Jesus Loves Addicts - Luke

When a person ingests a substance or engages in an activity that provides temporary pleasure and then such acts become compulsive and interfere with ordinary life responsibilities, he or she is said to be an addict. Addictive behavior is widespread and is one of the reasons many addicts turn to Christ for help. Jesus has a special message for them and a special plan to help them. As the body of Christ to our generation, shouldn’t the church be part of that plan?
This teaching is from our series Jesus Loves People with Skip Heitzig from Calvary Albuquerque.

It's kindness that leads us to repentance.. I just dropped off my daughter at the detention center again because she used again. I didn't get angry I felt the heaviness like crazy of how ashamed she is .. I drove her away from her son crying as he was with my sister and I knew that was shame enough... I was quiet the whole way and I think she wanted me to be mean and this time was different. I had been prepared by Jesus today . Her eyes were so empty, so lonely, so much pain .I took her hands and prayed it's YOUR kindness that will lead her to repentance Lord . She cried so hard and I felt every tear. I used to be so angry but that wasn't helpful at all. It literally keeps addicts bound I believe. But then she got out and I blasted the song On My knees and she did that before she entered the door. I pulled away balling , my baby girl so much pain . Then on Klove Classics came the Song , It's YOUR KINDNESS THAT LEADS US TO REPENTANCE OH LORD , KNOWING THAT YOU LOVE US , KNOW MATTER WHAT WE DO , MAKES US WANT TO LOVE YIU MORE. 😭😭😭😭.. THANK YOU JESUS, I prayed, yes Lord that was You in me and YOUR WILL that I love her still. That was Jesus and I'm so happy bc I believe that her deliverance is coming this time. By His kindness she will want to love HIM more , repent and turn and have a NEW LIFE IN CHRIST... ty Jesus for what you're about to do. 😊

“He can take away a desire instantly” Yes he can! He literally did this to me! I prayed and asked for him to help me with my drinking problem, I was a heavy addict of alcohol and he literally took my desire away! I never want to even take a sip of alcohol! I also had a marijuana problem and guess what? I stopped smoking cold turkey! One day I woke up and no longer wanted to smoke anymore! I know it doesn’t even sound real but it’s true! I used to smoke weed everyday of my life 4-5 times a day lots of time even more than that! When you ask him for help and actually mean it, he will help you! Read the Bible, pray to him and actually want to stop and he will help

So I just asked God for help. Just told him that I want to stop and I asked him to clean my addiction. I told him I would do my part but please help. One day I woke up, I remember that day like it was yesterday. Usually I would think about what I would do that night and which drink I was going to be drinking. Today I used and I was convicted before I even smoked. Me and my friend went picking mushrooms right after we smoked. And I got a strong paranoia and felt compelled to walk through these thorns to find morels. And I ended up being on my hands and knees crawling through thorns just to get to the other side and to find mushrooms. But as I was crawling I kept thinking of Jesus and the torture and pain he endured for each and every on of us. It hurt just crawling through thorns. Imagine being beating until you are unrecognizable and having a crown of thorns embedded to your head and laughed at. He did this for every single one of us. It showed me that we all put idols before God and try to satisfy ourselves so frequently.

There is greater reward in life when you are a child of God that Loves Jesus! He blesses your home, your relationships, your job, your finances, everything you're involved with on earth he blesses! He will give you peace and happiness with the woman he made for you! Peace wth your parents, family, your child or children! Peace in your job! Peace in your mind. That is 10,000 times greater than the instant and very short gratification one gets from sexual addiction. Lord I Love you so much knowing how much GREATER you are than anything on earth!

I just got done with a binger of coke and various other drugs. Now mind you I have been a binger my whole life. I don't use everyday but when I do it's in excess. I've sought guidance before and was Good but as time went on I started to lose touch with God. I would still pray daily but I slowly strayed away. When I was using last I lost my family my job everything. I got divorced. So I kicked the drugs to at least be clean so I could at least see my children. Well fast forward 10 years and I now have a new family. Beautiful wife and son. And now I have collapsed back into the dark. I started back up with using only in certain situations(at parties, etc.). Well it all led up to the binger I just got done with this past Saturday. I didnt return home for more than 24 hrs afraid and ashamed that my wife would see what I've done to myself. I am now currently going through the sickness of not doing the drugs and confessed to my wife what i did. I am so grateful for jesus's sacrifice for me. I am currently seeking his guidance. Any prayers for me would be greatly appreciated. I want to fight this and end this cycle. I d ok not want to lose my family again. Thank you for reading this. God bless us all.

Remember that in Hebrews, it says that our God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. He will reward you and bless you in the struggle. Remember that its day by day by day. Ask Him to change your heart and habits, and He will do it. Ask Him for wisdom to change and do His will. He'll free you from the things that seem to entangle you.

