Jinhao x850 vs x450 Unboxing and Review 2023
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
My first review of 2023 is of a pen that is an upgrade to the fountain pen that started my KZread channel three years ago; the Jinhao x450. The Jinhao x850 is a wonderful upgrade to that sturdy beginner's model; the x450. I unbox it, talk about the parts and features of the pen, provide some size comparisons and measurements, and then do a writing sample. After the writing sample, I talk about what I like and what I don't like about the pen. Please feel free to use the chapters provided below to skip to various parts of the review.

Thanks for the review, Doug. The x450 has long been one of my favorites. After buying my Pilot 823 last year I haven't used much else for serious writing, but I do still still return to the x450 sometimes for play. I put a FPR ultraflex in it and widened the channel on the feed so that it keeps up with that nib fine. This looks like a very nice upgrade to that one. I'll have to order it.

Interesting to reflect on what awakened the passion in our hobby. I have used fountain pens continuously since high school (Class of 1977); but it was the 2018 (?) gift of a Visconti Midnight Voyager from an elderly writer whose offspring were indifferent to pens, discovered for what it was when the pandemic got going, that ignited my passion. A fine review of a fine pen!

I love the changes they have made to the aesthetics, but my heart sank when I saw they switched over to a screw cap. I absolutely love snap caps and it was one of many reasons why I adore my x450s. I'll definitely be getting one x850 whenever my local reseller can import them (Indian customs sucks so I just never bother importing myself) to see how it holds up and if I can look past the screw cap. Looking forward to the 82 review too. Haven't pulled the trigger on that yet myself but I most likely will order it together with the x850.
I was very curious to see what this new X850 was about when I saw it on Aliexpress a couple of weeks ago. Your review answered all my questions. Thank you. Your reviews are always great, Doug. Well done!

Hi Doug! Your preview review of the Jinhao X850 model is very interesting. I believe that more than an improvement of the X450 it is actually a free one and seems to be a valid inspiration from Sailor 1911. Elements such as weight and dimensions are very subjective for each user and also depends a lot on what you write, for example scientific writing or memoirs. Thanks for all! Happy New Year!

Well Sir Doug, thanks for the video. I knew Jinhao would at some point really bring out something some day and apparently, they're coming out with this, the X850, which I thought was going to be a Montblanc 146, same with the X350 standing for the 144. Thanks for continously updating us, Sir Doug

My current run of fountain pens started with the X750, still a favourite
I think it may have been the X450 that was my first Chinese pen purchase about 4 or 5 years ago that started my addiction too and its still one of my favourite pens today, in fact I have a few in different colours including the marbled blue one you have. I also own way to many guitars, or so my wife keep telling me!! Really enjoying your channel.

I have a Jinhao x 850 and it is a great all around pen. I agree with you on all of your points. As I was watching, I was thinking about other colors and I hope they come out with a few soon. Along with the x 159, the x 850 is among my favorites of the Chinese fountain pens. Great review!

Thank you for this review! I purchased the X850 as soon as I saw it on Aliexpress. It just came in. I have several 450's and 750's in my collection but this looked a lot like the x159 so I gave it a shot. I would have preferred an injection molded pen (the paint on brass pens will chip if not careful) but this is not bad at all. It has the best attributes from the 450/750's and the looks of the x159 in a smaller package. I especially like the added gasket to seal the nib unit after filling. The fine nib is also nice and wet with only a touch of feedback -- better than my 450/750's if that's possible. One final note, I had an old Jinhao159 that was terribly chipped due to years of abuse. Rather than touch up the paint, I chose to strip off all of the paint. The result was a pleasing industrial steel & brass look that is now impossible to chip. I'm sure the same is possible with the x850.

The changes on the x850 that give it a more refined and sleeker look are definite improvements over the x450. I wish the x850 was made from injection molded resin instead of metal. That being said, It is still a desirable pen, especially with that butterfly smooth nib and great price. I wish more expensive pen manufacturers would produce pens that write as well right out of the box. I started with the x450. I still have 3 of them. I agree they are built like a tank. Thanks for an excellent review and comparison. 👍👍👍+++😎!

