Honestly, his drawing style baffles me. Not in a bad way. It is just so impressive how he basically starts out with one continuous line that winds and twirls around on the paper with seemingly no sense only for it to slowly but clearly become his intended picture. Sometimes I just wonder how some peoples brain works. It is genuinely impressive.

Think of it as sculpture. When he's drawing his starting lines it gives him the raw material, the base to sculpt. From there he can see in thoses lines: where to enphasize or reduce, etc. He 's correcting little by little until reaching what looks correct. I'm also baffled by drawers but more by those who don't use starting lines and seem to draw out of nothing, from memory like Kim Jung Ji without the need to correct (sculpt). It's really interesting to see that there are different ways to do the same things.

@@MrKLeBlanc Not really. If you really look at this drawing, in particular, you can see that it's more traditional than one might think. You can see the way he's blocking areas in, after starting with a general rough contour and creating planes as well as what is in perspective and what is flat.
@MrKLeBlanc

@@imaxdigital7052 I think i'm saying the same thing. His way of drawing is "traditional" or "classical", i'll even say "natural" in a sense. That is why i've used the sculpture analogy. (Starting with a general contour and "sculpting" in it the planes, perspective,etc.). What feels less traditional, to me at least, is drawers that draw like a "printer". It looks "surnatural" to me. Almost like they can project what they want to draw on the paper and then they just have to trace over the projection. I don't know if that make sense. They seem to don't need the rough starting lines at all. I mean a classical drawer sometimes don't use starting lines as well but you can see him correcting, adjusting, modifying (sculpting) as he's drawing but the drawers that draw like a printer don't seem to need correct anything and that is what baffles me.

I mean... u said so many stupid and wrong concepts in so few words that it IS GENUILY IMPRESSIVE.. Jim lines are all dirty, he doesnt have good pulse, he also just copies positions, that's the easiest thing ever, and his shadows and final work is HORRIBLE, at least compared to normal or great artists... so, delete ur comment cause it makes u look like the dumbest person in the world buddy :/

When Jim said"this is for you Stan" it broke my heart. Stan Lee was the pioneer and father of comics. He seemed really nice and genuine and always had a sense of humor. A national treasure. He got me into comics. He created a world that we can live in and see come to life. Jim Lee is my favorite artist and this tribute was a masterpiece. You can tell they were really close. R I.P. A Jim Lee Spidey!!! Amazing tribute to Stan Lee!!
It's inspirational how a great piece comes from seemingly just a bunch of initial scribbles.
Amazing. I’ve based about 90% of my drawing style on Jim’s work. He’s been one of my favorite artists since his work on X-Men in the 90’s.
“And this one...it’s for you, Stan.” It was at that moment that my heart broke...
Jim is one of my heroes when it comes to drawing. I use the same technique of sketching shapes then giving it more and more texture, but unlike Jim I use an eraser to remove excess pencil marks and mistakes. I dont have the courage to deep dive into it with pen and ink so quickly. It just speaks volumes of how insane his skills and confidence is that he deep dives into ink after a few pencil strokes!!! Wow, absolute wow!
Big fan of yours from the early 90’s. Became an X-men fan because of you.
I love that you construct these pieces from messy lines when you start.
Jim Lee is the goat.
The way he sketches is beautiful, truly a master of his craft. Him, Takehiko Inoue and Kim Jung Gi (may he rest in peace) are some of my idols and favorite artists. I learned a lot by watching them draw.
I like the anatomy of Jim Lee on his character drawings..
Jim is amazing. Wow wish I could meet him one day
I've seen a lot of comments saying Jim Lee finally drawing Spiderman , I draw both DC and marvel characters because I love the art work and the characters ,I don't care if they are DC or marvel. DC isn't the best and niether is marvel in my eyes they are both the best , the artwork is amazing ! Jim Lee YOU ARE AN AMAZING ARTIST ! I've learned so much from you , thank you .

Jim Lee, my favorite artist (especially love his work on Punisher War Journal) paying tribute to Stan "The Legend" Lee. Freaking Awesome!
Stan is not gone. He lives everyday with us through his characters and universes he created for Us.
How all that scribble became such a work of art, is mind-boggling. The power of the Human Brain and the talent of Jim Lee. Amazing…..pun intended.
Stan would have loved it. Jim Lee you're the best.
Stan Lee the "William Shakespeare" of our time. He entertained BILLIONS of people. He created a universe of thousands of characters of every size, color, ideology, religion! He was a creative genius who will be deeply missed by better than 1/4 of the world's population.
Awesome pic. He inspired me to use my imagination to create my own characters. Thanks Stan for making my child hood fun with comic books, cards, and action figures.
A confluence of idols. Seeing my hero tribute my other hero. I'm positive I'm not alone in being touched, heartbroken, and inspired watching this meditative process of a master. Stan was a pioneer of merging the playful and the philosophical. Jim is both gesturally fluid and exactingly precise. Perfectly complimentary. Always love these VZA videos, but this one is really special. Thanks!
I can't believe that I missed this. I'm ashamed with myself lol. I wish I was there to watch this live. RIP Stan Lee. Still can't believe you're gone. You will remain in our hearts.
Loved it. RIP Stan Lee
You know what's cool about this, this is what it was like to be at Homage Studios back in the mid 90s. Like a teenage J Scott Campbell is there, Whilce Portacio, and other artists, all hanging out and chatting while drawing. And the story was Jim was really open about explaining how to do this or that, as guys would help out by inking out the blacks space that needed to be filled in. And back then you'd read the comics "finishes" or "Break downs by."
Still miss the guy (Mr. Stan Lee) -feels like yesterday that I heard of his passing. You were and always will be one of my favorite artists (if not most fav) and your empathy speaks kindly of you. Am quite certain that Stan appreciates your consideration thus do I -you take care and best wishes to you and yours in all things possible.
Stan’s gift was inspiring the likes of you Jim to provide us with amazing art and stories and most importantly to carry Stan’s torch for future artist

The Bob Ross of comics... like for real, I have fallen asleep to his sketching multiple times...XD
I like those thin blurry lines for the muscle volume. It's like a throwback to the origin of comics and masters like Hal Foster and Alex Raymond. Back in the day I didn't as I loved how Jim deep strong line style was like looing at the future. But now that I've learned to appreciate all art I'm glad they're here since those were kind of the norm back in the 40s when Stan started.
Jim, you monster! Thank you for all the inspiration, sharing and knowledge!
It's fascinating how he draws, like, the "cloud approximation" of what he wan't to draw with the pencil, and then pens it what he what's to see as a final picture.
In honor of Stan Lee!! We thank you for all of the joy and creativity you brought to the world🙏🏼

Awesome Drawing. Great Job Mr. Jim Lee. 😎👍💜💚❤💛💙
It's so subtle that it seems silly, but the speed and precision with which he lines in the webbing on Spidey's suit from 13:23 ish to around 16 minutes is when the mastery of the medium is fully apparent. He suggests size, perspective, and contours very quickly and correctly over a very complex shape of a human upper body. AND he does it quickly. The arms are wonderfully expressed. The fingers are amazing. Such a joy to watch.