When I was a teenager I worked hard and got ahead had everything going for me and I got addicted to cocaine and ecstasy. I went on a 9 day benge coke by day and ecstasy by night. By the end of this I had not slept in 9 days and could not even get high anymore. I was hearing voices and wanted to die. The few weeks prior I had felt God trying to intervene. One occasion was I was up for 3 days and was driving out to my parents house to get away and the whole ride every church stood out like a emergency vehicle on the side of the road. I ended up turning on the TV and a movie call Joshua was on and without knowing it was Christian movie I watched it and it touched me. Well after being up for 9 days I was numb to everything and grabbed a gun and held it to my head and with my last breath I prayed “God if your there I need you to help me”. I started crying but not out of shame or sadness but with a new found will to live and knowing I would survive. My step dad happen to come by randomly and I handed him all my drugs soon as he walked in and said I need help. He hugged me and said admitting you need help is the first step. I slept for almost 3 days. I engulfed my life with God for many years and slowly fell away and forgot the whole ordeal. I started thinking I saved myself and met my wife and we had 2 kids. I started battling with addiction again drinking way to much to pain pills then to shooting fentanyl. Pretty much lost everything and got into legal problems. I’m now trying to get my life back together but it’s hard without the rush or energy from the drugs and now starting from nothing with no help. Im not going to say I have not relapsed a few time over the past few month but I can say I win over the habit most days. I remember when I was on fire for God and that was the only high I needed and I long for that again. Recently I feel a pull towards God and I know I am losing the war even know I been winning battles. I am only a pin drop away to falling flat on my face and this time I know I won’t survive a full relapse. I know now he saved me before and without him I am weak. Please pray for me! I surrender myself to God, all of me and everything that is not of him I relinquish. I am unclean and unworthy of his love but if he is willing to save me and wash me clean please please Jesus take this away from me. Let me feel your embrace again. I know I am weak and without you I will fail. I will not lean on my own strength because I am nothing without you. Please God hear my cry for help and pull me up from my hell. I do not deserve your grace but I know in my heart you are there in my time of need. I’m sorry for forgetting what you done for me many years ago and saving me from the path I was on and in my own ignorance I walked away from you. Please lord I am knocking and begging for you to take it out of me. Let your will be done oh good Lord!

