    An underrated joke in this to me is Desmond referring to the Minister's trip to the farm as a "jolly good wheeze." Shows that nobody took it particularly seriously

    The funniest thing is that this is certainly not something the financial times would report, especially back then. That's a reference to a scene where he says he never reads the financial times 😂

    @@thomasb.5643 I think it is somewhere in this episode that Sir Desmond tells Sir Humphrey that he never reads the FT, just carries it under his arm as part of the 'uniform'. That's the reason for the look to Sir Humphrey who almost certainly cooked up this situation in order to get Sir Desmond the extra floors on his building depite Hacker having stated that high rise skyscrapers were no longer to be allowed, or some such.

    The only criticism of brilliant Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister I can think of, apart from not having more episodes/seasons of course, is that the makers didn’t give much airtime to this breathtakingly idiot Sir Desmond Glazebrook.

    Ministers come and go but civil servants are for long run. They need to be kept happy. I bet out of 4 bafta atleast one was given out of some inner agenda

    @@johnking5174 Hardly. Paul Eddington is by far the better actor in Yes Minister and Yes PM. Sir Nigel Hawthorne is a brilliant actor yes, but he is better in his other roles. The BAFTA award is just not a good judge, nor are any of the half a million other such awards

    @@perperson199 I think it really had more to do with the part itself. Sir Humphrey got the best lines and moments of the show, and Hawthorne was ideal in the role. Eddington, who probably was a more subtle actor had the harder job but it was also far less flashy and organizations are drawn to flashy performances. Even Hawthorne said that Eddington should have won at least half the awards and I think most fans of the show would agree with that.

    Yep. I was in the military. When I was gate duty a woman never had the proper Identification so I told her very respectfully that I can’t let her in (I worked on an establishment that housed the UK’s Nuclear Submarines). She then went mental at me telling me that her husband is a lieutenant commander and that I will pay for this. It was pissing down with rain so i told her that she can either stand inside in the warm and wait for me to help her get clearance or she can stand outside in the pissing rain all night 🤣

    In fact, a lot of what's covered in the series (like the new hospital that had loads of administrators but no medical staff or patients, or the "emergency communications room" actually happened!)

    Nah, they were never truly held to account (in a strict and consistent way at least). It's just more obvious these days. Back in _ye olden days_ our dear leaders just didn't have as many eyes & ears on them or as many mouths yapping at them. Perhaps it's the case that because of that increased scrutiny the ones with something resembling shame left and the ones we have left are the most shameless drama queens. (Not being specific to any one country here.)
