Jim Carroll sings about a proposed collapse of the privileged white class economy. Some people were spoiled rotten at that point and I think it pissed him off how soft and consumer crazed they were. Obviously he singing about some spoiled woman he knew. Unfortunately, the only luxury brands that have fizzled out in the last few years were the ones favored by the middle class, think Victoria's Secret, Starbucks, Gap, Banana Republic. etc. . High end luxury brands for the rich are still very much in vogue with no end to the desire for their cache. . The Louis Vitton's, Chanel's, Mercedes and the like. Still I find that this song has such vast relevance these days.