I love that this chanel dedicates time (and money) to the affordable pens. High end pens are beautiful, but I'd rather buy 2-3 pens each year than have to save my hobby money for multiple years for one pen.... That still seems at risk of various nib issues from many brands.

Happy New Year Doug! I'm glad Jinhao is making improvements to their models, but I'm passing on this one. Like yourself the older model I bought early in my revived interest in fountain pens, and they were quickly supplanted by other models. I liked the snap on cap and grip and form, but the weight and balance didnt work for me. But I'm excited to see they are still ugging away, and I see there is a 350 model? Looks like a smaller version.

I was going to avoid this pen due to the brass construction but unposted the weight is not bad. That it also does reverse writing is a bonus. Certainly a pen worth considering for purchase. I do wish that Jinhao would offer a piston filler other than the 100 Anniversary (that is Jinhao, isn't it?). Great review, Doug.

I find it odd that Jinhao doesn't make a piston filler.
Jinhao certainly is raising the bar with their product line. The x350 looks interesting. As for reverse writers my narwhal Nautilus ebonite with medium nib is wonderful for reverse writing. Like having two pens in one. Thanks again for the great review video. Love the Witchita Lineman tune as well 👌 👍

I have a few x450s floating around, they generally write very well, but I don't find myself using them. A combination of that ugly clip, the odd section, and several having a snap cap that requires excessive force to remove is enough to discourage me from using them to the point that I leave them uninked - they're only going to dry out anyway. The x850 looks like enough of an improvement to be worth looking into, though - and the x350 might be even more so, given the more conventional section design.
@danemmanuel8066
Жыл бұрын
Does the X850 and the X350 have any major differences? Aside from the section?
I like what Jinhao have pulled out of the hat so far, and went for the Jinhao 80, despite being a cartridge filler. The nib was excellent, being smooth and juicy enough. And quite comfortable to use. But, I'm still hankering for a piston filler from Jinhao. One day, perhaps. This X850 sadly won't be in my Wish list, simply because of the ridged section. It's not right for me, but it looks classically elegant, and ticks most of my other boxes. I'll see if the X750 replacement will fit the bill, if it comes across your desk one day. Thanks for the review.

although i used fountain pens in the past because dad used to write with his fpens but i did not pay much attention. but during 2019, i bought a few x450 and x750 those made me fall in love with fpens. i did not pick up a ball point since then.
Interesting developments! I didn't get on well with the X450 because my grip is *slightly off from the standard tripod. I do, however, love my X750 (just filled it earlier with Waterman Black, as it happens), and did have two, but gifted one to my prospective d-i-l when they were going through a difficult time (she went on to buy an X450, and, last I heard, had other pens on order - Penabling Accomplished ✔️) So the X850 and X350 - both available for under a tenner for the UK - are very attractive, not least because a Medium nib is an option.* I am waiting for a black/chrome version to come out, mind, before I spend my cash. * Yes, I AM looking at you, X159! I have an x350 on the way.
Hi Doug. Thanks for your review of the X850. I had hoped this pen would be an injected moulded plastic model along similar lines to the X159. I think, for Jinhao, this was an opportunity missed to make the X850 even better. However, there are still many good features and plenty reasons to be cheerful. The X850 does look more refined with a few subtle changes over the X450. I wonder if the latter will be phased out eventually when current stocks are exhausted. There seems little point in Jinhao keeping the X450 in their range when the X850 performs and looks so much better. I look forward to your appraisal of the new X350 and what differences there are between it and the X850.