Psalm 27:10 "For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the Lord will take me in." God revealed himself to me around 10 yo when physical abuse began at home. As a teenager, my mother and step father were drugging all three of the kids with wine and GHB so they could molest us without us remembering. I remember making a conscious decision one day that I didn't want anything to do with women if they're anything like my mother. I came to accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior in my 20s but my emotional and psychological struggles continued. I always struggled with how little my mother seemed to care for my safety during and after the abuse years. I witnessed a conversation between her and her parents, who told her, "You know we can have your kids taken away from you at any time." My mother refused to explain. So even my grandparents were aware of what was happening and did nothing to protect me. The reality is that there wasn't a single person in my entire family who cared enough about me to protect me. And if I meant so little to everyone else, why should my life mean any more to me? That thought fueled Major Depressive Disorder and about 50 suicide attempts throughout my life, almost half of those before I graduated from high school. In my early 40s, I got involved with crystal meth to help cope with the stress. A few years ago, I entered rehab and felt driven to leave a church led by a gay pastor. In conversation with the pastor, he refused to acknowledge the Bible passages critical of homosexuality. However I continued with gay sex in my private life with meth use. Rehab in conjunction with trauma counseling brought me to forgive my mother and begin to pray for her salvation. She lived her entire life hating God. Some people have asked how I was able to forgive her. The Holy Spirit helped me to understand the situation from her point of view. She experienced intense public humiliation and shaming from her own father as a child. Unfortunately she wasn't able to get professional help and under the right circumstances she just unraveled. But she wasn't always like that. So we were both abused, albeit in different ways. She couldn't handle it very well but neither did I. We just had different ways of coping. She constructed a fantasy world where nothing happened and she wasn't capable of doing anything of the sort. I stuck a needle in my arm just to have a few hours where I didn't have to think about everything. So again, we're the same. And if we're both the same at the core, then I don't have to internalize anything. Seeing her life journey through the lens of mental health issues allowed me to foster compassion. All the anger and resentments slowly melted away. I was able to forgive her after I related to her. I was healed from the depression after I forgave my abusers. But I still live with PTSD. With the help of the Holy Spirit, I was able to cast out a demon of addiction with an unpronounceable name. I felt it leave my body. The next morning I had no draw to meth use and almost entirely lost cigarette cravings after trying to quit smoking numerous times. More recently, I felt compelled to read Revelation and the warnings to the seven churches really hit me hard. I vowed to completely turn from my gay past. I only recently learned how the Vatican changed the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday so I'm now changing my life again to honor the Sabbath on the seventh day instead of the first as Jesus instructed. However, I also understand that we are saved by grace alone. So this change isn't about doing anything to earn salvation, but more in line with obedience. It's been a lifetime journey with Jesus, leaning on him constantly. I'm now free of my traumatic past, free of drug use, free of smoking (with lozenges) and free of the gay life. Beating gay people with Bible criticism will only drive them away from God. Christians need compassion to help gay and lesbian people cope with their underlying issues so they're open to the healing power and guidance of the Holy Spirit. With all my traumatic past and drug addiction behind me, I'm now facing potential metastatic cancer (waiting for official diagnosis) AND a hole in a heart valve from drug use - all without the support of family or friends. But the benefit of having been through such a difficult life is knowing the closeness of relationship with Jesus I certainly would not enjoy had it not been for those trials. Jesus has saved my life on at least three occasions. There have been many visions of the two of us alone in an all-white room as he counsels me and other "close encounters" over my life, prompting me to track many of them in a God Journal. So as I face this new trial, I have no doubts that he will continue to walk with me by my side. Undoubtedly he's been the closest friend I've ever known. "If you abide in me, I will abide in you." The Holy Spirit once told me that abide means to linger in the presence of another. So what God is really saying is this: "If you hang out with me, I'll hang out with you." God/Jesus/Holy Spirit just want to be friends with you. What do friends do when they hang out? They TALK. Prayer was always meant to be a two way verbal conversation, not some lonely thought stuck in your head. God often works in 3s to reflect the Trinity. 1) If you abide in me, I will abide in you. 2) Pray without ceasing 3) Contemplate your word day and night Three verses all saying the same thing: TRUST - BELIEVE - TALK FOOTNOTE: I recently bought a used copy of the movie Big Fish. An elderly man made a lifetime habit of sharing the details of his life through grand, flowery tales bringing joy, laughter, inspiration and fond memories to those who heard. It tells of his son's journey to unravel truth from fantasy as his father battles cancer. After watching it again for the first time in many years, I asked God absentmindedly before bed how the story applies to me. Here's what he said the following morning: The plain details of my life were these: abused, abandoned, betrayed, suicidal, depressed, hopeless, alone - my destiny was clear. But God preferred the more flowery version of the tale and began leading me down a different path. Thank you for all my trials Lord. From glory to glory to eventually finished glory. God makes all things work for the good of those who love him. (I'm not praying for healing. If you feel moved to pray for me, please pray for pain management and that I will be reunited with Jesus in heaven, finally free of all struggle and striving.) All glory to God - there's no way I could have survived this long without him. May these words inspire and comfort all who read them. Amen Feel free to share my testimony with others in your life who may be coping with similar issues or benefit from a story of hope and bountiful faithfulness of Christ Jesus.

Finished this sermon and it hit so hard! The way I needed it to... It's already on repeat. Makes me so disturbed and sickens me to the core to know all the times I said "this will be the last time, I promise" and I used again. Again. And again. And found myself here in my desparity AGAIN after using. as I was listening I felt like my body was shouting itself down. My stomach was in coils with acid, my temperature of my body all over the map from Minnesota freezing temps to Hawaii equator sunshine on the Beach. It was hard to concentrate . My head was pounding and felt like it was swelling in tension..my mobility was lagging and the tears wouldn't stop. But I just kept praying and believing . Lots of things were definitely coming to light. But God was still right here. Loving me , fighting for me. Catching me in his GRACE that" I AM " so UNDESERVING OF. I want to be free of my addictions once on for all. I pray in Jesus' name this is it! I want to live. I want to be free. I want a baby and a husband. my clock is ticking. Addiction is like playing Russian roulette. I want to be the godly woman my heart so longs to be since I was a lil girl. I'm DONE giving away everything for one thing. And I'm ready to give up one thing to gain everything . I proclaim it in Jesus holy name. My father, my redeemer, my Rock and salvation. My greatest love.

Well, all i can say is the numbness overpowers me, lost all connections to everything i used to have. I have noticed i feel like the desire i used to have and passion for life and love are absent. I search, i pray, i try, but feelings dont come from the brain. Im not the same and i cant feel god anymore.how do i fix it? I am disconnected, when i used to love. I prefer to be alone instead of socializing. I am not lonely or upset infact its easy for me to walk away. I remember i used to live life with my heart, i would save, and notice, build up the broken, i believed, i felt, i touched lives, i laughed, i felt comfort, i felt strong, i planned to be, now i just breath, thank god im still breathing. I cant even think clearly and im on the verge of being unable to function. I can pretend but its fake. Any body know what to do or can anyone at all give me some explanation. I cant focuse on this video or anything for that matter. I begged god so many times and the feeling that he cares is gone.has he turned his back on me? I tell myself im not and i wont and i cant maintain the motivation to have control.

