Erica, I am glad that you enjoyed the video! You are doing the best thing to determine whether or not you would like to become a PT! It can be nerve racking, but you shouldn't be nervous! I remember whenever I first began shadowing I felt some nerves, but it is such a great experience that after awhile I was always excited. Best of luck on your journey!

So I got my CNA while i was still in high school and we did our clinical hours in nursing homes. And I actually spent one on one time with the activities coordinator and she was so amazing!! And spoke with some physical therapists as well. Now that I'm 21 and still wanting to do physical therapy, however i've moved out of state. I was wondering if i could shadow even though I'm not in school for physical therapy.

Hello, yes you can still shadow even if you aren't currently attending physical therapy school. Typically observation/shadowing hours is a requirement for acceptance into PT school. Are you looking to apply to physical therapy school soon?

Hi Dylan! Thanks for the question! I do love the profession, and like anything there are pros and cons. I love working with patients, seeing them progress, and getting to help people in tangible ways. I don't like all the bureaucracy and regulation of the insurance market and the additional burden that it puts on therapist. Documentation can be time consuming, but it is necessary. Work is work, and while yes you should enjoy it, there will always be challenges. I'll be posting some more videos about this topic in the future. Thanks for the question, sorry for the delayed response!

Hello! I'm going to be a freshman in highschool this year and I have a PT clinic near me. Do you think should I start shadowing as a freshman who doesn't know anything or wait a few years?

Hello! Good for you for thinking of getting started so early with your shadowing experiences. The sooner you can start shadowing the better! This will help you make a more informed decision about if you truly want to become a physical therapist or not. I did shadowing in high school and it helped me to decide that this was what I wanted to do as a career and empowered me to plan out my future more effectively. Good luck with your shadowing and let me know if you need anything else!

What do you think is a good amount of observation hours? (I know schools have a minimum)

Hi Juana! Great question. Most schools will state that you need a "minimum" of 100 observation hours. Meeting the "minimum" does not make you a competitive applicant. I have another video how many observation hours you should have to be competitive. Check it out here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/g6Rtz5KYcau7ZrQ.html My formula that I give is the 3,5,4,6. 300-500 hours in 4-6 different settings. You can always shoot for more, but this is what I believe the true "minimum" is to be competitive. Please go watch my shadowing/observation hours video for much more detail! Please let me know if you have any further questions!

@@PTAPPCO wow are you sure minimum of 100 hours? Most of the school here in Florida that I want to apply have a minimum of 20-60 hours. There is another school I’m interested in Texas that does not require any.

@@gedenirfiorese3523 Good question. Let me put it to you this way...applicants who only achieves "the minimum" are less competitive than those who receive more hours. This will seem obvious, but as a coach I cannot in good conscious recommend that applicants only strive for "the minimum" because many of those only achieve them minimum have more difficulty gaining acceptance offers to multiple programs. Now Covid has certainly changed things, but if two applicants are otherwise identical and one has 60 observation hours and another one has 100 observation hours who am I going to take? I also have had multiple program liaisons share with me that they have to post a minimum, but their qualified applicants have 3-5x times the minimum.
