Kinds of Kindness stars Joe Alwyn and Mamoudou Athie spoke with MovieWeb's Richard Fink about the new Yorgos Lanthimos film with Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, and others. Kinds of Kindness hit theaters June 21, 2024, after its success at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film, which was directed by Lanthimos and written by Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou, features a stellar ensemble cast including: two-time Academy Award-winner Emma Stone (Lanthimos’ Poor Things, The Favourite, La La Land), Willem Dafoe (Poor Things, The Lighthouse), Jesse Plemons (The Power of the Dog, Killers of the Flower Moon), Margaret Qualley (Poor Things, “Maid”), Hong Chau (The Whale, The Menu), Joe Alwyn (The Favourite, “Conversations with Friends”), Mamoudou Athie (Elemental, “The Get Down”), and Hunter Schafer (“Euphoria,” Cuckoo).
An anthological fable of free will, Kinds of Kindness follows three distinct stories each featuring different characters portrayed by the same actors: a man without choice as he attempts to take control of his life; a policeman whose “wife” returns home after being missing-at-sea, but seems to be a completely different person; and a woman whose sights are set on finding someone with a specific special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.
The film comes on the heels of Lanthimos’ massive success with Poor Things, which won four Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Emma Stone’s lead performance as Bella Baxter. Kinds of Kindness marks the fourth collaboration between Lanthimos and Filippou following Dogtooth, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and The Lobster, the latter of which earned them both an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Kinds of Kindness also sees Lanthimos collaborating again with Academy Award-nominated composer Jerskin Fendrix (Poor Things), Academy Award-nominated DP Robbie Ryan (Poor Things, The Favourite), and Academy Award-nominated editor Yorgos Mavropsaridis (Poor Things, The Favourite).

There are more clips that will gradually trickle out. By his third one from yesterday that I saw today, he was hilariously funny with a dry and quick wit. I’ve seen him like that in interviews for previous films where he has been paired with other actors, and you can tell that the process had reached the point that creative energy came out in the form of humor. See the three guys for Mary Queen of Scots and also his pairing with Andrew Scott for Catherine Called Birdy. Joe can slip skillfully in and out of seriousness to answer the interviewers questions. You should also watch the interviews of Joe with YORGOS,Jesse, and Willem for Sag-Aftra Q&A: Joe talks about how important it is to appear in a scene and not interrupt the world that has been created. I always feel that Joe supports anyone he is with in a way that highlights them rather than stealing the spotlight for himself.

Why straddle poor Mamoudou with this flop. Taylor fans won't forget what he did. The phonies might though.

You guys are so dumb, with every co-star you pull that off. 😂 And you get it wrong every single time: "Oh, Emma Stone and Margaret Qualley must hate doing promo tour with him" Emma: "Joe is one of the sweetest people you'll ever meet!". Margaret: "I love all the actors in this movie!" "Why straddle poor Mamoudou with this flop?" Mamoudou: "Joe is just a great guy!" Read the room, every co-star of him only has good things to say about him. It would be easy for them to cut him off, now that he is no longer the boyfriend of Taylor Swift. If they chose to stick with him, even though it might get them in trouble with rabid fans, they must think he is worth it.