I got my x350 a couple of weeks ago. Still waiting on the x850 that I ordered at the same time. The x350 is the same length as the x450 and x750 with a slightly thinner and straighter body. The grip is also a fair amount narrower as well. I think it sits in a nice spot as the smallest of the #6 JinHao brass pens.
@animula6908

Because the 450 is wildly popular might be a good reason to keep it around. Even the 159, for people who have tremble and benefit from weighted pens for steadiness. I’m a big believer in adding to what’s available instead of changing it and then trying to eradicate the previous offerings. Maybe it’s just me though.
Ouh! Interesting! I have several x450s in my arsenal of "write at work" pens, inked up in Sepia Black, Burgundy and Lamy Blue for use on my patient data sheets and notes in general. They are heavy and nice but unlike my Pelikan Souverän M400 they won't cause a choleric fit If lost or damaged...😉 And now the X850 corrects the one downside of the x450: the garish Clip and oversized band. Awesome! Thanks for the review! Best regards Raoul G. Kunz

There's no question that the screw-on lid and the new clip on the x850 are vastly superior to the old x450. Thanks for uploading another informative video, though I see no advantage over my favourite Jinhao 159.
Happy new year. I have (a) questions: Does the barrel of the x450 fit on the section of the x850 (and wich cap fits then?)? Thanks for the answer(s) and best regards.
@InkquiringMinds
Жыл бұрын
Yes the barrel of the x450 will go on the section of the x850 but then neither cap will go on the pen.
I have five X450 ‘s and four X70’s. For some reason the blue like you have provides one of my favorite writing experiences right up there with my Platinums, Pilots, Sailor, Montagrappa, and many others. I will admit that the blue is not the prettiest of the Jinhao’s and in my opinion looks almost cheap in appearance, but it is fantastic in the hand. I prefer the X450 grip but don’t mind the more round X750. I also really in enjoy the #8 nib on my X159, just wish it came in other nib widths. And, I agree with other comments on the quality of the Hong Dien and Moonman/Majohn pens. The extra fine nib on my Majohn A1 defies the laws of physics with its smoothness. I will probably pass on the 850 due to the screw cap. Thanks for another great video.

Why do you think the 18kgp is BS? I always assumed that plating used so little gold that it was probably true, and the BS was in writing 18k on there since "gp" is a non-standard abbreviation so they're implying it's solid gold.

Not sure, but I think 18kgp is not necessarily a lie. It's just plating, very thin layer, and that's not really that expensive. One headphone jack plated in gold probably has more gold than #6 two tone nib would have. Just saying, not that's important, at the end of the day, it's a steel nib and it behaves like one.

Yeah, my sarcasm has to do with the microscopic amount of gold in that 18kgp plating that is at most a micron thick. It reminds me of a story my friend told me when he did some work in a bakery. He was a millwright and was fixing a machine and saw an employee throw a handful of powder into a 1000 gallon vat. He asked "What was that?". The guy said "Oh that's enriched bread". LOL

Understoid. Btw, great channel you have growing here. I rediscovered fountain pens about six months ago, but since I'm on a tight budget and I like to experiment with inks, Jinhao's are my go to. Just yesterday I received four x450, two 159, three x159. Didn't have the chance to test them yet (I already had x159, I had to order more in different colours, I liked the pen so much). Have a couple of x750 and jinhao 75. Yes, sometimes the nib is a dud, but usually I manage to tune it and smooth it out using nail polishing block (micro mesh is out of the budget, shipping to Serbia would cost more than my current fountain pen collection ). This is true!
in my honest opinion the prices for both X850 & X350 are too much given the pens themselves, the improvements are indeed welcomed but 12€ & 9€ are early adopters prices --- I imagine once more stores start to carry 'em prices will drop ... compare with a X159 which today you can get for less than 6€ or the very same being replaced (X450/750) which can be found around 5€ or less all shipping included in AE, make these new ones less than appealing to me at this time

Considering the awful Sheaffer VFM and the Parker Jotter fountain pens (made in China) sell for twice as much, I'd say the x850 is priced fairly.

For $9, _obviously_ ! At least it doesn't actually _say_ 18k gold plated.
Nice video as always. Thank you. Off subject. - I am soo glad you haven't succumbed to the temptation to generate lots of meaningless, purposeless videos as some others are doing. I do not take pleasure in tapping that "unsubscribe" button.
