If you look at the guys that respect Russo and have given him his props publicly; HBK, Nash, Flair, Austin, The Rock, Jericho, Mick Foley, even Russo’s own brand is filled with people like Stevie Ray, Stevie Richards, Dr Tom Prichard, Dutch Mantell, Kevin Sullivan, Shane Douglas, EC3, he is liked, but seems to be hated particularly by those whose jobs he risked from his success and loathed more because of the fact he has no interest working with WWE and can bury them publicly

At first Russo's booking was great but it got old really fast. I mean while in WCW the gimmick matches got bad and stale, like half the dam show was "Fill in the blank" on a pole match, they literally even did a a "pole on a pole" match. Sure, as JR points out he booked some matches that were great matches but the gimmicks of the match sucked, noone wants to see Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan in a "dildo on a pole" match..... the matches were great booking the stupid gimmicks that the match were was stupid and that's what ultimately killed WCW. I mean it's a good thing Russo wasn't booking in WWF during the Eddie versus Rey over Dom fued because sure as shit Russo would book a "Dom on a pole" match where Dom is duct taped to a pole...... great matches as far as booking goes that gimmicks and bullshit intertwined in the matches sucks.

My understanding of Russo’s booking is he can and has had good ideas it’s just he needs someone to say no and also others to work them out. That’s why he wasn’t too bad in the WWF but when he jumped to WCW where he was the head with almost no one to say no, he went insane

He ran a video store, is a big movie and TV fan, so is probably the best they’d have in providing these little nuances on weekly TV and how to string them all together, at least for the casual viewer. I think if he had Cornette to iron out his ideas so they fitted with the tradition, they could create another 1997 year of TV

@Sum body the story presented isn’t invalidated. Just because he was still head in WWF, McMahon still had final say, along with other people like Cornette, Patterson, and Ross still being there. So I’m not presenting anything false

@Sum body What was the lie? Cornette and a couple others were still there up to December of 1997, so that accounts for any ideas before that. And second any ideas Russo came up with independently afterward we’re still heavily ironed out by McMahon, at a minimum. Remember even if Russo is head, he still needs approval from McMahon, who would also edit the ideas and change up until the shot it. Russo isn’t a genius, at best he got lucky and ripped off Bischoff, who himself was ripping off Paul Heyman, who had his ideas heavily edited to work. At worst he was a compulsive idiot when it came to booking, see WCW and TNA.

You can say a lot of things about Russo as a person, and as a booker, but he really cared about what he did. He tried to get every single guy on the roster over. I cannot name one booker that devoted as much time to the lower card guys as Russo did. I have been watching wrestling for over 30 years, and have followed about 20 different promotions closely over the years, and no one used the entire roster the way that Russo did. Russo needed a filter, but he was very good at creating stars, and maximizing the returns on each guy and playing to their strengths rather than their weaknesses.

I'll never understand why people say Russo needed McMahon as a filter. McMahon needed Russo as a filter and the product for the last 20 years proves that. Hell, go back to 1993-1995 to see how badly McMahon needed a filter. He thought that crap was good lol. People constantly say McMahon is out of touch and needs to let someone else take charge, so why is it in the sole case of Vince Russo he's suddenly this filter that prevented a ton of so-called bad ideas? It's just a way to discredit Russo's contributions and creativity.

I'm not a veteran watcher, but what it seems like to me is that Russo was an ideas guy, and the fact that he didn't have an internal filter meant that *all* of his pitches would make it to the outside, to be scrutinized externally. So in the Federation, that meant there was no shortage of potential premises that the creative team, with McMahon himself as the final say, could put together. So WWF had this brilliantly diverse stream of storylines, conquered the airwaves - so the WCW top brass believe that Russia straight up shat gold bricks and hired him. They didn't know that without proper oversight, all they'd get was heaps of dung with gold nuggets scattered somewhere inside.

DDP also was champ but had been feuding with the other guys for so many years it wasnt fresh. Russo had Bret get the belt, created a nice feud with Goldberg who had vanished out of title picture previously, elevated Sid and made Benoit a main eventer. I'll be the guy to say... Russo made the attitude era, the greatest era we've ever seen or ever will, it was completely and utterly entertaining, it never took itself too seriously and that's why its went down hill now, they're trying too hard and it's not entertaining in the slightest, kayfabe died and so did characters to a large extent, lack of characters just isn't entertaining

If people rewatch 1999, It is so pointless majority of it because of Russo, 90% ended in no contest and DQ’s and the matches would end with no finish and they’d play the wrestlers music but no one actually won.

The issue with those country vs country rivalries/storylines is that the wwe for the MOST PART portrays the USA as the babyface and the opposing country as heels/lesser than. I do understand that the company is American based but when you have storylines like this one you have to take into consideration not offending fans of other countries. (who also make you money). I certainly don't want to turn on the television and witness my country always be portrayed as the heel nation. This is the toxicity that was being sold to appease the American audience and its not necessary. Americans tend to digest this kind of content literally.

You people seriously need to go and look up some facts because those of you who come out with the tired old "Urhhhh he killed TNA and DUBYA SEE DUBYA MAH RASSLIN'!" are completely clueless. Vince McMahon needed Russo as his filter because he's so out of touch with modern society. People who have worked with him say he's never even gone to the cinema to see a movie. Russo's job was to draw as many viewers to the TV product as he possibly could, and he did that in 2 out of the 3 companies he worked for. What do those 2 companies have in common? They gave him the time to do so. Look at any TV show that has been a ratings hit - they all took years to reach their height. How long did WCW give him in sole charge? 3 months.

Do your homework. Even if WCW hadn't been bleeding money, which it had been doing both before and after Russo was in charge due to all those guaranteed contracts, the AOL-Time Warner merger ensured that their TV shows were going to be cancelled anyway. The new bosses simply did not want to be in pro wrestling. Russo took over TNA around 2003. How was TNA doing around 2008 to 2010, still very much under Russo's booking style?

@@raypelino7713 Saturday Night was taken off the air in 2000, well into WCW's misfortune and slump and NOT during Russo's era but the Russo-Bischoff collaboration, the same one that gave us Bash at the Beach 2000 a month prior. Competition to go against WWF began in Bischoff's era in 1995, back when Russo was still merely a writer for WWF. Finally, Russo left TNA in 2010. TNA was still hot in 2012. Russo had been working with TNA since 2003, so if he "killed" it, not only did he suck at killing it, he spent 7 years killing it backwards into prominence.
