JKOO Tsunami(津波) katana-T10 Steel Review & Destructive Test

This is a review and destructive test of a JKOO Tsunami Katana. If you are interested in this sword it can be found here.
This sword was sent to me for free for the purposes of testing and review. The sword was destroyed in the process of testing. Testing is dangerous in this way is dangerous and is discouraged. Please be careful if you decide to attempt anything I do in the video and do so at your own risk.
** The manufacturer told me that the saya usually has horn parts and that this saya is not what would normally be sent. I only have this one to work with so it does not change my impressions. A horn kurikata and koiguchi might have made things a little nicer though.

@matthew jensen this is the most detailed katana review i have ever seen. Going over the measurements in blade width and taper alone is more than 99% of reviewers do and i find that info one of if bot the most important info when it comes to sword specs. Subscribed! Question: i know all manufacturers are not the same so is there anyway you could please review the (relatively) new ryujin t10 dh custom katana? SBG is promoting them quite a lot and they are very attractive to me due to pricing.

Awesome!! Thank you so much for the reply. One more question: in your experience and GENERALLY speaking, are the T10 Differentially Hardened katana coming out of Longquan China of “reliable” construction? “Reliable” being defined as, the swords wont snap in half and fly into you if you cut their intended targets (water bottles, tatami rolls, green bamboo and equivalent).

  • @Matthew_Jensen

    @Matthew_Jensen

In general yes. I have had very few swords with critical failures that would result or have resulted in snapping. In general T10 seems to be fine. I have the best luck with 1060 and then 1045 out of China. 1095 has been unforgiving.

A larger number of the 1095 blades have taken a set or chipped than their counter parts in 1060 or 1045. 1060 seems to be the more resilient of the three.

Wow, I bought a custom one in T-10 with a suguha hamon...massive 3.5cm motohaba and 3cm sakihaba and it definitely does not have a secondary bevel. Although I ordered it with hira niku, its razor sharp and cuts tatami more easily than any of my albion swords or my Ryujin custom T-10 katana which are all shaving sharp (vigil, steward, munich, dane) . I will be reviewing it soon. I am very curious as to why the sword they sent you seems so much different. My tsuka is also quite ergonomic and not nearly as thick as yours..although I did get the "battle wrap". The one complain I have with mine is that the scabbard is very low quality, poorly fitted, and just a piece of crap in general.

Their Jian came with a somewhat blunted tip and a deep crack in the wood of the handle. The tanto is OK, Fuchi Koshirae is not lined up well with the wooden part of the tsuka/handle, but no big deal. Their custom katana has a similar problem in one spot where the metal ring near tsuba cuts into the hand, but only under certain circumstances (depending on how the sword is held). The saya though came cracked, they promised to send me a replacement, it's over two months now, still no saya. I e-mailed them and asked for updates, they promised to get back to me the next day, but never did. I really wanted Jkoo to be awesome, and I am a returning customer, but considering it took them over 6 months (against promised 2 months) to ship me the sword (mono-steel T10 with DH), and wood they used clearly wasn't dried or treated well enough, as it cracked in 2/3 items from them, and not a very reliable CS -- I should say that there are better custom sword vendors at this price point out there. Sorry, Jkoo, but hope your reputation does go up.

Dark EdgeLord I have a t10 that cost me 385. This one here is 200. Some I’ve seen cost 800. Seems to me a good form swing would result in a clean cut from both a hanwei sword and this one. I’m guessing price point comes from build quality for one and the metal quality as well. T10 is t10 but all metal is subject to flaws and companies like this seem to sell the flawed swords for a cheaper price. Still would work in a zombie apocalypse! Just maybe not on bamboo

I just dont want my blade to chip form cutting small pieces of wood but i also really love how the hamon looks

@@dragossabin8265 well swords that are clay tempered aint as tough as a through hardened blade because with clay tempered swords the edge is harder than the spine and it makes it easier for a blade to take a set but with a through hardened blade the whole blade is hardened all the way through and theres less chance that the blade will take a set or bend . theres nothing wrong with a differentially hardened blade but you just gotta use common sense and use the blade for what its meant for . but if I use a DH blade then I would stick to lighter cutting but if you gonna be chopping on wood then you better go with a through hardened blade . but at the same time I wouldnt be cutting wood with any of my swords because it would eventually cause rattle with the hardware and a katana wasnt meant to be cutting wood

I have seen Many sites state that they or Manufactures actually measure to the tsuba or hilt e.g. they include the hibaki, which is incorrect way to measure, your way is the correct traditional way to measure the blade, however often the variance may also be because that particular manufacturer or site does not measure the traditional way. With Jokoo they insinuate they measure the traditional way so this may actually be a case of handmade variance. (For customers out there if your worried about length, lol, first check the manufactures data vs the retailer data to try to get the closest measurements and see if they state how they measure.)

sim_ra 88 You are right. At the time I left this comment I was much less informed than now. T10 is basically a Chinese version of 1095, with a bit of tungsten I believe, which explains why it can be great for a Katana. 1095 is tried and true. Nevertheless, the sword here probably had a less than optimal heat treat which is what really counts in the end. You could have the best steel in the world, but without a proper heat treat (the soul of the blade), it really wouldn’t do you any good. It’s just the way things happen with mass production swords. There will be average and then outliers in both very bad and very good. You will run into very tough and great 1050 swords and you will get not so great swords made of a steel with more carbon, fancy alloying etc.

