The incomparable Joan Sutherland. Love, love, love!

She was wonderous and lets not forget the trills of which I'm a total addict , I mean I'm obsessed by a trill, but lets for a moment put the trills and all the ornamentation aside , her timbre was like gold. Most of you will understand I know, but we only have to hear 1 or 2 bars and we know who it is singing. It is totally unique in sound because it's so rich and unique.

Always my number one. What a wonderful voice and those top notes so beautiful and apparently effortless .Those fast runs so smooth no matter how high.

I was rightly taken to task once when I said someone was "the best" at something. So I'll have to settle for "my favorite" and Joan Sutherland was my favorite soprano. While I greatly respect Callas and all the other sopranos, Sutherland was, IMHO, my favorite. I readily admit I don't know enough for my opinion to mean anything, but there it is... :)

@@machovoce6826 She certainly was. There's no question that even her unbiased detractors admit in the vocal beauty contest she was the winner despite what they see as her other flaws. Nobody is perfect, but for sheer voice and control there was nobody remotely even close in her prime.

Incredible, effortless, incomparable. She also sang two E naturals in al tuo seno fortunato from Haydn’s Orfeo ed Euridice.

"And take this with you!" At just before 9:00. I've never laughed so hard, god I love Dame Sutherland.

What's hard to believe is that in 1955 singing like that she was somewhat known in London but not yet a star. Ridiculous. The world should have had another 5 years of her.

She was so very one of a kind that was possible.

@Iandaoperaman I repitched the '62 "O zittre nicht" because it sounded too high in B-flat and a biography of Sutherland mentioned how she transposed *both* Queen of the Night arias, not just "Der Hölle Rache." Anywho, glad you enjoyed the video! It's been quite a job. :)

The top F was definitely out of her register (always a bit too low) but it really doesn't matter. Her E and E flat were so thrilling ! They had a unique quality of resonance and radiance. Unforgettable Stupenda !

su mejor obra ............fue tan solo solo su voz suprema.....................las obras de los autores que la compusieron...tan solo tenían un...una idea de lo que podría ser........y la idea de Sutherland.....tan solo fue exponer...su voz.....y su voz supero todas las expectativas.....hasta hoy dia......puesto que jamas habrá una mujer mas dedicada a la música que ella..................y esa pasión personal de saber que tiene y puede esa voz.....eso no se puede volver a repetir................y tan solo es de pura lógica...........era una LEONA......UNA ELEFANTE DEL CANTO........

Sutherland said in an interview that she sang the most brilliant and clear high E natural of her carreer recording the hamlet mad scene, but an air plane flew overhead and when they repeated it the 2nd one wasn't as good! Lol!

george prentice Yes Sutherland did perform Fille du Regiment in Sydney in 1985 and it was video recorded but from 1982 she frequently transposed her music down so high D was her top note (though she did sing a high Eb in Rigoletto in Sydney in 1985) but then by the late 80s her top sung note was high Db ... but in the 19th century all great divas transposed or simply ducked high notes they no longer had.

@@KathrynARyder All her Lucias (except the very last in December of 1988) ended on the Eb. Including the 1986 Lucia in Sydney. And she was able to hit high E or F in her late 40's or early 50's...but apparently couldn't sustain them. There is a performance of Esclarmonde, excerpts here on KZread, where she briefly hits the F as a distressed cry...although the exact date is unclear...mid-1970's: kzread.info/dash/bejne/rH6X1s6YacjTZdI.html The high F occurs around 11:13 or so.
