How does one live a devoted life without becoming obsessed? Questions around love, attachment and death are at the heart of Joan Wasser's darkest and most pensive record to date, "Damned Devotion". As a session musician she's collaborated with everyone from Lou Reed to Damon Albarn - before taking centre stage as the frontwoman of Joan As Police Woman. Joan Wasser joins us on Encore.

I went to see Krystle Warren play and she was touring with Joan as a Police Woman. I watched Krystle play, she was amazing. Then Krystle came down into the crowd as Joan was beginning her set, so I went over and said hi, told her I'd loved her set and offered to get her a beer. She accepted and me and my friend tried to contain ourselves as we watched Joan, Jeff Buckley's last GF, with Krystle Warren, who was a massive Buckley fan, who was even wearing a Buckley silhouette t-shirt on stage that night. Halfway through the show, Krystle brought two beers over to me and my friend, refused to accept my polite protestations and my friend and I got that touch more tipsy thanks to Krystle Warren's sheer class. After the show, there was a chance to meet Joan and we took it, me trying to figure out the best way to ask about Jeff without getting totally shut down. I didnt have to worry about strategizing as it happened, when we met her my friend blurted out, 'He loves Jeff Buckley!', to which Joan responded, 'So did I'. The way she said it pulled the air from the room. I tried to keep the conversation encircling her performance, even though her music wasn't really my kind of thing and I left there, I think, having been forgiven the discretion of bringing him up (but Joan is not the easiest person to read when you meet her in person). That night, my friend and I also ended up singing for Krystle Warren. She liked both our voices, which was infinitely pleasing and I think she learned a lesson about providing beer to even the politest, sweetest English people - Booze makes us confident, confident enough to request our vocal idols listen to us sing and provide autographs. Lol. What a night.

How she got over losing jeff I can not imagine. She's a very strong resilient woman. But jeff wouldn't have been interested in anything less I'm sure .

it seems incredibly rude to interview an artist and then play music by other artists while leaving the guest sitting there !! surely you could conclude the interview and allow them to leave and then play the other music. Pretty poor behaviour and program planning.

You can see she carries an amount of hurt and restraint intensity, her music is average, but if she was seeing Jeff Buckley at the time when he died that's where the real hurt is. His talent and intensity was so huge that anyone that was a part of his life is less after he passed, a lot less. So, many people's success was riding on the back of Jeff Buckley directly or indirectly.

I've only heard of Joan Wasser through Jeff Buckley. I remember reading an interview where she thanked the reporter at the end for not bringing him up, which made me sympathize with her for always being asked about him (but of course the reporter included that part in the publication, which I thought was awful of them). But come on now - it's been over 20 years and she could easily politely decline to answer the question, but she doesn't... so it feels like she is exploiting their relationship to try to stay relevant.

I think she's merely being polite. Her facial expression tells me that she's not comfortable talking about the subject. It goes without saying that she wants to be associated with her music, not someone she dated many years ago. Yoko Ono once said that she only lived with John Lennon a short period of her life. She had a long life before and after, but in interviews she's always asked about John Lennon.
