Jhoola in Mishra Gaara | Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande | Music of India

#khayal #ashwini #indianclassicalvocal
‘Jhoola’ literally means a swing. Traditionally, a jhoola is a seasonal folk song from some parts of northern India that is connected to the monsoons. It is a lilting, lighter composition that has been incorporated into the Hindustani classical repertoire. A jhoola’s lyrics are replete with sensuous depictions of the romance between Lord Krishna, the flute-playing Hindu God and his consort Radha in a jhoola (swing-rope) which has been tied across the branches of a kadamb or burflower tree that blooms during the monsoons in India.

Learn more about the musician:
Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande gives a brilliant presentation of this lighter piece elaborating Raag Gaara along with hues of other ragas. After a graceful and evocative exploration of the melodic lines, she introduces the “lagghi”, a short rhythmic intensification towards the end that is reminiscent of a dancer’s footwork. Vinod Lele accompanies well and synchs perfectly with the lagghi, taking the song to an exciting space. Vinay Mishra’s sprightly accompaniment on the harmonium is heart-warming.
Monsoons are the harbinger of life in agricultural India. The intense monsoon downpours satiate the parched soil and soul and make for an obvious association with feelings of longing and romantic love. Many folk repertoires and lyrics have been inspired from this romantic association with the monsoons from time immemorial.
Musicians
Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande (khayal)
Vinod Lele (tabla)
Vinay Mishra (harmonium)
Gunwant Dhadyalla & Seetal Dhadyalla (tanpuras)

Just wanna ask. When harmoniums are used in concerts along with tanpura, are they tuned to just intonation or any shruti based tuning? Or simply they are equal temperament tuning?

Beautiful music and thanks to you Darbar for bringing us all of that . No offence but the usage of the word 'sensous' is not so apt in describing the divinity of lord krishna and goddess Radha. A human mind cannot understand or perceive the purity of divine relationships and hence tries to bring it to its own levels. 🙏
