About the Fort:
Jhansi Fort or Jhansi ka Kila is known to be a fort located on a large hilltop known as Bangira, in Uttar Pradesh. It used to serve as a stronghold of the Chandela Kings in the area called Balwant Nagar (Jhansi's old name) from 11th century to 17th century.
Jhansi Fort History:
The construction of this Jhansi fort was done by Bundela Rajput chief and the ruler of the Orchha Kingdom, Veer Singh Deo Bundela in the year 1613. It is known to be one of the strongholds of the Bundelas. In the year 1728, Mohammed Khan Bangash attacked Maharaja Chattrasal. Peshwa Bajirao actually helped Maharaja Chattrasal for defeating the Mughal army. To serve gratitude, Maharaja Chattrasal gave a part of his state, which also included Jhansi, to Peshwa Bajirao. In the year 1742 Naroshanker was made Jhansi's subedar. During his complete tenure of 15 years, not only he extended the Jhansi fort (the extension was known as Shankergarh), but also made a few other buildings. In the year 1757, after Naroshanker was asked to return by the Peshwa. Madhav Govind Kakirde and then Babulal Kanahai were known to be made the subedars of Jhansi. From the year 1766 to 1769 Vishwas Rao Laxman served as Jhansi's subedar. Then Raghunath Rao (II) Newalkar was known to be appointed Jhansi's. He was known to be a very able administrator, who increased the revenue of the state as well as building both MahaLakshmi Temple and the Raghunath Temple.
Jhansi Fort Structure:
The Jhansi fort stands in the hilly area shows the way North Indian style of fort construction is different from that of the South Indian style. In the South India, most of the forts were known to be built on the sea beds such as the Bekal Fort of Kerala. The granite walls of the Jhansi fort are almost 16 and 20 feet thick and on the south side of the fort, the city walls meet. The south face of the Jhansi fort is almost perpendicular. There are a total of 10 gates which gives access to the fort. These are namely Khanderao Gate, Datia Gate, Bhanderi Gate(maharani laxmi bai actually escaped from this gate in the battle of 1857), Unnao Gate, BadaGaon Gate, Laxmi Gate, Sagar Gate, Orchha Gate, Saiyar Gate and Chand Gate. Notable sights in the Jhansi fort are the Shiva temple, and Ganesh temple at the entrance, and also the Kadak Bijli cannon which was used in the uprising of 1857.
The fort is known to extend to a huge 15 acres of land and complete structure measures about 312m in length and 225m in width. Overall, there are a total of twenty-two supports with a mammoth strengthening wall which is surrounded by a moat on both the sides. The shattered upholder over the eastern side of the fort was rebuilt by the British, who also added one floor to the Panch Mahal.

The Jhansi fort is situated in the middle of Jhansi city at a distance of 3 km from the Jhansi Railway station. The nearest airport to Jhansi Fort is Gwalior, which is about 103 km. You can also reach the fort by getting down at the Jhansi Museum Bus Stop.
