That hayfield was thick with a good growth. Just listen to those knives chattering. My grandfather told me back in the fifties; "Chattering knives, thick hay."

I grew up in the 1960's on a country road just like this one, a bit closer to Syracuse than where you are, but still totally rural, and still very rural to this day. I remember the very rare car going by ... safe for my brother and me as kids to ride bikes around in the road all afternoon, throw balls, have high-bounce contests with Super Balls, have foot races, work Tonka toy excavators in the ballast alongside the roadway thinking we were building a new road section. We even had neighbors haying in the summer, but with tractors - no horses, unfortunately. That all seems like 1,000 years ago now! Great video today.

In the 1930's my mom said her dad would hitch up the sleigh and drive to a group of cedars beside the house. Then, very quietly, he wouldclimb down and sneak her on board, tell the team to walk on and he would be out of their sight behind the cedars. Mom said this would work for a while but they would figure out it wasn't her dad driving and things would slow down considerably! Loved these old stories.

This is the time of year farmers 👩‍🌾 and their horses🐴 get to work from sun ☀️ up to sun ☀️ down.We always said on our farm making hay this late in the year was like making two crops in one. The many rains you have had has made hay making tough. Thanks.

Love this video. These kids will remember these moments for the rest of their lives. Better than any summer camp you spend money on. I remember doing stuff like this with my grandfather 57 years ago. That is a beautiful huge field you were working in. You are one hell of a dude at your age to be able to spend 6 hours out there like that. And I am sure that wasn’t the only thing you did that day. I know if I tried to do that now …… you would hear me snoring all the way in the woods the next day. You are not only making hay Jim, you are making history every day.

@@WorkingHorsesWithJim They are good memories Jim ………. Except when I was using a hay fork like a spear………. Sent it right through my foot. My grandfather who was in his late 70’s at the time carried me in his arms all the way to the house. Of course my grandmother yelled at him “what did you do to the poor child”. This was at a time in Ireland that people of that age would never think of running with you to a doctor or hospital. Granny disinfected my wound and bandaged my foot. Of course I milked the attention for a few days and never used a hay fork like that again 😀 I was only 5 years old

Thank you for showing me what you do. Via the flip camera. I grew up on a farm, way back when we used horses for everything. I am 86 years old but my memory is as sharp as a tack. Listening to the sound of the machinery is what I haven't heard for years. And seeing how you work your horses and the care you show them is beautiful. I can almost smell the fresh-cut hay. Almost. And Oh the stories I could tell you, most of them are funny and some not so funny. Life back then was hard but very rewarding. There wasn't a lot of time to get into trouble.

Horses do know who has the reins! Ha! I always put down a lot of hay when I was getting company!! I remember a few times there was no dew, and we put hay in all day, all night, and all the next day!! 2 of us would stop at night to milk, and same in the morning- the rest kept wagons & trucks unloaded! I lost a boyhood friend last week. He studied at Canton and went on to Cornell to become a veterinarian. He started his big animal practice as a partner with a private vet in Lowville. He then followed his passion to teach and became an instructor at SUNY Canton, eventually being named as the dean of Veterinary Sciences and later as the acting Vice President of SUNY Canton. He went on to become President of a College in Ogdensburg, NY. Doc moved on to become a professor of Veterinary Science at SUNY Delhi all the while maintaining his veterinary practice. He will be missed. Your apprentice couldn't choose a better profession, especially if she chooses to treat large animals.

I have a cousin who grew up around large animals who started volunteering with their Vet when she was like 11 or 12 and she's now studying at NC State School of Veterinary Medicine. You all are wonderful for doing that! Yup, everyone has to remember that horses have their own personalities and think for themselves too... it's funny to see their little quirks and to build relationships with them.

What a gratifying video. Hay put up & seeing the faces of all the young people driving & riding. Great job. I’ve had to use my full body fly nets on the horses this year more than in the past few years. All types of flies are terrible.

The weather is a fickle thing. I did some painting yesterday and today it rained. All is well so far. I remember as a kid when we had to get the hay put up it was always a guessing game! Good that the girls are learning about the farm life and how hard it is. More people need to learn where the food comes from and how much work goes into producing it. Well done Jim and Brenda!

Jim, i enjoy seeing your horses work but those larger fields are hard for your older horses and threat of rain. have you thought about mowing and raking and baling with your tractor ?

Always like to see lots of hay for the 'critters" . Really enjoyed seeing the youngsters learning, they pick things up so quickly. Black flies are awful, but, must imagine the 'squeeters were bad too, when you worked late. They're eating us up in the middle of the day, here on the shore of Lake Michigan.

You need to invest in some horse fly veils, or you can make em yourself on cold winter days, here in Australia flies are a constant issue and horses soon learn to appreciate the veils. Keep smiling :-)
