Used on the "Toki" limited express service between Tokyo and Niigata up until 1982, when it became a bullet train service on the then recently opened Joetsu Shinkansen. This particular trainset was displayed outside the Niigata Rolling Stock Center until 2007, when it was moved to the Railway Museum in Omiya.
