plant based diet this time around. If you are exercising the way you are surely going plant based would help your body at deep level. Restaurants maybe harder to come by but if you live in big cities like los Angeles, San Diego, San Fran, etc there are so many restaurants and many different tastes. Anything you like now you can get vegan and exploring that is part of the fun. Even cooking is much more interesting esp when you cool with others and try out new things. Going plant based is an adventure for sure.

+And I "Plant-based" is simply the diet itself. A diet based on plants. "Vegan" is a lifestyle. A person on a plant based diet may not have any scruples about wearing leather shoes whereas a vegan would since vegans have an objection to all animal products, not just animal foods. Also, a plant-based diet is usually one devoid of most or all processed foods, hence why it is also called a "whole foods" diet. A vegan diet can include Oreos and potato chips and all other junk that has no animal-based ingredients.
