Thanks for posting ! I bought this GP issue when it came out in 1986. Saw JLV three times playing in my hometown Hamburg in Germany in the 1980's. This GP issue is a tresure .

I love Jimmie's tone on this record. He does a great slow bend. He opened for Hendrix back in the day.

This was my introduction to these guys. Wore the soundpage out back in high school and it still kills me every time.

I remember buying this issue when I was in high school. I still have it. This tune is just swingin'!

I bought this GP issue when it came out as well. I was aware of SRV at that point and wanted to see what Jimmie was all about. When I heard what they had put on this record, that was it. It was nearly all blues for me after that. I had spent years trying to play like the heavy metal guys on MTV. But that all changed. This record is full of awesome chops and the rythnms guitar tracks taught me what I could be doing while someone else was playing lead. It really helped me out a lot. I still have the magazine somewhere but I lost the record. Thanks for memories.

Indeed! How 'bout that little thing he does at the end of the turnaround at 3:34 where he lands on the 5? My remembrance of that riff back when this first came out is what brought me here! Never heard anyone play that before, nor since (not even JLV, himself). B.t.w., you obviously know that the credits were mixed up on the label- I remember that issue causing confusion back then!

I had this issue too but had been aware of these guys for years at this point. in 1978, Stevie Vaughn came to a place in Charlotte called the Double Door Inn , my home away from home and one of the premier places in the country for a young kid to hang and see all manner of great guitarists and bands in the 70's, 80, and beyond. I was 18 and floored. If anyone saw him back then, you will be aware of just what an impact he had in the bar scene - No one, I mean NO ONE was doing that kind of stuff at that level then. There are lots of guys that sound like that today because of him. I had seen the 1st T-birds album (Girls Go Wild) in the record store and thought the cover was kind of neat but never knew anything about it. After Stevie, The T-Birds, Roomful (W/Ronnie Earl Horvath @ that time), Dukes 1st band that I'm aware of, and Duke himself, all played At the DDI, along w/countless others. This recording is an excellent example of how Jimmie's style stacks up against a more traditionally jazzy and melodic style of blues playing. If you were like me at all, Jimmie's style was a bit of an acquired taste. After seeing Stevie, I ran out and bought Girls Go Wild and thought, man, Stevie didn't teach Jimmie too much did he? As time went on, I matured and realized the difference between a guitar hero and a guitar player. These 2 brothers cover both of those categories as good as anyone past or present. I became a Jimmie Vaughn freak (and still am to this day) and when asked who my fav guitar man is it will always be JLV. We went and saw the T-Birds any chance we got, and would sneak in cassette recorders and record the shows. I studied him so much, for so long, I started sounding like him and realized that I needed to find my own voice which, ironically, sounded a lot more like Duke haha. I could write a book on the subtle nuances of JLV's spartan style but, here is not the place. Oh well, sorry for the long post but let me say this: If you are studying American style blues or Rock&Roll guitar, you couldn't find better study material that all things Jimmie Vaughn.

A Fine commentary Bob! I was born 7 raised in Dallas and we think mighty highly of the boys around here. I agree Jimmie is a "Mature" thing we all start out wanting to be Stevie and grow into the mastery of subtlties like Jimmie Lee did. Jimmie was so good at the Hendrix and Clapton riffs his band opened for Jimi in 1968. Little known fact. In Step was really revealing a new depth of Stevie and I often wonder what his style would have been when he really found his place.

Mississippi delta down by the river side...they both played at delta blues fest..I dig jimmie lee Vaughan..had fab tburds autograph..I had it,and still have it boxed away..

Very interesting post. I find pure joy when listening to both Stevie Ray or Jimmie. Yes, different styles but both superb, both excellent.

Hey Bob, what I got from that issue besides the flexi-disc was a Jimmie going through albums he and Stevie grew up listening to and taking licks from. Like with Clapton I learned so much going to what he listened to. Stay safe God bless Rock on.

I love hearing stories from the DDI! I only got to go a couple times before they shit down ND also got to play there during a blues jam. I was so honored to stand on that stage! I have a peice of thr stage now on my wall

Whoever posted this has their audio channels flipped! The soundpage says "Jimmie Vaughan-right channel", but that is DEFINITELY Jimmie in the left channel!!! I'm a huge fan of both him and Duke, and this is definietly flipped! I've seen the same mistake happen with a number of Allman Brothers uploads. I use to love those Guitar Player soundpages. I still have the mags, but the soundpages themselves were either lost or worn out many years ago! This song kicks ass!!!

Jimmie was absolutely stunning in the 80's, he was at his top, no doubts. Here he plays at the same level of a giant like Duke Robillard adding his own things (some hidden, like others pointed out). Not too many players could do it here without overplaying, still maintaining a strong and unique personality. Not a 'virtuoso' like Duke but still another giant.

Jimmi Vaughan and other man are music legend of the Blue's and are good in rock..brother Stevie Ray Vaughan is deceased I'm a helicopter crash that took his life and three others,including the pilot..Jimmi had loads of grief but knew his brother was with his mom and dad in heaven..Jimmi played in a band most of all his young years and after Stevie died Jimmi went out on his own to perform and play the best he could..Jimmi was of the best and lives on to talk about Stevie and how great he was and if he had lived longer,there is no telling of what he would have written and produced hisself

Love Duke Robillard but this is some of Jimmie's hottest playing EVER. My personal favorite of his work.

Still have this Soundpage in my collection as well, played a lot too so not sure about the quality but this one really sounds superb ! Loved to listen to these guys so much and also to the Fabulous Thunderbirds and to Stevie of course, r.i.p.

@vachalia yeah great analogy with the "Orchestra" as great a Lead as Jimmie is people don't grasp just what a Hell of a Rhythm player he is as well as Stevie. The call and response from 3:00-4:08 is totally murderous! This is why I don't listen to radio anymore. Unless its KNON or KKDA in Dallas.

Thom Enright who passed away in 2012 and was a great musician. I should state Thom was a hell of guitar player as well. Tom DeQuattro on drums also has passed away both were in Dukes band at the time.
