There was a moment in 1987, when a feisty and driven Joan Baez thought, "enough is enough." She rolled up her sleeves and accepted an offer from artist manager and label executive Danny Goldberg to join his latest start-up, Gold Castle, and start making records again. That decision led to three albums whose reappearance in 2016 should be cause for no small amount of rejoicing in Joan Baez circles, especially by those who might've been looking the other way (musically, most likely), or just missed them entirely the first time around. So quickly did they seem to come and go.
The 33 collective tracks contained on Recently, Diamonds and Rust in the Bullring, and Speaking of Dreams hold their own as some of the greatest song selection sequences of Joan's entire discography. All three Gold Castle titles were produced by Alan Abrahams at Capitol Records Studios in Hollywood.
In a career spanning over 55 years and over 30 albums, Joan Baez is still touring and still mesmerising audiences all over the world. Her social activism has provoked and inspired, encouraging many other performers who followed to stand up for their beliefs.

Brothers In Arms - LYRICS
These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day you'll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And no longer burn
To be brothers in arms
Through these fields of destruction
Baptisms of fire
Ive watched all your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms
There's so many different worlds
So many different's suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones
Now the suns gone to hell
And the moons riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But its written in the starlight
And every line on your palm
Were fools to make war
On our brothers in arms

Many thanks for this and the accompanying information and lyric. I came to Joan Baez in the early 1960s. In my eyes the stature of Joan Baez increases through the years. Her humanity and dignity continue to shine through.

Agree. This is a soldiers song to the core. No righteous person wants to kill another human, no matter how much we have been to taught to hate. I call a Brothers in Arms any soldier that became a soldier with honorable intention. We have been all lied to badly at times and too often, our 'enemy' was doing nothing more than what we would have done in our own country, protecting our family and country. Dune , U.S. Army 67-70.

I was a 22 year old country guy, when I bought "Come from the shadows Album". I was smitten by this intensely pure voice and silken lyrics. Joan, I heard had never had voice lessons. If she is mediocre, then nearly all other singers before and since are basically hopeless! I had a tear in my eye and a lump in my throat just now, listening to my Favourite track and Joans explanation of the origins of this incredible real life poem sung so poignantly. Masterclass.
Her voice is just as clear and pure as ever. I love it.

She does t every time. She sings the first note & I just react. I saw her live at The Albert Hall in the 60s & it was like pouring ice cubes down my spine. Same thing now. What a Voice,
Had the privilege of seeing Joan on one of her rare visits to the UK - The Apollo Ardwick, suburb of Manchester. Just Joan, a guitar, and an audience in the palm of her hand. And that glorious voice. She finished her first half with an a'capella version of Swing Low Sweet Chariot - she'd actually finished the song and left the stage before a stunned audience could react ... thunderous applause followed. Joan has been my inspiration since my teenage years - she was there in my darkest hours, and my sunlit days ... i owe you Joan xxx

Bellissimo, è tanto attuale purtroppo, che cosa ci aspetta ancora?
Beautiful version of a wonderful Knopfler song, from a lady who has sung beautifully about peace all her life.
Singing with a beautiful and clear voice, Joan Baez has made an excellent cover of an excellent song. She interprets the demanding lyric from Mark Knopfler in a quiet and relaxing kind, that everybody starts dreaming of a peaceful world.

A yardstick for cover versions is to add value, not copy to the song. What is the use of sounding just like the origional singer.
Joan has added such a rich dimension to this brilliant song. MK wrote a tribute to soldiers, brothers-in-arms. Her version is so haunting that she enriches MK version.

What a voice!!. Pure harmony and soul that fill the performance really touch and move!..
La voce più armoniosa , più profonda che tocca le corde più intime dei sentimenti umani , semplicemente straordinaria e unica.

It takes someone with the talent and conviction of Joan Baez, to work this song so well and this is an absolute masterpiece by Dire Straits but it's also brilliant by Joan. You GO GIRL!!!!!
It's hard to believe that at 46 yrs old she still had such an amazing voice.
She adds so much to this song in this version and her voice has stood the rest of time

happy you like it, but I disagree. I mean, of course her voice is absolutely wonderful and from heaven but this song is huge and powerful enough, it's self- sufficient!! isn't it????

Sebas, let's hear you sing this. I believe a beautiful voice brings more life to all great songs. Words alone, can't express feelings like Joan Baez gives to this song.
Beautiful Joan Baez, thank you. We all need to sing now more than ever. Peace to you, and all.

Tom, she will never be equalled. Her retirement is such a loss to the world. But we all wish her the peace she so deserves. Thank you Joan Baez.
Truly beautiful! What bless to the entire human race.
Thank you again, You Tube Gods, that brought me to this beautiful rendition of one of my favorite songs. Damn, that voice takes me back to the 1960's all over again. Damn near brought me to tears.

Thank you Stefan,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, as the producer of these tracks I did try to get MK to do the guitar solo but he said no because two words in the 3rd verse were changed in Joan's interpretation...............never had any problem with Dylan..........his choice - Joan's integrity and championing all the causes she has and her latest Joe Henry produced album is further proof that she respects all..........and deserves the same. Thanks for the comment

Although I have long been a fan, I had never heard this song sung by Joan until this evening. Wow! It is one of her best.
These mist covered mountains Are a home now for me But my home is the lowlands And always will be Some day you'll return to Your valleys and your farms And you'll no longer burn To be brothers in arms Through these fields of destruction Baptisms of fire Ive watched all your suffering As the battles raged higher And though they did hurt me so bad In the fear and alarm You did not desert me My brothers in arms There's so many different worlds So many different's suns And we have just one world But we live in different ones Now the suns gone to hell And the moons riding high Let me bid you farewell Every man has to die But its written in the starlight And every line on your palm Were fools to make war On our brothers in arms
