I loved how Bobby Heenan would sell and praise the Heels on commentary. He'd make them sound like and upstanding Babyface. He kept me dying.😂😂😂 His presence is definitely missed.

Unlike some, when Hogan turned, he still thought of him as scum on commentary. Such consistency!

My favorite Heenan moment was when Hogan turned Heel and Bobby was shouting 'I told you, I told you all ' over and over again. a great, great moment. totally iconic.

Also Jesse Ventura pointed out how Hogan as a face still used heel tactics and fans loved him. I think wrestlemania 4 and summerslam 89 he did some cheap heel moves?

And so fitting, however and this is of course relying on two things...if Heenan was healthy and had a desire to manage again and Bischoff would have been content with staying behind the commentator's desk, Heenan managing Hogan in the nWo would have been epic! After all, back in 1987 no one ever thought Andre would ever align with Heenan. Hogan's heel turn with Heenan as his manager would have been an extra exclamation point! However, with Heenan retired form managing him still maintaining anti-Hogan sentiment was great just the same.

He should have mentioned that WCW gave him health insurance. Bobby was fond of saying he never had it until he worked for WCW

Only in the last few years did I ever see the AWA recordings with Bobby, Gene, Hogan, etc.

Bobby Heenan was a treasure, just like Gorilla Monsoon and Mean Gene.

Agree. Before J.R. and King there was Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby "the brain" Heenan. That was the first announcer team I saw when I started wrestling as a kid and they were tremendous. Their chemistry was dynamic.

Maybe then, their programming wouldn't sound like the announcers watched the match the day before, & were simply giving a recap. It's an absolute snooze fest, when it comes to commentary.

That is true. Onita wrecked his neck in Japan in 1983 before he even went to the WWE. He didn't have proper surgery on the injury until he got Turner health insurance in 1995. The story is that at that time of his life, getting on employer group health insurance was a whole lot more important than money was.

I always appreciate when people recognize that there were more reasons people went to WCW than just simply annual income. Lots of people enjoy saying the ATM Eric line, but he's mentioned that a lot of people who came to WCW didn't actually make more because they didn't have the attendance and merch to pay like WWF did on discretionary income so he offered guaranteed contracts with less dates to compete. A lot of people forget to calculate that WCW may have been more money for some, but for many it was simply good money while having a much higher standard of living by not having to be on the road all the time.

Nobody did it better than Bobby "the Brain" Heenan. A great heel manager, excellent color commentator, and one of the funniest human beings in the world 🌎. May God rest his soul.

I say this on almost every video I see about this man. Bobby Heenan, outside of Vince McMahon himself, is the most important figure in the history of professional wrestling. At minimal he’s on the mt Rushmore. And that’s saying a lot seeing he wasn’t a prominent in ring performer. Bobby Heenan was the best mouthpiece ever. He was funny. He was witty. He just had a feel for the business in ways that most people didn’t understand. He knew how to promote intrigue even when performers weren’t wrestling. He knew how to get himself and his guys heat. He knew how to get his opponent over and his fellow announcer over. The 80s globalized the business not just because of hogan and warrior but because Bobby Heenan was there to get hogan and warrior over and to present them with a stable of quality heels to oppose them. You can say something similar about gene but gene wasn’t as involved as Bobby. Simply put Bobby was the best this business has ever seen and the wrestling business will never be the same because there will never be another person like Bobby Heenan. To this day I sometimes turn on the WWE network and listen to shows with Bobby on it just as background noise while I do work. Don’t even watch the matches. That’s how great he was.

Matt perhaps. It’s a fair argument because in most cases the wrestlers are more important than the supporting cast. Kinda like how players are more important than the coaches in sports. However in some cases there are coaches that matter more than the players. I’m not going to fight anyone saying that wrestlers are more important than managers and announcers. But in Bobby’s case he did so much for the promotion in so many different ways. He was the Swiss Army knife. I think the average fan doesn’t realize how important a mouthpiece is in wrestling. Paul hey man is more important than 95 percent of the roster in WWE Back in the days Bobby was even more than that to WWE. He managed 10 guys, most of which couldn’t talk. He was a heat magnet so that a baby face always had credible opponents. He bumped in the ring. He provided comic relief. He did talk shows. He did all the interviews for his guys. Later on he announced. A wrestler contributes to one match and one story line a night. Back in the day he contributed to 95 percent of the product and got everyone over doing it. Yes hulk and Austin made more money then anyone. But outside or hulk and Austin and probably flair I think Bobby was more important than anyone in the history of the business. You can argue guys like Shawn bret warrior Macho rock undertaker. Really big names. I ain’t gonna fight you over that. Im just saying there is argument to be made that Bobby was more important than everyone besides the huge money draws. When wrestling exploded Bobby Heenan was the golden era in the 80s. Even at Bobby’s worst, Bobby was a primary voice of the Monday night wars. for every hero there has to be some obstacle and villain to overcome. No one did it better than Bobby and with more style wit and humor. He made you wanna hate him but deep down you couldn’t because he was too funny

It was only fitting to see "The Brain", "Mean Gene", and Hogan in WCW in the mid 90's, after the trio had been in the AWA and the WWF. Those three elevated WCW back into good times, because quite honest, I thought WCW mostly stunk from 89 until these guys arrived. Great Characters, and great legends of pro wrestling.

