Thank you for the video! I agree with the butane, I have a big shot butane torch but I feel like it isn't able to get to the right temperature sometimes so I struggle soldering sometimes. Torch is def an investment that I will be doing next!

Just want to throw in my thanks as well. I've been watching tons of different videos (started out interested in ring making but you're making me want to do everything now, hah) and you are by far the best teacher I've come across. You really know your stuff *and* you really seem to understand what it's like to be totally new. So many people skip over crucial details, probably because they've been in it for so long or assume their audience has a certain background knowledge. So thank you, man, I will definitely continue to follow your videos. BTW you should do one on your background, how you got into this stuff, how long you've been doing it, etc. I always like to know stuff like that and I'm sure others would, as well. Cheers!

Ive has success using the silver coil one as the easiest, lowest melt point. I hammer it down flat and clip pieces off, and it’s worked fine.

For fluxes, i ground borax into an almost powdered sugar consistancy in a mortar and pestle, mixed in some home made rosin flux cut with isopropyl, and viola! The rosin does the initial clean and as it flashes off, the borax does the heavy lifting. Plus, the liquid rosin solder helped in carrying the borax to evenly coat the part im soldering.

i bought the sterling silver paste solder and 14k paste solder from rio grande, im having trouble getting s successful bond with my butane torch every time, so i was wondering if i could use a soldering iron with this paste solder?

No you can't, the soldering iron don't get hot enough to melt it. Let's see if I can help you out, but I need some more info. What metals are you using? Are you using flux and if so is it for high temp and what brand is it.

Which one would you recommend for jewelry making then? I want to melt metals onto crystals/minerals. Would the propane torch be the most efficient or the handheld mini torch? Any tips for a beginner?

Well you don't want to melt metals into crystals or stones seeing that the stone would likely crack or even shatter from the heat. Any of the torches will work for a beginner and help your learn how things work. Great Video. All I find are permanent jewelry videos tacking little jump rings to gold and silver bracelets. I cant find any videos for what i am trying to do. I am trying to find out what's the best setup for soldering stainless steel jump rings ( 1mm 19GA.) to Stainless Steel Rings and Bezels? I figured I definitely need a Torch and probably Flux paste and solder sheets. But which? 1. Any Flux paste and Solder Sheets? or a Certain type just for Stainless Steel? 2. A $600 Torch? or a little Butane Torch? Any Expertise on this including Do's and Don'ts that you can share would be greatly appreciated.

Could you do a video on how to plate copper to cover up solder? I would really appreciate it. Great videos! I really enjoy them.

It was very weak for one and doesn't fuse the metals together like jewelry solder. Also you can't color match it with the silver.

What soldering paste containing flux do you recommend for jump rings in gold filled and rose gold? Can you post a video of you soldering a jump ring using the torch? Do we have to use a pickle after soldering? If so, what do we use for gold filled and rose gold filled?

You can get some good solder paste from riogrande.com as for gold filled, I don't normally work with it but I would think it would be similar to other ways of working with silver. I can make a soldering jumping video but I don't have any gold filled metals to work with but I can do it with some silver. I believe you can put it into pickle after soldering it to clean it up but you would still need to polish and clean it up after that. If you have more questions please feel free to contact me.

Do you mean fine silver as in 99% or Sterling silver? I used hard, med, easy and extra easy silver solder on all of my work but it depends on what you are making and at what point you are at. Hey there I love your channel inspired me to start soldering and now I've made a couple pendants and rings I've run into a problem recently and I don't know what's causing it but I'm trying to add a small ring to the top of a pendant so I can attach it to a necklace. I've been able to successfully solder everything else I needed, but for some reason every time I try to solder the ring onto the base, the solder doesn't stick to the pendant it only sticks to the ring. I've noticed that when the solder flows it always goes to the ring even if it's touching the base of the pendant there's still a tiny Gap separating the two never having the solder successfully fuse. The solder is brand new shet like you use, I've used flux and I've cleaned my piece several times even filing it down a little bit to make it as flush as possible any idea what might be causing this problem?

Heat is your problem. The small ring will get hotter than the rest of it much faster. So what you want to do is make sure your pendent is up to temp as well. Solder will file to the hottest point so this is mostly your problem.

Gentec makes a torch that is almost identical to the Smith torch called the Small Torch. It is cheaper than the Smith and a little bit better quality but it is very close in my opinion. Mine is in a propane and oxygen using an old oxygen concentrator instead of using oxygen tanks which insurance companies have problems with. The disposable propane fits nicely in the oxy tank holder on the concentrator.

It's oddly marked so this will work even though it says low temp on it. It's basically the low end of high temperature flux.

