I became a Cream fan a few months before they broke up, and during that time, Eric Clapton ruled! He had it all; tone, taste, feel, the touch, improvisation skill, phrasing...... In that year of 68 I also got into Jimi Hendrix. If you're into all that showmanship stuff, that's fine. However, you can't see that when you're listening to a record on the turntable! For whatever reason, Clapton's playing changed after 1970. Gone was the absolute brilliance he exhibited in his Cream days.

I agree with everything you said. I saw Cream in NYC at Madison Garden in 1968 and it's still the best concert I've ever seen. Putting together the melodic guitar riffs that he did on the Wheels Of Fire album live performance of Crossroads was and will never be matched, by Hendrix, by anybody.