Yeah. The three of them went to the WWE for money in the 1980s and went to WCW for the same reason in the 1990s. Its not hard to understand. And as Brisco's termination recently proved, even if Vince McMahon owes you everything and promises you a job for life, his word means nothing and he will forget you when he is done with you. And as Oliver Luck found out, even if you have a signed contract with Vince McMahon saying you will be paid a certain amount of money, that doesn't mean anything either.

Hootie, Weasel, and Gene elevated WCW into the Dungeon of Doom era. Absolute legends of the squared circle. Dark Hogan > NWO Hogan. Don't give Dark Hogan a sword when he's focused on meng.

Jim Ross leaving WCW, then leaving WWE as well. I came up on 1989-1994 WCW, to me it's the golden era of pro wrestling. The early 90s roster of wrestlers on WCW is tremendous, lots of highly talented guys who went on to have great careers; examples, Steve Austin, Sting and guys like Flyin Brian Pillman, who had an impactful career even though it was very short. He was a shooting star. Jim Ross' voice is the voice I hear in my head when I reminisce about that era. Jim on WWF sounded so out of place to me. Eventually this changed for me but it was a shock at first for sure! Same can be said for his departure from WWE, it was shocking to not hear him calling the matches anymore!

Bobby Heenan was one of a kind. I miss watching wwf back in the day.

I was at WCW Halloween Havoc 93 in New Orleans, LA when Mean Jean was introduced in WCW before even the pre-show went live. He made his official appearance the following month officially. The crowd went nuts!!! Then Bobby Heenan made his debut in Baton Rouge, LA at Clash of Champions in Feb 94.

"He's playing quarterback and I'm playing safety." These two positions are the furthest away from each other before the ball is snapped. It goes without saying because of all of the witty calls throughout ths years, but JR is just world class at improvising brilliant sentiments. Hes just awesome to listen to and every episode feels like it gets better

I sometimes just listen to old clips for fun and holy cow hearing Conrad say the line about Roman gave me like a flashback of 3 years “we’ll wait and see” Connie we saw brother!

Heenan was a genius 💯 Wrestling wise, management wise, knowledge wise, and definitely comedy wise he was second to none! I watched as much for heenen as 8 did the wrestling 💯 💗

Its cool what Vince did for Gene. Btw, i think Gene got to wcw before bobby did, cuz Okerland acted some type of way when Bobby came in.

Definitely… Bobby will always be WWF… he was the best and no one comes close… so many memories… hard to remember him in the WCW even though I watched all the time

I remember Heenan from the 1970's Bob Luce wrestling show on WFLD Chicago. He always mixed it up with the Crusher, Dick the Bruiser, Verne Gagne, the Sheik, the Legionnaires, and guys like the Baron von Raschke, Billy Superstar Graham, and Pepper Gomez.

Short of losing Hogan, the hole left by Heenan and Okerlund was felt for a long time because the people they put in to fill those voids were not up to task.

@tim simpson Individually I think of those four nobody was better than Bobby and JR, who had an immediate chemistry together for only working together for the several months in 1993 that they did. But as far as the teams go I think Jim and Jerry were better. Lawler was pretty much a cartoon on commentary during the "New Generation" days with Vince, but Ross brought out the Lawler who could talk people into the building back in his working days. Don't get me wrong, Bobby and Gorilla had their moments but I never thought Monsoon was a great announcer. Not terrible, but he needed guys like Heenan and Jesse Ventura to create some tension with.

Audio quality on this one is really low; there are pops, cracks, and snaps across the entire clip.

Bobby, King and Jesse were the best heel commentators ever! You believed, that they believed, the stuff they said. And many times they had valid points with the heel supporting arguments they would make. Classic, classic, classic stuff. Old school legends. Makes me sad to think this is a lost art

Heenan was in WCW well into 2000. I remember him hosting the last Thunder. He looked completely healthy and showed no signs of being sick. Can you imagine if he never left WWF. I wonder what it would have been like for him in the Attitude era with Rock and Austin. It could have happened.

Rofl classic Vince... he signed a contract, then 2 weeks later said, "ah, sorry pal I can only pay you half." He did the exact same thing with Bret Hart. Maybe I'm giving him too much credit, but imagine the genius of these moves if they were intentional. 1) Vince offers an employee millions and millions of dollars with no intentions on paying. 2) Vince tells the guy to go to WCW offering to defect. 3) The guy tells WCW "Well I'd leave, but you have to beat my WWF contract." 4) WCW is forced to pay the exorbitant salary, bleeding the company.

