Jet Li vs. Yasuaki Kurata - Fist of Legend (Original Cantonese and Mandarin Re-Sound)

Фильм және анимация

The original Cantonese sound effects for the fight scenes sometimes had a little too much of the "psshh psshh" that was common throughout the 90s' Hong Kong action films especially in the sequence between Jet Li and Yasuaki Kurata. Because I own the Dragon Dynasty Blu-Ray, I decided to take it's Mandarin Dub, which has a much heavier bass in its sound design whilst still maintaining the overall sound style of that era, and spliced it together with the original Cantonese. That way during the dialogue, Jet Li and Yasuaki Kurata are speaking with their actual voices rather than being dubbed by Mandarin voice actors particularly good for retaining Kurata's Japanese lines. The non-dialogue segments have the Mandarin re-sound to accentuate the impact of the hits. Unfortunately the ki-yas, grunts, etc., are in Mandarin so you get a deeper voiced Kurata who often yells "Haizo!". Not to mention the Dragon Dynasty edition uses "dub-titles" which only subtitles the English dub instead of the original Cantonese which means words aren't accurately translated. Though that's more of a problem during the dialogue not shown in the video where Jet Li and Yasuaki Kurata's characters are discussing martial arts philosophy. Otherwise you get the best of both audio versions. The only other issue is that the sounds are slightly altered in each version such as the music and background noise like the rush of the wind both having a different pitch. It can be quite noticeable in this video when it goes from dialogue to non-dialogue but there was only so much I could do about it using iMovie of course. Anyways, I hope you enjoy it! And check out my websites for top 12 lists on different categories of fight scenes.

    I wonder, too, if any of it was an old master imparting a lesson to a gifted student, a little "hey, slow down a bit, don't rush into a fight so blindly". The dialogue post-fight shows Kurata's character's wisdom and understanding of hand-to-hand combat, as well as his great respect for Chen Zhen and his master, it gave a lot more depth to the fight itself.

It was the first "Jet Li" movie I ever watched specifically because he was in it. That’s because back in the day where they didn’t have the ability to digitally edit out wires, they would smear Vaseline on the top of the lens so that the wire couldn’t be seen, now the wires themselves were thin, but we’re metallic, so light could reflect off the surface of the wire and expose it.

    Such a crazy fight scene, and really creative choreography. Granted, I always hated the SLIGHTLY overcranked cam speeds in Jet Li's films. I mean 6-12% is fine--great, even. But once it starts hitting 16%, it's just too bloody much. THEY'RE ALREADY FAST. They don't need to be impossible to see or follow. 😕 That's the opposite of awesome storytelling, lol.

    Thank you for retaining the original Japanese voice actor's actual dialogue instead of the Mandarin dubs. I watched the dubbed version once and never liked it. Here, there's a touch of authenticity that is particularly complementary to the film's pros. For example, while it is not unexpected for Kurata's character to be fluent in Cantonese (since he's a scholar) and Jet Li to be fluent in Japanese (since he had been studying in Japan), you still hear the elder fighter's choice of speaking in Japanese - indicative of his belief in Japanese superiority and patriotism (even though he isn't as extreme as some other characters, like the film's primary antagonist).

    Still one of the best duel fight in the history of cinema

  • @Kncperseus
    @Kncperseus10 ай бұрын

    One of the primary reasons this fight stands out is because they are both respectful opponents. You can see by Chen Zhen's initial defensive moves against the Jap(anese) fighter that he is completely taken aback at the sheer ferocity and the efficiency in the karate techniques employed. Till this moment, Chen Zhen has very rarely encountered a karateka of this level. This fight thus helps him indirectly prepare for the final duel by giving him an idea of what to expect from the evil military officer antagonist. The Jap fighter, despite his experience dealing with Chinese kung-fu in the past, is nonetheless impressed by Chen Zhen's natural affinity for the martial art. They thus part ways amicably, with the older man giving his blessings to the couple - something even Chen Zhen's own (adoptive) Chinese family refused to do when they learned of his relationship with his Japanese gf.

  • @KasumiR

    @KasumiR

    2 ай бұрын

    The whole story of Chen Zhen was always about how he's let down by his own peers, like in Bruce Lee version he defends them and they get mad at him because Japanese will be back but more angry... They refuse to stand up to bullies. In the end, we know Japan list the war and Chinese government lost the following civil war to russia backed communists, being colonized by other foreign ideology instead.
