Something's wrong with George's medulla oblongata obviously.
Daddy Said Sell is my favorite story Jim has ever told
Had a bad day. Looked this up as soon as I was able and I feel so much better. One of the greatest stories of all time.
Every time I hear that story I'm reminded of Junior from Smokey and the Bandit.

I just watched a clip of a shoot interview where Ricky Morton said that Harley Race made it look like George Gulas was going to win that match.
@RayNDeere

Supposedly, Nick gave Harley an extra $750 to make George look good, then deducted it from the cut that went to the NWA for the promotional fee.
Nick was as blind as Leroy McGuirk not to see how bad George was. A father's love I guess.

You don't have to agree with Cornette on his idea of what wresting should be, but appreciate it when he tells stories about the business thru his experiences. He's seen it all, done it all and been almost everywhere. He's a great person to listen to

@@victor.elkins I completely agree with his idea of what wrestling should be. Also, I have a sneaking suspicion that the overwhelming majority of people (over the age of about 28) with a history of watching wrestling ALSO agree with him. Their are a LOT of very Vocal loudmouths on Twitter & other Social Media who try to drown out the Majority (also happens media, politics, entertainment, academia) in order to usher in some new weird ideology of sorts. Those same morons will call that "just a conspiracy theory" LoLz!! They make it out to be "The old vs The New" but like I said, I think it's "The Overwhelming Majority vs The Fringe Minority" They are just a fringe.

I am so convinced George Gulas was on the spectrum and was just high functioning. I feel like it would explain literally all of these stories lol
Here's what I've always wondered: Did George really want to be a wrestler, or was he pressured by his father? I'm going on a limb and guess that George got into the biz just so he could please Nick. I could be wrong.

Some Versions of the Story Say George Wanted to Wrestle, But Nick Didn't Want Him to (Kinda Like Vince Sr. Not Wanting Vince Jr. to Wrestle) ... But, George Convinced Nick to Let Him
My step-dad used to cut George's grass. Daddy says mow!
He threw chops because Tojo Yamamoto trained him, so he used chops.
This is a good story here worth going back to time to time.
Hal Needham must have based Junior Justice after George Gulas LMAO 😂😂😂
Brian having a good time with this one 🤣🤣🤣
Now i know how wrestling died in Chattanooga. I remember channel 12 had a local show and my mother said my uncle watched it in the 60s. I have just started watching wrestling (only the old shows). It is so fascinating with these podcasts.
@thomasswafford250

There were several factors. Nick was cheap and could only for the most part get people starting out or finishing up. Plus, Georgia Championship Wrestling was coming to Chattanooga. Jarrett and Lawyer walked off with so much of his talent. Nick had pissed off so many people. Jarrett and Lawyer were actually an outlaw promotion, but the NWA still supported them because of Nick's antics. He dug his own grave.
Nick didn't want George to become a wrestler, he just couldn't tell George no.
I would've PISSED myself laughing in the ring
“It’s George!”
To my knowledge, Robert Fuller is the only wrestler who actually liked working for Nic Gulas

I love this story.
When Jeff Jarrett became a wrestler, Jerry Jarrett sent him to other territories that he didn't book or promote for this exact reason. He wanted Jeff to succeed and make it on his own without him. This guy.....hell when his father Nick retired, George had to as well because NO promoter wanted him.

Imagine Georgy as Giant Gonzalez
George Gulas is kind of like Junior from Smokey and the Bandit with Jackie Gleason and Burt Reynolds
The only question of mine that was actually asked :)
If Nick had made George work his way up (jobber and foward), he could've been a great wrestler. Height and skinny aren't always detriments, to being wrestlers. Ron Fuller, Jimmy Golden and Dustin Rhodes are examples of lanky wrestlers, who made good. Unlike George, despite their family connections, they started as jobbers.
@piperar2014

I agree, and I'd add that he should have been sent to some other territory to job. But if he couldn't travel between towns without calling daddy, that wasn't going to happen.

When football coach Mike Shanahan's son Kyle was done playing college ball and was choosing between the NFL draft or going right into coaching, Mike said something like: Son, enter the draft if you want to. But as a player, they are always going to be trying to replace you, and the best you can hope for is to be just good enough that they can't. That's how a father should be realistic about the talent level and career prospect of their child.* I agree with those who say George should have been a jobber. I'll add that he should have been sent to someone else's promotion to job. Son, stay home and referee or hit the road to job. *Always trying to replace you is almost every coach and player in the NFL outside of Bret Farve and Tom Brady. I

I don't remember what season the Brett Favre Retirement Drama started. But prior to the start of the 2008 season, Favre informed the Packers he would retire. Packers spent training camp preparing for a season with Rodgers. Then Favre changed his mind and told the Packers he wanted to come back. The Packers were committed to moving forward with Rodgers and traded Favre to the Jets. After leading the Vikings to the NFC championship in 2009, the 2010 version of Favre was a complete shitshow. Prior to the 2010 season, Jared Allen asked Favre to stay retired. Favre chose to retire for real after 2010. The Vikings would have taken him back in 2011, 2012, 2013....

The only other territory that George wrestled for was the Sheik's and Sheik's son Captain Ed George only wrestled for his dad and Nick Gulas
I always wonder why fathers put their sons in these positions knowing they had no chance to succeed. Even if Gulas was a prodigy simply being who he was would be an issue by being in the main event so quickly in your fathers promotion. It seems like if a father wanted their son to have any chance to succeed youd send him to another territory with a promoter that you trust to let him develop outside of your promotion. And after he’s spent some time elsewhere developing and paying his dues, if he shows the ability to be in a top role; then you could bring him back for it and maybe not have it be a big issue since he would have a track record of success away from his father. You’d probably still have some pushback no matter what but at least then it wouldn’t be such blatant nepotism. Really is wild how some really successful territoru promoters let their sons tank their territory by forcing them to a position they weren’t deserving to be in even when their fans hated it.
George's story would make an excellent comedy
George was what they used to call a Tall Drink o' Water but he couldn't work worth shit. Even Harley, who could wrestle a mop and make the mop look like a champion wrestler, couldn't work with him

Wow, this makes George sound simple minded, was he I wonder?
Didnt JJ pull the same shit with Lawler?
Lmao Gosh damn 😂😂😂😂
Why does George look like Andy Kaufman?
5:08 LOL
Sounds like waterboy
George Gulas looks like he has the size, Jerry Jarret looks out of place.
I was at that match in Nashville between Gulas and Race. The fans didn't turn against Gulas, Race made Gulas look as if he was going to win. Yes Gulas was not very good and was not main event material.
This is like a.. proto-“Eugene” character. Except real.

True. The best Greg ever got was a push with the tag belts until Jim Brunzell took off for the WWF. Greg had some mid-card feuds, but he wasn't pushed by Verne the way other promoter fathers did their sons.
@geocoop60

@@actionsub 1. Because Verne knew that Greg wasn't as good as he was & 2. even though he was the majority owner in the AWA the promoters that ran the various cities that he promoted in, Joe Dusek in Omaha being 1 of them, wouldn't have used him in their main events even if he was the champ

George was simply misunderstood

George is a basketball referee now and is terrible. He drives a car with a license plate that say “Spyder Man”
George Gulas. I never heard of him. A lot of wrestling fans in Memphis were familiar with him in the 1970s and 80s. It seems he was to pro wrestling what Ed Wood was to movies he made in the 1950s. They both flopped badly at their professions. A book in 1980 called The Golden Turkey Awards picked Ed Wood as THE All Time Worst Director. Will there be a pro wrestling book that will pick George Gulas as the sport's all time worst wrestler?
