They started ratting because the sentences they were facing had changed. The old timers were facing 4, 5 years for gambling, extortion. The drug era had guys facing 20 plus years. Between the new RICO act and the fact that the new generation wasn't used to doing hard time, they started flipping. Book deals and Hollywood scripts helped a lot as well.

Correct. Gotti was a fool. And persico supporting it is surprising as even fbi agents said he was actually brilliant. The judge literally said he was a big waste of intelligence by being in the mob. Gotti was too flashy, cocky, and straight up reckless.
