A bigger Macho Man question for me is why did the WWF use him as a commentator when he was still over and they were seriously lacking talent.

Vince felt that guys like Randy were past their prime and had decided it was time for him to move on and create new superstars. It was one of the reasons why Hogan left and eventually became one of the reasons why Randy left. It was talked about it briefly during the episode they did on him for dark side of ring.

Yeah i was always pissed Macho didn't get that 3rd WWF title win at a time when he easily could've had one. Randy was still over in the early 90's Vince can't ever use that age thing cos thats utter horsecrap. Hogan returned in the early 2000's and was a WWE Champion again wasn't he? By beating Triple H (shrugs).

They were going with younger guys. The "New Generation". That's why Shawn took on Bret at Survivor Series '92 for the WWF title. It's why Bret won the title a month before that. Savage proposed a two-year feud with HBK, with HBK going over in the end, but it was nixed by Vince. Savage didn't want to commentate (and he was right), so he left.

WWE and Savage were on speaking terms again at the time of his death. He worked a couple of promos for the game, and looked like he was set to make a TV appearance. It was very reminiscent of what happened with Warrior in 2014. Unfortunately Randy passed away just weeks after recording the promos. As for the Stephanie rumours - the earliest trace of these can be found on the Death Valley Driver forums, around the early 2000s, in a forum thread that was basically a game where people were challenged to come up with the most ridiculous rumours they could think of. One person suggested Steph and Mach got it on in 94, and that's why he left the company in a hurry and never came back. There is no earlier trace of these rumours that can be found anywhere on the internet, in newsgroups (which were huge in the 90s and early 2000s), the dirt sheets, forums, or anywhere. The fact that all other "sources" (if they can be called that) date from after that joke post on the DVD forums suggests that it's likely a joke that's gotten way out of hand.

His brother Lanny Poffo went into detail about this in an interview (from Kayfabecommentaries) a few years back. He claimed that bad blood between Randy Savage and Vince McMahon had started in the late 80s when Savage asked McMahon to have his father Angelo Poffo (also a wrestler) to participate in an upcoming legends battle royal at a house show they were having at the time. According to Lanny, Angelo really wanted to be in that battle royal. To be in the ring together one last time with all his friends from back then, some of which he haven't seen in years. So he asked his son Randy if he could get him on this battle royal. Vince declined. Lanny explained that from that day forward Randy had a chip on his shoulder and he never forgot about Vince not granting him this simple wish. Lanny said there weren't a lot of days after that where Randy wouldn't mention it. Even decades later Randy would bring this up. Another contributing factor according to Lanny was, around 1994, Randy Savage was pitching McMahon an elaborate idea for a big 2-year feud against Shawn Michaels. Supposedly McMahon said to Savage they were having a youth movement at the time and Randy was too old and the best thing he could do was staying on the commentary desk. He left for WCW shortly after this. And he took his sponsor SlimJim with him. Lanny was also asked about the Stephanie rumors, but could not confirm any of it. People would have to ask Stephanie herself, he said. tl/dr - Savage never returned because he never forgave McMahon for not putting his father into a legends battle royal and also got put on the commentary desk against his will - McMahon never had Savage return, because he never forgave Savage for taking his sponsor SlimJim with him when he left WWF. You should check the interview out. Google kayfabefcommentaries to find their site. They also did many releases with Jim Cornette which are hilarious :) (edited for typos)

I've been watching some of the 1994 Raw's recently, where Randy "Macho Man" Savage was the colour commentator, and it really looked and sounded like he loved working with Randy on the mic. People commenting are saying VM cried that Randy was leaving. Its possible that Randy didnt give enough of a notice but what gets me is that it reminds me of Cm Punk when he said VM cried when he left. Vince doesnt know or he doesnt separate friendship from money and he seems detached at times from those he easily claims are his 'friends' and yet throughout the days leading to these stars leaving you can tell that Vince was overusing them and forgetting the so called 'friendship' terms. 'Friends' my ass, Vince is detached in reality and this dumb nut is too old to learn what treating someone like a friend is really like. Its said really that this old fart hasnt learned enough in life to truly be like the movie character Jerry Maguire- a true figure of compassion, ethics and human treatment towards others. I just hope this man (Vince) didnt ruin his 'close friend' R-truth in any ways. Sad really if he did.

I never knew that commercial existed. I just went to watch it, and I can almost guarantee you that he would have signed a WWE Legends contract to make some appearances if he hadn't done so already. And he'd definitely be more entertaining on commentary than the current clowns they have trying their best at "storytelling". While we're at it, imagine how much more entertianing the Michael Cole heel gimmick would have been against Randy Savage instead of Jerry Lawler. You'd have way better promos, and Randy could have just kicked the crap out of Swagger and then crushed Cole like a soda can in their match at Wrestlemania (if it weren't for his heart problem).

Knowing how close the Poffo Family is, I suspect Randy never forgave Vince for not allowing his father to enter the Battle Royal. I don't think the WWF asked Randy if he ever wanted to come back because they knew he didn't. I can imagine Savage being highly offended over McMahon not granting this request. I think the graphics showing his bald spot would have upset him as well. Most of us would say, those perceived slights weren't worth the money he lost, but Randy Savage was one of a kind. By most accounts, he saved his money well and wasn't hurting. There was some contact before he passed and he was under a legends contract (I think)....time does heal all wounds.

People who think it was Steph...seriously if Savage was with Vince's underage daughter don't you think things would've been more serious for Savage like jail? Vince took out a full page ad in I believe Time Magazine when Randy died to offer his condolences. Savage was back in the good graces of the WWE near the end. Savage is now in the HOF. Savage for years turned down the HOF unless Vince put his father and Lanny in the HOF. After he died, Lanny went against his wishes and I assume a ton of money was thrown his way.

It’s pretty obvious from watching numerous interviews and his documentary, he didn’t want to go back. He didn’t like that Vince thought of him as old and wouldn’t let him wrestle. And then when he went to WCW they made fun of his bald spot and that was a really sensitive topic for him.

I would say they were on their way to reconciling. Compare how, a couple years after Randy's death, Warrior appeared in WWE 2K14 and his deal at that time was with 2K, not WWE. A year later he was inducted into the Hall of Fame, reconciled with Vince, etc. In 2010 or 2011, Randy made a deal with Mattel to have figures made. Had he lived, I have to assume he would have eventually done the HOF (Vince was at least willing to sign off on a Macho Man figure, which was progress). And if not (due to his insistence on his father's inclusion as a requirement), he at least would have appeared in some other context. It's bittersweet to imagine him as the big surprise on a Legends/Reunion episode of Raw, or even just sitting down with Steamboat to do a KZread/commentary video of their WrestleMania III match. Actually it just hurts. Also, it's important to note that WWE DID reach out to Randy, and he declined the HOF more than once-insisting that his dad would have to be inducted, too (as I mentioned above). So this may have more to do with Vince's change of approach (over the years) in dealing with estranged former wrestlers, and the bad timing of Randy's death, than Randy having committed the unforgivable. All that said, I'm just as curious as anyone else to know if "it" happened...
