Jimmy Smith, through his wonderful playing, made the Hammond a truly major voice in jazz..Those of us learning to play took what we could from his albums of the 60's..His ideas, feel & technique were fantastic.

I grew up with B3 C3 A100...church organs. We had 4 VERY good organists in town. Those organs sounded good. But this is something else. Old David Letterman show with Paul Schaffer. He played a multimillion dollar superstock organ....its like a dragster or indy car. That sound is so warm , friendly .The attack percussive....flawless. I'm a drummer....he makes me wish

The Incredible Jimmy Smith in one of his best performances. Since I have discovered it in 1964, it always arouses in me the same emotion. In our parties in Florence, we used to play this music, minimizing the lights, when the bodies were starting to be tired and senses to awaken squeezing girlfriends. No voices voices, but deep sighs from time to time

Elmir, the guitarist is actually Mark Whitfield. Jimmy played a lot with Phil Upchurch, but on this session it's Whitfield. The give away, other than that fluid rapid style and guitar tucked up high like that, is Upchurch had his trademark grey hair flair at the front. Compare Mark's live stuff, a super icon in his own right, which is why he's up there with Jimmy and the boys!

@Frank Heuvelman actually JS used mostly his left hand on the lower manual to play the actual bass lines... using the pedals for accentuation of the notes by lightly tapping on one note as he played the bass line with his left hand...sometimes he would actual play full lines on the bass pedal..ghosting his left hand..mostly on turnarounds..

Jimmy Smith, the all-time master of the Hammond organ. Don't forget too that besides finessing both manuals of the organ he also provided all his own bass lines on the pedals and he was brilliant at that too. I still get thrills listening to his walking bass on "When I Grow Too Old To Dream" from the "Back At the Chicken Shack" LP.

I was fortunate enough to play with a great guitarist that was in Jimmy's performing group. He and Jimmy both lived in Sacramento, so it's not out of the ordinary to have that opportunity, since I live in Reno, a hundred or so miles West of here. When someone says they played with a star like Jimmy Smith, they very well might be telling the truth.