They influence everything you hear now you have to sing and be a model, so we won't be hearing songs from people like Bob Dylan or Neil Young. In the end people like Mr perfect or big Jhon stud,bam bam ,just a bunch got pass over, so people like wrestlers that they can relate to, be it a color attude looks area everything hulk stole that from everyone because of greed.

Bobby Heenan showing off the real World Heavyweight Championship on Wwf is iconic moment. Telling fans for weeks , months that real world heavyweight champion was coming to Wwf and it’s not Hogan and then Flair shows up on Wwf Tv then winning the Royal Rumble and the promo that Bobby Heenan, Mr Perfect and Rick Flair did after Royal Rumble was one of the greatest moments. We hate to be ones who told u so , But we told you so lmao. And then With a tear in my eye by Flair was great. Bobby Heenan is greatest manager of all time in wrestling and if Bobby was able have Podcast he would have biggest wrestling podcast hands down

These stories are great. It's interesting to hear about moments where Vince showed he had a heart when making sure Gene was taken care of financially. Wrestling aside for a moment, Bobby was so successful because he was smart. Imagine if he had been "college educated". He was one of the main reasons people tuned in to the WWF, let alone the talent. Vince should have taken better care of Bobby as well as Gene. JR is spot on about Lanza. His HOF acceptance speech was hard to watch.

Bobby didn't deserve how his last 5 or so years went in life.

Heenan left WWF to do commercials and in between family life. That all changed when WCW offered him an extravagant amount of money.

JR's voice was synonymous to me with big WWE events. I guess times can't help but to change, whether we like it or not.

What a great heel in wrestling yet a gentleman in life

People don't always realize, commentary is part of what makes great matches even better. Shelton Benjamin beating HHH on Raw felt like something major was happening partly because of JR calling the match

That was one of the driving factors that made many people jump ship to WCW. Those guaranteed contracts provided much needed financial stability.

Heenan is a national treasure.

I don't see how anyone can question Heenan's place as the #1 manager. There might even be an argument that he's the #1 character/ personality in the history of the business. It's a tight race with the Mr. McMahon character. I give it to Bobby. He was wrestling/ managing when Vince was focused in announcing.

I will always say that no commentating team will ever be as good as Bobby and Gorilla. My Mom and I always laughed at Bobby and Gorillas' antics/commentary. Banana phone, being chased by Winston/Matilda, etc... I am sure wrestling misses them both.

Hearing some names I've never encountered (which is most, don't get me wrong) is fun to research. Sam Muchnick's non-wrestling history is as wild as they come. Ukrainian Jewish boy finds himself in the USA, grows up to be drafted into the Army for WWII, then ends up a promoter in St Louis, MO of all places... What a life!

Bobby only actually had a few years as the top heel announcer in the wwf. Jesse Ventura had that role until he left in 1990. Bobby actually only did wwf pay per views from 91-93. Its interesting that wcw demoted Ventura when heenan arrived

Top heel managers make a ton of sense. They can help draw heat, and let the baby face get a bit of revenge here and there while protecting the heel wrestler.

To me Bobby was AWA first.

I gotta say with all due respect to the late bobby h, and gorilla monsoon! Jr and the king should go down as best commenting team in history!

My favorite Bobby memories were from WWF Primetime when him and Mr. Perfect would talk shit to McMahon and whoever the baby face guests were.

Bobby definitely was no ham and egger. I remember first seeing him when he was managing Nick Bockwinkel and Ray Stevens.

When I was a kid In the 90s I hated Heenan loved Hogan. When I got older and looked back I got the jokes Heenan was throwing at ya, and I knew he was the best thing wrestling ever had, I love to laugh.

He is the GOAT. Only Cornette can be uttered in the same breath.

I still like to think had Bobby stuck around Gorilla might of lived bit longer. Bobby , Bret both misused in WCW.

I think Bobby and Paul bearer were the best managers. While he was noticed alot, the mouth of the south wasn't at that level.

Absolutely. For some reason Bobby's wrestlers always seemed to be a legit threat for every title they were competing for. Paul Bearer/Percy Pringle had that huge mystique of only having or needing one wrestler. Jimmy Hart just seemingly took on everyone and maybe because HTM seemed so mid-card for life and a horrible fluke IC champion I never took him seriously as a manager.

Heenan stated he left the wwf because he was tired of it. He took the wcw position for the money and to be closer to his daughter who was in college.

It's hard for me to think of Bobby the Brain Heenan without thinking of Gorilla Monsoon or vice versa. And I can't think of those two together without hearing in my mind Gorilla telling the Brain "WILL YOU STOP IT?!?! lol
