• Jet Engine Backyard Ep...
Episode 2 of a video which focuses on homebuilt and garage gas turbine / jet engines.
Karls Rolls Royce Derwent is now mounted to a truck, a custom built starting panel now makes the engine easy to manage, again we see how impressive the Derwent is at idle and then full power.
We then move onto one of todays younger jet builders, built from infomation gathered on the internet, this engine displays all the hallmarks of good backyard jet design.
A invitation is detailed at the end of the video for people interested in being part of episode 3, a sort of twisted competition for those who like a little jet in their life.

Truck turbos are good for home made jets. Raspberry pi's aren't in the australian summer. My pi crashed, turned off the oil pump, jammed the throttle to full open and the turbo self destructed. Thankfully no one was injured. The police were quite amused to find out it was a bunch of experimenters playing with a home made jet, and not a mad man with a mortar! Love that Derwent. Beautiful engine!

@wayneroughneckz sometimes you don't need a purpose to play with a jet, it tends to be more about the thrill of the experience when you play with them I have found stuff with a purpose attached tend to be too much like hard work

@Cmpnioncube From the web I found this..hope this answers part of your question Derwent Mk.I entered production with 2,000 lbf (8.9 kN) of thrust. Mk.II, III and IV's followed, peaking at 2,400 lbf (10.7 kN) of thrust. The Derwent was the primary engine of all the early Meteors

@rustychrome I believe the old truck was once used in the film industry, back on films like Mad Max, it used to belong to the grip called Ray Brown, or better known as Brownie. The film industry is full of custom built and altered trucks, this is yet another.

Your right, the Derwent is not very powerful, its more hot air and noise than raw power, what is interesting as the jet engine developed each new jet was nearly doubling the thrust output, those early jet aircraft must have been tricky to fly with such sluggish gas turbines, apart from some of the earlt German stuff, problem there was the engines wore out very quickly. These days its all taked for granted.

  • @leokimvideo

These very early gas turbines don't have the power of todays units, the truck has brakes and that easily enough to stop the effect of this type of turbine. Aircraft brakes do the same, brakes applied and you can power up the engines without moving forward.

I stood next to one of these in a dragster chassis behind art morrisons shop(fife washington) in the 90's you can't even imagine the noise or power one of these puts out.. quite exciting chaining it to a telephone pole and winding her up btw the brakes on that truck are enough to hold it still normal jet dragsters run full throttle without burner at the starting line then light the burners at the green light. the truck wont move.

Then I found an old snowblower in the alley and mounted it's 3 horsepower engine on the front of the bike. Although the snowblower engine was better than the makeshift cog wheel/conduit pipe assembly, the high RPMs caused practically every propeller design to fly apart. Also even made pretzels out of the shorter makeshift prop shafts, too, and even when it did hold together, the bike only move a couple inches forward at most.

Hey, I love the idea of having a turbine - and knowing EXACTLY how everything works - I don't think I'd have the time to dedicate to it though. One quick question.. When a turbine heli. or jet is starting up there's always a "click click click", is that an initial ignition system or is it always running? I'd imagine the combustion chamber would be self sustaining.. What fuel do you run the large engine on?

Awsome power.I work in lanfill and have witnessed the gas turbines that burn the gas and generate electricity for the grid.Good use of turbines.

i was wondering what factors need to be considered when desiging a combustion chamber... i.e. diamiter and length proportional to CFM of compressor? or possibly shape and flow path... what makes the most efficient burn with a liquid fuel such as kerosene, and what provides for the best longevity of the turbine, in terms of the combustion chamber...

And the question we all want answered is: Did you ever fire up the jet, get behind the wheel and take the handbrake off? And if not, why not? The coolest thing would be to go to a street drag, fire up the jet to a thrust that your brakes and tyres can just hold and see how fast your car can do the quater (using the trucks engine to get rolling).

Have you guys considered moving on to a concept called the "trapped vortex combustion"? GE, Nasa, and our mil have been researching it for about 10 years. There is no moving vanes and it is supposed to burn very clean and with laminar flows, it is self cooling as well. The mil testing phase has ended at the end of 2007, reporting is done throughout 2008. There is a lot of info out there on it if you google hard enough. -cheers

First, what is the brand of the truck in the first video? Second, I own a small commercial gas turbine, mounted on a bell 204b helicopter. Running a generator with a gas turbine is not only nothing new, it is the normal mode of operation of both the APU of quite a few aircraft as well as the "Ground start cart" that you will find at airports around the world. As the APU has a given service life they are rebuild only as the airframe is in service, finding a used one is easy.