After watching several of your videos over the past 6 months, I decided to buy a daisho set from JKOO/Sinosword. I was horribly disappointed when it showed up 2-3 weeks later than expected. Neither was sharp (neither will shave hairs on my arms, or cut paper). The hand guards are both warped and not fitted well. At least I could (after sharpening) use the wakizashi to make cuts, but the katana is unusable. It seems like the handle was put onto the tang twisted. So if I hold the handle properly, the edge will be twisted like 3-4 degrees... Which would guarantee a bad cut because edge alignment would be off. That would almost guarantee the blade taking a set and would not cut anything. I am currently working with JKOO to have a new katana sent to me, so I get to test their customer service. I'd rather NOT test that on my FIRST purchase. I'll update when this whole fiasco is done and hopefully I'll be able to give a glowing review when the replacement shows up.... I don't think I'll ever be buying another blade from them cause this whole process has been a nightmare for me. Edit: That is NOT a comprehensive list of everything I've found that is wrong/sloppy/rushed with both swords... Not even close. Just the big stuff.

@@adamekcar oh yeah, they did end up replacing the katana, but it had the same issue albeit slightly less severe. The blade ended up chipping on the tip when I cut a soft milkjug. I'll probably say something you already know, but I'll still say it :) For blade protection, I suggest Tuf Cloth. Don;t remember who's manufacturing it.. Marine grade is impressive.

I can respect just sending me a blade that a customer could have gotten. It is a better representation than a cherry picked piece. That said, I don't really know what or why they sent this one and it is the only piece I have to base my thoughts on..

I talked to Van Yang and he told me they just grabbed one of these to send to you. I have commissioned two from scratch and have two I have ordered and customized from their offerings on their site. The secondary bevel was odd as the most recent katana i received from them has a razor sharp edge. It was so sharp the katana jumped out the saya and cut me well before I could get the sword bag open lol. For the price the have some great blades and options to customize them and Id definitely buy more from them.

What is the budget? What is it for? Do you study a style swordsmanship? What are you cutting? Are aesthetics important? Lots of questions... Assuming you want hand made by a smith of note, battle ready as in ready for functional use on tatami or similar medium... I would either ping someone like Paul Martin for a genuine nihonto piece made by a smith in Japan. Or if you want to go outside of Japan, Pavel Bolf is a good one. Howard Clark, Rick Barrett, Walter Sorrells, Dan Keffler... All of those are good stuff. Most of those options are going to be $3-$8K starting.. If you want something more budget oriented then "mass production" style swords are where you would look. Again, same questions apply.

If it is for cutting, I would go with something modern made out a less traditional steel. I like the Amercian smiths but I am a little bias that way. If you want something traditional or that will work better for iaido. I would recommend looking for an antique or reaching out to Paul Martin on facebook to put you in contact with a Japanese smith. They will be able to make you something genuine. I don't know who he works with but if you don't have any budget you can probably find a really fine well known smiths blade on the second hand market from Aoi japan or something and get it mounted up and ready to use.

I'm very fond of your channel. Great reviews and I envy your collection and respect your view and knowledge on the subject immensely. However when you swing a katana it is not so much a swing as an angled hinged rotation of the blade as you bring it down which gives the blade extreme speed and torque with minimal effort. If you study japanese practitioners you will see what I mean. I mean no disrespect but if the katana or what have you is not wielded properly it's not an effective test.

Japanese swordsmanship has a wide variety of cuts and techniques depending on the school. I don't think any of them would argue I am an example of good. That said, the test is more of the blades durability and trustworthiness as a product rather than my skill. I can agree that if the test was to just how effective the sword is at cutting, then I am not the man to do it.

Nothing sketchy with them, got a katana from them kobuse lamination 1095 and soft core and it's very well done can't complain, made it custom in shirasaya but the blade is literally a work of art. So go 100%confidence, great communication with customer service and they will satisfy your requirements about the sword if you get a custom made one. I paid around 400 euros for it so price - quality it's worth it. On the same page custom made katana, it will take around a month and 1 week to be done. Cheers and go with full confidence.

Okay here's the issues with your video unnecessarily long. I went to this video because I wanted to see you literally abusing a yongli t10 sword. I bought one because machine steel is the second toughest steel that you can get tungsten. What I wanted to see was if this $200 sword I bought what it would take to destroy it. What I was hoping to watch you do was cut copper pipe aluminum cans a car chop wood basically have used the sword instead what I saw was you running your mouth for about at 45 minutes talking about what you did I don't want to hear about what you did I want to see you do it. I have this video here basically 47 minutes of you running your mouth and just for the record I can barely hear you I am hard of hearing I have my volume on this thing as high as it'll go and I can barely hear a word out of your mouth so it sounds like the teacher from peanuts talking for an hour instead of cutting anything in my opinion this is a very disappointing video I think you can do much better I like to see you do better in the future I'd like to say I'm being unfair but I don't think I am if you don't believe me be your own critique go back and watch your own video and see if you come up with the same conclusion if this is something you can enjoy watching for an hour and that's another thing why is it an hour long can you have made three videos that are 20 minutes long who has an hour to sit here and watch a guy run his mouth. Obviously I do but not really. And in all honesty I did Skip through it some so I may have missed something.

Hey, don't watch it if your bothered by his review. People including myself want to hear his opinion and critics on other factors other than just the destruction test. Here is an idea, go buy the sword and go do it yourself. People like you are the problem with todays society and have some gd respect you idiot or don't because you are ill mannered.
