@@adamdavis1737 I guess Steve was concerned his run as a babyface would go stale. I personally didn't mind the twist, but his heel run didn't really pay off in the long term. I don't see how being a tweener would have worked either from some other comments I've read because having McMahon help him win the match only for Steve to give him a stunner at the end would also feel stupid.

Bottom line, Austin had nobody to work work with after Mania 17. Rock left and Triple H wasnt ready to turn babyface. Nobody wanted to see Austin work with Taker for the 100th time either. Wasnt until August when they started pushing Kurt Angle again did Steve have a worthy opponent. Say what you will about the Invasion stuff, Austin vs Angle was awesome.

The thing is, as soon as WWE got legit heels i.e. NWO, Brock Lesnar, by that time Austin didn't want to work with any of them. In a way they hitched too much onto Stone Cold and they couldn't build their own heels until Lesnar. But at that point, they should have just rode Austin til the fans got tired of him, if that could ever happen.

This was the end of wrestling for me. The huge build up for the epic showdown at WrestleMania17 was how Austin needed to beat Rock. He had to beat him. So he sold his soul to the devil to do it. It was the one thing that would not be possible for Austin to sell out. Coincidentally or not it was also when the ratings fell, Vince bought WCW so there was no competition. I still watched it for another year or so but with Rock lost to Hollywood and the other wrestlers not bringing it as much (other than Angle who was a standout) there wasn't much with the storyline or rivalries left. WWF still did good riding on the curtails of what happened before, but after WM17 it was the beginning of the end.

You gotta know that The Rock was on his way out to shoot The Scorpion King. WWF at the time had to fill that missing piece for 3 months. In my honest opinion, Austin could’ve and should’ve stayed baby face and have that momentum he had 3 years prior after WrestleMania 14. But the heel lists were thin. I’m sure he could’ve feuded with Triple H again, but the I think the fans had that culmination at No Way Out. Angle could’ve been next, but that feud would’ve been boring. The next big heel would’ve been the Big Show, that would’ve been terrible as well. With the Invasion coming, Austin would’ve had more heel players in the form of WCW and ECW. It is what it is.
