I gave up after #4 because it got silly. #3 was my first doctor and also introduced Sarah Jane (Elisabeth Sladen RIP) but Tom Baker was really my Doctor. I heard that Chris Eccleston was going to be the next Doctor in the reimagined show and I was immediately hooked again. In my opinion, Peter Capaldi was a bad choice for the Doctor. He was too well known for other TV roles and a long history of acting. He never seemed credible. Having seen Jodie in other shows, esp Broadchurch, I am interested again.

You can either jump in this year, which they say is being written in a manner to be welcoming to first-time viewers, or you can start with "Rose" in 2005, which involves a lot of watching, but additionally involves some of the greatest dramatic and comedic moments in television history. I'd recommend starting off with the upcoming premiere, and dipping back into the previous stuff at your leisure. Don't skip that first season, though, despite advice to the contrary. There's information there vital to fully getting the rest of the story that unfolds over subsequent seasons (and Doctors).

Hannah!!! Yeah, if you’re just starting I would start with Jodi’s first episode when it comes out. There’s really no good place to start with Doctor Who. You’ll be confused af anywhere but I would personally start at the beginning of a series (season) because first episodes tend to ease you in. But you can go with some of the episodes mentioned above. The only thing I’d dislike from starting in the middle of the series episodes is potential spoilers for that season. Even though every episode has its own storyline, there is still an overarching main story that follows an entire series.

Scorpious, from Farscape, obviously being first. > Lizzy Pelosof I hope you are right. Jodie deserves a fair crack at it. Capaldi didnt get what he deserved and despite being a great actor, you can only work with what you are given. Now the Matt Smith era was good. Yes it took me a while to adjust to a new Doctor as it always does, but he was given some good material. He had moments of shallow idiocy and really dark glowering. He looked like an alien at points. It was fantastic. Capaldi could have done that. I havent seen Broadchurch yet but I hear she was great in it. So I hope that bodes well for her adventures.

I didn't particularly think she got a good opportunity in Broadchurch to really show how good she can be. Thought the writing for Beth Latimer was kind of static, and that Andrew Buchan had a much better-written character as her husband, Mark. That said, I'm excited to see what she can do as the Doctor. She's talented and has always seemed extremely likable.

Absolutely. My commentary is absolutely no criticism of her. She did well with what she was given. I just don't think she was given that much other than what was pretty predictable for a person in her position as the series progressed. Mark Latimer's character development as written was more dynamic and unpredictable, and as such Buchan got the better opportunity to stand out in the show than did Whitakker. I really liked her in that show, and it's one of my few complaints about it that she wasn't given a less-predictable line of development in which to showcase her talents.

I think it's very cool to see Stephen Colbert using a picture of Tom Baker as he describes it as "my Doctor from my childhood." Same here. I grew up with Tom Baker since I was kid at the age of eleven or twelve, and he's really the reason why I stuck with the show for a long time. I started with "The Pyramids of Mars" on a Sunday afternoon on PBS and it became a cornerstone of TV viewing for many more Sundays until the late 80s. Baker remains my favorite incarnation as he captures that otherworldly quality.
