    Sounds like you might need a cover noise in the background, if you can't figure out a way to filter it. I couldn't hear it, but I've worked around heavy machinery and trucks for too long.

    Hello Max, from Washington State, US. I am having the most fun watching your very nice work to various machine components and I must tell you of the recent posts, I am trying very hard to seek the simplicity of your prize winning tools. As I designed and ground my own tool post. Which while has flaws in operation, it meets real need and where I can manage fair precision. I have understood so much more of the gib need for well balanced tool movement by your lessons. Thank you. Just at the moment I am at task on a 7.5 meter boat with dual pontoon design, as a refit and weldment with refinish to surfaces. And a modest shop design as compressed air supply, tool holders and drawers as end use requires. So, where your design notes were of particular interest. And I am rather cheering your progress from half a world away. As for tool end use, I chanced to repair a "Miller" microcrometer as a vintage tool, where the dial had broken free of the gage center. Where you see, Max, I am very keen to simply try for the precision I so admire in your work and the best lessons as to machine. I so enjoy your posts. And I quite thank you for the instruction to difficult and technical repair. My personal regards. McGary

    Great to see these JFMT lathe vids back up and going. I was hanging out for those 8 months waiting to see you get back into it. But look at how much you have achieved in that time. 👍 Couldn’t hear that fan noise at all. Don’t think it will be much of an issue hopefully. The solar system looks great. 👍👍👍 With the Hoppes number 9 on the Dean Grace Lathe for cleaning, back in my early days we used it for removing copper fouling inside rifle bores, on high power rifles with projectile velocities over 4200-4500 fps, the copper jacket material would get impregnated into the pores of the steel barrel, rifling lands. The Hoppes number 9 if you soaked it and let it sit for 10-15 minutes would eat away at the copper, then you could scrub it with a bronze bristle brush to remove the copper fouling. Rinse & repeat But you had to clean the Hoppes out well afterwards and oil it up coz from memory it’s pretty acidic and if left in for any length of time would start to eat away at the barrel steel & promote rust. So I’m not sure how well it will go cleaning your bedways of rust on the lathe, (unless they were copper fouled?). 🤷‍♂️ Can’t see that it would hurt any probably, but do take care to clean it off really well afterwards & oil it up liberally straight away. 👍 (Yes, you likely know all this already). 😉👍 Great progress, keep it up.

    Hello Max. The lathe is looking good. If your taper attachment is like mine then it should have very little wear. I insisted on having one when I ordered my lathe (I bought mine new) and was excited to finally have one. In the first ten years I owned the lathe I used the taper attachment once. At about year twelve I removed it completely and put it under my work bench in case I ever needed it. It is now year seventeen and I still have not needed to reinstall it. When I first got it I discovered that the slight clearance in all the slides and other joints allowed the cross slide to float slightly (I was able to see this because of my digital readouts.) No amount of snugging up could eliminate it completely. After about two weeks of owning the lathe I made a lock and bolted the leadscrew thrust bearing bracket solid to the saddle. When I wanted to use the taper attachment I just had to remove two screws and release the lock. It turned out that I spent way more time making the lock then I did using the taper attachment. Oh well. Ken

    Audio is something that is overlooked quit often in the youtube world, some people do not care anything about it, and some people spend all of there life trying to get the audio just right, Art Bell a late night talk show host was one, and another on youtube is Mr. Carlson's Lab, he is an electronic genus and his audio is I would say perfect, it would be nice if youtubers could come some where in the middle, then I would be happy. I would rate your audio maybe a little above the middle, it is not bad, as to the interference in your shop, I do not hear anything that is interfering with your presentation. Audio is the one thing that is overlooked and could be improved upon with almost every youtube channel. But you do a great job, in bringing back to life some older machines that can in the right hands still do precision work. Thank you for letting us go along for the ride, And of course the Horizontal Boring Mill if you can ever get that back together will be a real asset to your shop. I love the Photovoltaic system on the roof by summer you will be selling electricity to the Utility.

    G'day Max. I've been avidly watching your DS&G taper turning toolroom lathe restoration. I served part of my engineering apprenticeship on very similar model of lathe (a little shorter bed), in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. The lathe was manufactured in Keighley, near Leeds. By the way, Keighley is pronounced Keithley, not Keeley, although I have no idea why... it's probably a West Riding of Yorkshire thing. Regarding the paint colour, I can attest its original to be, what I would call, 'Battleship Grey', and never any shade of green. Keep up the good work, Max.

    Hi Max Another great video. I see that your brass compound nut had no backlash adjustment. I am going to do an overhaul on my compound and was looking for inspiration from others.

  • @janstaines5989

    @janstaines5989

    Жыл бұрын

    One of the issues with this design is that the nut is what limits the travel of the top slide, so adding backlash adjustment that increases its size reduces travel.

  • @johnspathonis1078

    @johnspathonis1078

    Жыл бұрын

    @@janstaines5989 The idea I have for my lathe is to split the nut lengthwise on one side only. Then place a clamping screw to clamp the nut together slightly (a bit like the lead screw half nut). This has the advantage that the complete length of the thread takes the load. I think it will work. Test the fit and adjust the lead screw backlash before assembly or alternatively drill an access hole for an allen key so that the adjustment can be done at any time without disassembly.

    Hi Max, my workmate removed the taper turning attachment on our large Leblond lathe the easy way. He didn't realise the sling on our overhead crane was snagged, ripped it clean off. I used Hoppes No 9 on my two 303 Enfields, used to let it sit overnight and brush out and swab and reoil to stop rust. Trans oil with acetone might be a good application for your machines.

  • @swanvalleymachineshop

  • @melgross

    @melgross

    Жыл бұрын

    @@swanvalleymachineshopthe thing I don’t like about brass brushes is that sometimes they leave a brassy finish on the surface. I suppose it’s the only thing to use though. Nylon and polyester brushes aren’t hard enough, and everything else is too hard. Though when working on hardened parts, stainless brushes work better. I also didn’t hear the fan until you were at the panel.

    Hi Max. Last time I used a taper turning attachment was 10 years ago on a Herbert 9C turret lathe. I was turning some tapered muff couplings, the setup was a pain as I didn't know what the taper was and the shafts were 150mm dia and about 2m long. The couplings weighted 40kg and I had to blue them in. Turned out they were 1:16 but boy was I tired doing the trial fits. Looks like you have a good unit there as you say they dont get much use normally so hopefully you wont have much grief. The solar panels look great and could save you a bundle, just a thought, how are you fixed for wind?. lol. A turbine might help as well. Best wishes , Mal.
