Steranko has an extraordinary later-life Dennis Hopper aura about him, in appearance but especially in speech and mannerisms. Helluva head of hair on the ol' maestro. Love the man.

I was at a ComicCon in St. Louis in 2004 promoting my good friend, Gerald Walker's paintings. Mr. Steranko was very gracious with his time and spent about 15 minutes with me at my booth discussing Gerald's work. What was most interesting to me was that I didn't feel like I was speaking with a comic art icon, but instead was having a conversation with a college art professor. His knowledge of art history in general and specifically color theory and design is impressive. He did like what he saw, especially Gerald's painting of "The Tuvela", and gave me a wink when he said, "Who's that guy?" pointing at his version of Mr. Miracle #1. He also discussed Frazetta's ego when commenting on his ability to successfully produce paintings with the main characters all facing AWAY from the viewer, as is the case in a few of Gerald's paintings. If anyone is interested, here is a webpage I built for Gerald: www.agraphicstateofmind.com/gerald_walker.html

I love the respect and adoration Steranko had for Jack Kirby. “The Warrior God of Comics” as Jim called him.

Read somewhere, that he was the first artist offered the ff book after kirby quit, and he passed on it.Wish he had done at least one or two issues.
