@@mercenary1881 The fact that the Funk Brothers are her backup band is a hint. Agreed that talent knows talent. The Funk Brothers, for those who don't know, were the Motown equivalent to the Wrecking Crew, and played on all the big Motown hits of the time.

My brother in law, Allan Slutsky, did the arrangement of the song, produced the movie itself, and is the man conducting the band behind Joan. Greatest version of any Motown song I have ever heard. Just saw Joan the other night in Buffalo. She still has it. but she'll never top this performance.

Somehow Joan simultaneously channelled Jimmy Ruffin and Janis Joplin for an awesome interpretation of this classic tear jerker. When I first heard this as kid in the 1960’s I thought it was about losing your girlfriend. As a professional musician, I could kiss the bass player and the vibraphone player (not to mention all the others, including background vocalists). They give so much to the special sound. And the one person not on stage, who should be, is the arranger. Holy crap, what a killer arrangement. The "dynamics" - loud and soft parts - add a lot of drama. If you're not a musician, you may miss this, but there's an incredible modulation :47 - :49 that would make Bach smile. I'm in awe of everything about this performance - it's one for the ages!