Thank you for great video. I have 2 questions: I was trying to close a sterling silver ring using medium solder wire and a butane torch. Well. I reckon I stood there for about 10 mins heating the ring and the join and the solder never melted. I was using medium solder because I was planning to attach another piece to the top of the ring later on with easy solder. The ring is very solid so I was wondering if the butane torch wasn't capable of getting up to a hot enough temp OR was my piece of solder too big, if that is possible? How big can pieces be in order to use a butane hand held torch? Just another question: Should I just use easy solder and do the join and add the top piece at the same time? Thank you, Sarah

No problem and no not the torch but what is the piece you are trying to solder sitting on like is it a solder block or something like that. Because if you have it on some thick steel or something it will suck up all the heat and you part will never solder

@@GomeowCreations It is a soldering block and I am using flux and cleaning the join and the join is neat and flush. I've just tried it again and my stick of medium solder just sticks to the top of the join in one piece without melting. I even picked it off, put it on my solder block and fired it on its own. It turned into a little ball, so it can melt, just not on the ring. Also, the ring is going white and black with the heat.

I created a modest laboratory on my study desk in the bedroom, and I do not hide that I accidentally burned some university books 😅 but I continue to learn and thank you for this content

Is acid-core solder bad for jewelry? Even if it says its for metal work?

Yeah, no. That is not something you want to use for jewelry. If it is lead free silver solder it only has like 5% silver in it and the jewelry solder has like 75% silver. That soft solder is really only for electronics, stain glass and plumbing. There are people that use some soft solder for jewelry just it's not alot and not strong at all.

Hi! You mentioned needing high-temp flux, but Handy Flux is low temp - is it still okay? I'm confused!

Yeah handy flux is good to use. I know it says low temp on it but it's rated for the temps you need.

I have a ring that snapped, there is no gap but you can tell it snapped how do I go about fixing it without taking it to a jeweler. I bought a soldering kit a while back it looks like a very easy fix but I don’t want to spend a lot of money the ring was about 70 dollars. Spending more than 20 to 30 is not worth it to me but any advice will be helpful. Thank you in advance.

Yes but it's the back part that snapped. I had resized it and it snapped while on my finger. I can still wear it bit the area where it snapped pinches my skin

I make my own solder out of 72% silver and 28% copper which is technically a brazing filler but I use it so I can melt all my stuff down add a couple pellets of fine silver and not have to worry about zinc

can i use jewelry wire to solder instead of soldering wire? because i'd like to use a variety of colors and can't seem to find soldering wire in more than silver and copper.

No, that's how that works. You use solder because it melts at a lower temp compared the other metal. You can get a yellow solder and gold if your looking for colors like that.

There are many sellers on ETSY that sell jewelry made with silver solder using the 'Tiffany Technique'. Some of the pieces are quite pricey. Should I not expect these pieces to last since they were made with a soldering iron?

Tea and art is a KZread channel that shares videos of her soft solder method jewelry. I belong to a Facebook group devoted to Tiffany soft solder jewelry making, and I’m not aware of any particular complaints about durability. That said, for fine jewelry with precious gems I would not personally lean towards this method.

It depends on the stone but most of them will not hold up to heat so you solder everything before setting the stones.

Your torch really matters, especially if you are poor.

You're miss guiding newbies somewhat. You can make 5 to 10 joints (being conservative and safe) with hard before moving to medium, then easy. The zinc /wetting agent vaporizes off. therefore your previous solder joint will have a higher melting temp then the new joint

Same. It wouldnt melt my hard solder at all and took forever to melt my medium. My new smith little torch melts hard solder in 10 seconds!

@@Dan-ji4db I use weird solder now but I've done fusing a lot of small stuff and all I've ever used was propane, I need to use MAPP gas for casting though. How big is the stuff you're soldering?

Pointing at things and saying “do this”/“don’t that”, “use this”/“avoid that” without explain why, is not very helpful. Demonstrations go a long way. Such as good soldering equipment vs bad soldering equipment by ‘showing’ the results of each. Without that your video is nothing more but telling your preferences.

The point of this video was to tell people not to use a soldering iron for making jewelry. It is my number one question from new people getting into jewelry making. Most people only know of electrical and plumbing solder so this was made to let them know not to use it and you have to use a torch with jewelry grade silver solder and show the different torch options and my thoughts on them. I also like to this video for all the people that ask about using a soldering iron or electrical solder so I don't have to write out a wall of text to explain it to them. 😅👍

I myself am a visual learner. -two plus two equals four, made no sense to me until after my teacher drew it out on the board.
