California for me is the ultimate union of contrasts. The endless dry deserts meet endless beaches. So many farmlands are overlooked by vast mountain ranges. To drive it’s length from South to North takes at least 3 days. What redeems us is we are somehow an incredible mix of cultures, ethnicities, and lifestyles. You could surf, snow ski, scuba dive or hike forests or deserts all in the same week and all those experiences are no more than a few hours drive from any one place in the state. California is the center of a universe of possibilities, yet it still is often seen as a simple sun kissed playground, not as a cultural or intellectual equal to rival places such as New York. Yet, the landscape has fueled a consciousness in writers such as Joan, or John Steinbeck, and countless others, that in this vast landscape we our both futurists in our diversity and all too aware of how tenuously we survive this landscape as it shakes, dries, crowds and clutters, and occasionally burns. We see all these possibilities as magical and yet we are here by forcing ourselves upon this hot, dry, otherwise forbidding state.

Look. My family roots in Northen California are as deep as Joan Didion’s. But my feelings and reactions are very different and much more easily expressed. California was a terrestrial paradise. The first American settlers wandered into paradise on earth…beautiful, astonishingly fecund. In less than 200 years of American “development” following American principles and values it has turned much of it into a hellish place, a process that is still on going and building. Contrast it with Italy, another paradise, similar in its gifts , and see the difference.
