Joan Bennett on Guiding Light December 22, 1982

Ойын-сауық

From a 1982 Guiding Light episode, Nola Reardon's best friend, Gracie, is offered a job by movie star Joan Bennett, who plays herself in the episode. Nola is invited to meet Miss Bennett and they discuss her film and TV career. The episode aired on December 22, 1982. (On a personal note, it's funny that they imply that Miss Bennett lives in California when she actually lived in Scarsdale, New York at the time of this episode.)

The only reason I know Joan Bennett is bc she was in Suspiria. She was terrific in it. One of the best supporting turns by an actress I've ever seen in a horror movie.

GRACIE: "Nola, I'd like you to meet... NOLA: "No need to tell me. Everyone knows Grayson Hall. Thank goodness Miss Bennett didn't refer to either of the ladies as "Maggie" or "Vickie". Louis Edmonds and Joan Bennett were good friends off the set. Louis once joked he loved rehearsing with Joan Bennett. He said they would rehearse lines together weekends, and enjoy cocktails during breaks. He said, "she had the best stocked home bar you ever saw." If only they had said at the end, Miss Bennett's gown by Bonwit Teller, I'd feel I was back watching What's My Line?

Guy, thank you so much for posting this! I had seen the clips only once before, in the early part of 1983, when an acquaintance showed it to me. Can't believe it's been 31 years. When Bennett speaks of appreciating talent, it took me right back to that scene in Scarlet Street where she's standing on the balcony talking about painting.

WOW! Thank you for posting this! I saw an appearance on Guiding Light in Joan Bennett's filmography and I was really glad to find it, but had been wondering what character she'd be in Springfield's tapestry, and am totally floored that she appeared as herself! How delightful!

Ken, I believe she was only in the single episode. A friend sent me this many years ago. I can't remember who the friend was to ask your question. But it appears to me that it was just one episode. And I'm sure that all of Joan's scenes were included. Thanks for your kind comments.

Joan Bennett owed her career to Hedy Lamarr. Joan, like her older sister Constance, were natural Blondes. In 1938, her husband at the time, Walter Wanger, cast a Hollywood unknown , Hedy lamarr in her first American movie, "Algiers". She was a sensation and became a hugh star at the time, mainly cause of her beauty, we later found out years later, also an inventor. joan was so taken with Hedy's brunette hair, she died her blonde tress's and never went Blonde again. Her career prior to that, was on the downward skids, so it was revived again with her new look. The comics at that time always had a field day, by saying...Why does Hedy, make Joan wear all of her old hair."

Thanks so much for this fun post! I was a GL fan from the mid-1970's into the early 1980's, but started to lose interest when Cindy Pickett left the show and the "Nola and Quint" storyline came in (which struck me as being beyond silly - even for a soap opera!) Anyway, I did miss this episode and enjoyed seeing it so many years after the fact. Now (!) if only those Joan Crawford apperances (from 1968, I believe) would show up - lol! Thanks again!

+John Jolson I think Crawford subbed for her daughter Christine on SECRET STORM. That had to be a riot for fans -- watching this obviously much older lady playing a young lady the age of whatever Christine was at the time -- and having scenes with Christine's on air fiancé who would have been very young too.

John Jolson I wasn’t even born during the Quint & Nola storyline heyday, but I agree it is rather silly and I know Lisa Brown is a fine actress, but she acted like a over grown kid, and Brown and Tylo’s scenes seem like watching an Elizabethan play.

What’s ridiculous about it? Soap actors are the hardest working in the industry and most movie actors couldn’t do what they do.

The stories are ridiculous, but that doesn’t mean the productions are worthless. Soaps are all about character development, sensational stories and acting. The stories are absurd, but so is Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’, ‘As You Like It’ and others. In fact, those Shakespeare plays employ a lot of story devices that today are commonplace in sitcoms and soaps. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not comparing Agnes Nixon to Shakespeare except in the sense that each was a giant in their field, and people of their time waited anxiously to see what they would write next. They were both good storytellers.
