You can pull the red tip off of the mode switch to make it easy to disassemble and re assemble. It pops right back on.

Also worth pointing out this PCB would still be hard to remove with the pot/footswitch interference! If the footswitch was on it's own little PCB like the KTR that would solve the issue.

JHS is emulating a small circuit that was in those Tone Bender pedals. It would be expected that there's not much to them.

Happily unloaded two JHS Legends of Fuzz via Reverb to new homes. They were fun pedals, but easy to let go, and move on from. Kinda uni-dimensional and didn't have a classic fuzz tone -- they were more in the modern distortion camp. Amazing to see inside these units... thanks Gray Bench!

I have a JHS Supreme, for anyone wanting to open their JHS Legneds of Fuzz, be very careful with the ribbon cable, I broke the joints holding it to the main board and had to resolder it.

Just came to this video right after watching your breakdown of the Warm Audio Warm Bender. Omg what a difference. I’d definitely take the Warm Audio over this ridiculous nano-circuit thing.

I had to scrape off paint in my Smiley version of this. It was extremly noisy because of poor grounding. Bring on some more AionFX stuff! Great kits.

John Cusack of Cusack music does all the jhs boards he has machines that populate and solder em. Watch the Cusack music production walk thru. It might change your mind on pedal brands.

Components to board size ratio pretty extreme there! Pedals like this always make me think about the cost of pedals which is so much more than similar components built into something more utilitarian like a torch. I get that cost and price are not the same thing, and I guess the JHS brand is about ensuring they're not but I doubt there was much soldering done by JHS in that pedal. Makes you wonder how far companies can push towards mass production before losing the boutique or niche aspect of their brand.

he is a rich fat cat making money off of chinese cookie cutter garbage ,, he is not in the shop making pedals one at a time BY HAND like me .. i am not a fan of jhs pedals at all as you can tell .. he floods the market with garbage while sitting in his mansion compound

The circuit board is quite big relative to the number of parts. I wonder if they could save a few $ with a smaller board.

Not really, the cost is in the print layout, odds are the boards are a standard size for all of their LoF pedals, going smaller would mean less bulk purchase prices

Great vid. Question... what mod could be done to widen the tone control frequency? If possible of course. I know almost nothing about electronics

@@shanemichaelneal648 You have to ask the fans why. I've never been a fan of JHS, and I'm not saying that to badmouth them, but because I've had a lot of JHS pedals and they've all gone. There's no one type of JHS pedal that's the best in its category. There's always a better brand! That's the truth.

mode switch is probably 470 ohm to 1k just like on a fuzz face it up volume and fullness

Which transistor do they use?

I'm assuming it's assembled by soldering the potentiometers and mode switch inside the case? Both they and the ribbon cable look hand-soldered, while the foot switch is clearly wave soldered.

My assumption is at least the footswitch is soldered after installing the PCB. The mode switch might be presoldered since the red tip can be removed (someone corrected me on this after the video).

The more I try to give a chace to JHS pedals the more I think “I never have a good one JHS”… overpriced too…. i really prefer some chinesse ones… mmm…

I tried 4 different ones and all I ever got was unusable noise, a high pitched squeal when I rolled my volume down, anyone else have that problem? and I wanted it to work so bad, I was bummed, I'll try British Pedal Company...

Its an unbiased superbolt, so they changed a trimpot/ resistor value. I would be more curious to see a superbolt and have him figure out what the actual components are that JHS can no longer get which is their reasoning for discontinuing the pedal

I’ll be kind and simply say I’m not a fan of this design or lack of.

I hate that they're based here in KC. Not what I'd like to be known for. Thank you for doing this for us, never the less.

Am i the only one thinking it's kinda big and overpriced for this kind of manufacturing? I understand going all SMD Components but think it should reflect in the Pricepoint. I mean what will the Components of this Pedal cost? 15-25$?

It's not like someone built this in their garage or something. Components are only a small percentage of what you're paying for with any major brand. R&D, graphic design, insurance, and all other overhead...like I doubt those enclosures are off the shelf, they're probably custom design and manufacture, and that costs money. So many things go into designing and mass-producing a pedal like this, their profit might only be a small fraction of the cost

@@Crodon Hate to feel like I'm trying too hard to go to bat for JHS here, but they're pretty up front about the nature of both his own pedals and pedals in general, and regularly touts the benefits of just buying a cheap chinese-made pedal if all you need is the tone. In addition, he's on record saying that he believes SMD components are superior to Through Hole components, and if you're going to do an SMD vintage fuzz, it's just gonna look like that.

@@Mebibit "SMD components are superior to Through Hole components" -- pretty sure he means that from a manufacturing perspective only. SMD is way less work, more consistent, cheaper. I don't think he considers either type superior in terms of sound

Well, remember that today's electronics were build by fancy robot to maintain efficiencies. And as far as I know that those fancy machine/robots requires minimum material specification so the machine/robot able to do the work properly, such as minimum board area that can be executed, even though the circuit itself only containing simple 1 transistor booster like EHX LPB-1 style circuit. If I were Josh Scott, i would design super compact board as small as possible (probably 3x3cm) then use hot plate as soldering reflow platform, and do all the assembly manually, BUT if I need to build 10K units then the Electricity Bills would be absolute nightmare.

Wow what a turd. Everyone should make their own tonebender, its like 7 parts and you learn something. Even if you buy fancy NOS components it'll cost under $25 for the parts. The enclosure is the biggest cost I'd imagine
