The Bret Austin feud was better television. Unfortunately the Bret Shawn feud was more behind the scenes than anything. They only wrestled twice ever after they were both made men. One with both as faces and the other with both as tweeners. There wasn’t much feud build up to either of those matches

This was the beginning of Bret Hart's 'justified heel' phase. His kayfabed complaint actually rings true. "60 minute iron man match". The challenger had 60 minutes to score more falls than the champion. He did not succeed. Bret was the "new gen" champ, even though he won the title close to WM9 after being in WM2. He probably kicked off the attitude era with his post-Sid match promo, but never gets recognized as AE performer. He seemed like his character was "Cause Vince has no else place to go," and that should have been his WCW character. Although I think they tried making him a "no label" type, but it was put over poorly and confused.

Believe it or not, I disagree with the people who say Bret's mic work wasn't very good. He was good as a face or a heel...and people might not believe this, but that's hard to pull off. It's easy to tell the fans piss off and I'm the best and that other guy sucks, and I'm this and I'm that and be the arrogant asshole scenery chewing heel, but it's quite another thing to have to be the underdog and get people to like you yet still hold yourself with pride and confidence. Bret was good as a face and pretty darn good as a heel. Shawn's mic work was spectacular as a heel...but sorry to tick off Shawn fans...he sucked fucking balls as a face.

I actually think Shawn's message to Earl was directed at Jose Lothario, who stepped into the ring to celebrate with Shawn after the pinfall. You can see Earl go directly to Jose to relay the message after and he gets out right away. It's been revealed that Shawn during this period was against the idea of having Jose with him at all, but Vince thought it would help his babyface image to have his trainer by his side. Shawn was so paranoid at this time that he was even afraid of Jose stealing his shine, so it only makes sense that Shawn would tell Earl to get rid of him because I'm certain that the whole title celebration moment was planned out in his head.

Both Shawn and Bret were great. Just that Shawn was a egotistical asshole because of the Kliq. Bret had an ego but he didn’t have mic skills to let it out like Shawn did. They both complimented each other because both had great wrestling chemistry. They were fun to watch and it’s too bad Vince had to do the screw job. Bret could have taken a pay cut because what happened to Bret in WCW was so unlucky and it’s a shame that Eric Bischoff had no idea how to use Bret to his full potential. Bill Goldberg was not a wrestler and it shows when you watch the match that ended Brets career he had no idea how to do a wrestling kick and just blatantly kicked Bret in the head full force. Everyone says that Bret is sour and negative all the time but I just think he wanted his career to last longer then it did.

@@Wongwongwong10000 I think Bret had every reason to be a bit bitter, though he was being too stubborn for his own good. Shawn always came off obnoxiously arrogant and still comes off disingenuous to me. He was a good performer but he started the high spot wrestling trend that I hate. I think Pro Wrestling would have been better off if an entire generation emulated Bret Hart rather than Shawn Michaels. It sucks now, it's cookie cutter, and a bunch of high spots with no psychology which kills whatever kayfabe is still left.

I loved it and I was on the edge of my seat, especially when time was running out and nobody had a single fall. I thought bret had won then it restarted and shawn won. Shawn and Bret I thought had great matches. Never liked Babyface Shawn in this era, much preferred heel Shawn. I think Bret was the most consistent performer (he had less stinkers), but Shawn could have the best matches. I also think that Bret’s matches were better than Shawn’s at the end of Bret’s run in WWF. Bret I think had better matches with Austin, Taker and Sid. I think that passing the torch to Austin, would have been much more better as Bret had 4-0 wins over Austin. Without Tyson everyone would have forgotten the Shawn/Austin match wrestlemania.

I was at the Austin house show where Bret and Shawn wrestled. It was pretty cool because Razor, Diesel and Undertaker were all advertised as being on the show. Before the show started the ring announcer stated that all of them wouldn’t be appearing and offered anyone the opportunity to go to the box office for a full refund. A few people got up out of their seats and proceeded to make their way to get a refund. The announcer then to read off the matches and then stated that the WWF title would still be defended and the opponent would none other than Shawn Michaels. The Undertaker was the advertised opponent and this was weeks before the iron man match at WM. Needless to say the crowd popped big and the majority of people who got up to get refunds hustled their way back to their seats to watch the show. It was a solid show. Matches were good, main even was awesome and I can remember the crowd losing their shit when Goldust came out. I’m guessing due to both him and his dad being from Austin. Good times

To be honest I think a LOT of the Bret Hart/Shawn Michaels feud was just theater. I don't doubt that they didn't care for one another or sometimes fought, but too many of Michaels' A-hole moments on television have turned out to have been planned for me to think he wasn't playing to the camera just a little bit when he cussed out Bret, and according to Bruce everyone was yelling at Bret because the PPV needed to end with Shawn's celebration and Bret's dejection. People cuss like sailors in the entertainment industry and in sports, including WWE, and I think that was just "communication" back in the day. I don't entirely trust Bret when it comes to him saying that people stiffed him because he also didn't trust guys like Flair and Malenko to not try and take liberties with him, and I think he's either still trying to keep the Hart/Michaels feud alive or his health problems have affected his mind over the years to the point he mixes up kayfabe and reality (no offense meant but even Jericho has talked about Bret being "odd" sometimes). Overall, I didn't care for the match and I think a lot of what Bret wrote in his book is either sour grapes, him sticking to kayfabe (partially), or him mixing the two together.

Bret and Shawn were kept apart from November 1992 to March 1996. That was strategic planning by McMahon/Patterson I'm guessing. Shawn forfeited the IC title for not defending the title in 1993. Shawn and Diesel forfeited the tag titles in 94 after splitting. Shawn had managed Diesel for several months without having his own match. Bret was put in the mid card with Hakushi, Jerry Lawler and Isaac Yankeem. Bret and Shawn faced each other for the first time in 1990. McMahon saw potential in both Bret and Shawn and put in a long term plan before having his two top stars face off. Bret should have gotten one fall by count-out. Shawn was a desperate loser and he needed old man Jose to distract the referee. Jose Lothario screwed Bret !

Shawn Michaels and (surely) Bret Hart are two of my favorite all-time singles wrestlers, but I didn't care too much for this particular Wrestlemania match. I think the approach was wrong. They should have had multiple finishes.....and then perhaps the sudden death portion after a tie on falls. There were too many clinches and mat action. Shawn and Bret had way better matches together in my opinion - a King of the Ring match comes to mind as one of their best ppv matches ever.
