Very good album . It's a crime that their best song at the time was out only as an EP : "WItch's promise" , "Teacher" was the B side. I came to knew JT by the EP as a little kid aged of 6 (in 1970) and love it, listen to Benefit 12 years after (both were my uncle's) and loved it .

Wow! That’s devotion. I have to this point been a marginal fan but this series has definitely given me a greater appreciation of their music.

A great review of a great album . Benefit has always been one of my favourites of the early albums . It has a lot of variety , and as you said , it has a lot of riffs and guitar . And I like the song Sossity You're a Woman as well . One of the things that I've always liked about them is their mixture of acoustic and electric rock , and they always seem to get a good balance of the two sides to their music . Thanks for the excellent video !!

Hi Jeff!!! I know nothing about this album, never heard it before..... a very cool way to learn about the songs and the evolution the band had from their first to this much heavier guitar sound album. Cheers and be well

Thanks Cristian! It definitely is a transitional album pointing the way toward Aqualung and Thick as a Brick. Cheers!

Hey Jeff, well worth the wait👍🏻 I’ve always been a Jethro Tull fan, but watching their history is giving me insight to them as a band. I always wondered why they changed Bass players, that over parting can be detrimental. ☹️ lookin forward to Aqualung!🙂

Thank you! I am learning a lot about the band as well. The only member I knew anything about before starting the series was Ian Anderson.

Both Jethro Tull and Cat Stevens both tackled the same subject, conflict between generations, in their respective tunes: Tull's 'Son' and Stevens' 'Father and Son'. But while JT's depiction of the "father figure" is harsh, aggressive, and intolerant while the son is shown as guileless and sacrificial, Mr. Stevens treats both characters in exactly opposite ways! I have to confess that being an old fart myself these days, I think that Mr. Stevens' take is more on the money. Youth, by nature, tends to express itself in more loudly and emotional... (which can be at times necessary.) 'Benefit' has a particular poignancy for me. I first heard the whole album (I was already familiar with 'Teacher' due to its play on Philadelphia's progressive rock stations) when I was one of the patients in the Young People's Ward at Friends Hospital (a mental health facility). It was a record that, for some reason, was in heavy rotation along with Alice Cooper's 'Love It To Death and its 'Ballad of Dwight Fry! So whenever I hear it, I get a bit of a nostalgic lump in my throat!

Thanks Jeffrey! I also appreciate that our names pop up in at least 4 JT songs. I agree my perspective on these songs has shifted now that I have grown kids of my own. I am more sympathetic to the Cat Stevens portrayal, although it’s quite possible Ian’s father deserved a less than flattering characterization.

Hey Jeff! Glad to know I got you on a Tull kick! After the Amazon screw up, I was all set to send this to you, but I see you have your own copy. So I guess the big question is; do you prefer this or 'This Was'? Any reason why you are skipping over 'Stand Up' and heading straight into 'Aqualung'? Looking forward to that, and hopefully 'Thick as a Brick'. Love these!
