Jiří Kylián's PETITE MORT

Ойын-сауық

Visual surprises abound in this tantalizing contemporary ballet, which blends a classical sensibility with a bold, modern wit. The choreography includes six men, six women, and six fencing foils. The foils are, in many ways, the men's real dancing partners and sometimes turn out to be more stubborn and willful than a human partner. Kylián also makes playful use of black baroque dresses, which seem to exist both separately from the dancers and molded to their bodies.

No. No, no, no, no, no. Petite Mort still needs a LOT of work by Alvin Ailey to look good. They look heavy and uncomfortable in this choreography, not elegant. Their bodies don't "breathe" Kylián's movement. It just looks awkward. Going back to watch NDT dance it.

33cows I don't think any amount of work will make Alvin Ailey look good, ESPECIALLY with something as monumental and powerful as this piece.

Aleksander Subotic I disagree. Hard work always pays off in the end. Plus, they already look good in some elements, just not overall.

+33cows Think you might have a problem with the power and shape of their bodies. Understandable, if you think skinny is superior, but you can't be taken seriously if you say this is just wholesale not graceful.

+33cows Just watched NDT and it looks stiff and rushed to me, robotic and not at all sensual. Different strokes I guess...

+Aleksander Subotic I strongly disagree with your statement. Ailey's interpretations are extremely creative and always push the bar. Moves are not to be predictable--rather unexpected. His company's ballets include the viewer's perspective to experience an intelligent and engaging performance. His works exhibit the many facets of dance and are artistic--after all, it is Alvin Ailey American Dance THEATER.