Lacee, Thank you for reaching out and being willing to share your struggles. We would love to be able to help you in any way we can and will be praying for you. I would like to start by telling you that God wants your heart to be full again, He wants you to love and feel loved again, and He wants you to touch lives again. He wants you to do those things by His spirit and His strength. I am believing, that as Paul said to the Philippians, “God, who began a good work within you, will continue His work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” I want to encourage you to focus in on what God has for you in this time of struggle. You need to come before Him humbly, knowing that you belong to Him and seek after His wisdom in this time. “Let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts.” Colossians 3:15 It’s easy for us to attempt to hold everything together in our own strength and quickly become overwhelmed and unable to carry the weight of it all by ourselves. 1 Peter 5:7 says, “Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about you.” And in Matthew 19:24- 26 Jesus is talking with His disciples and shares the famous line, “It is easier for a camel to fit through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God.” Realizing that that would mean they wouldn’t be able to make it, surely frustrated and overwhelmed and hopeless, they responded, “Then who in the world can be saved?” This is the part I really want you to see. “Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible.” Camels can’t fit through the eye of a needle, people can’t work their way to perfection and we can’t handle all that life throws at us without God. What seems impossible to overcome are the things that glorify God the most. “God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.” If you need additional help or council please feel free to call in to the front desk at Calvary Church Albuquerque or email us back with any additional questions you might have. Thank you again for contacting us and God Bless. Guy Gemmer Ministry Intern Calvary Church

Thank you for takeing time out of your day to send me such a blessing. I have been reaching out and your the first and only who has attempted to help me understand. It means so much to me that i am in your prayers. I will keep your ministry in my prayers too. I have come to the understanding that God takes a person into the waters of anguish before he can reach a heart. If i have to be broken first to find his love i still want him. He is all i want truely. I will try to give my worries to him with faith and keep my head in his word. Please keep praying so that i may meet you in heaven one day. Sincerely, Lacee

I'm a 48yo veteran functioning addict on a heroin avalanche. I listened to this sermon 3hrs ago and as the flames of hope simmer like spot fires, the liquid sewage that spews from my frontal lobe is fast putting them out. I've heard every line, Jesus my friend? Yeah He also states that, "you are my friends if you do what I command." Which I repeatedly do not. Now every time I look to heaven and even think the word 'Lord' I know that even though He most certainly is the Lord, He is not 'my' Lord therefore the very utterance would be and is, an insult to His sovereignty. I'm at a complete loss, what do I do?

Hi Matthew and thank you for tuning in to Calvary Church with Skip Heitzig. Sorry to hear you are going through much, if you have not considered professional counseling you may want to as there are many biblically rooted counselors who live to serve people. Something to keep in mind is that the 12 disciples were never perfect, even when they were face to face with Jesus. And yet almost all of them died martyrs for the cause of Christ. We encourage you to keep it up and take it one day at a time. In 1 Tim 1:15 we read "This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief." And that is coming from the guy who wrote a little over half the New Testament, a man who himself saw the Heavenly Realms. Never forget He is with you and loves you very much. In addition we encourage you to attend our livestreams! We stream Wednesdays at 6:30, Saturdays at 6:30, and Sundays at 9 AM and 11 AM all times MST. We are praying for you and hope to see you soon! Blessings!

Thank you so much for this! It's the BEST Christian/addiction message I've seen. I struggle so hard with overcoming alcoholism - functioning alcoholism. This spoke so much truth to me. I've had people tell me that "if I really love Jesus, I won't want to drink." It made me feel like a failure. Like my faith wasn't enough. But, I DO love Jesus. I love Jesus so much! God is the reason that I want to quit! The world doesn't think I have a problem, but scripture says otherwise. I will fight this fight for God's glory... struggling all the way and trusting the processes. Blessings and thanks again.

Alfredo, Heroine is a very powerful drug and tremendously difficult to overcome. I want to encourage you to get into a program one that will supply the resources and support you will need to make that first most important break from the addiction. Alfredo, the Bible teaches, “If we Confess Our Sins, He is Faithful and Just to Forgive us Our Sins, and to Cleanse us from all Unrighteousness.” (1 John i.9, 10). The Bible says, ‘God has loved you with an everlasting love.’ (Jeremiah 31:3) This means there is nothing you can do to make God love you any more, and furthermore that there is nothing you can do to make God love you any less. Alfredo, the more you battle this issue and overcome the more comfort, confidence, and joy you will have, and peace in your relationship with Jesus Christ. Alfredo you know this. You also know in Christ and in the church, you have other brothers, spiritual brothers to know, connecting with church is important to overcoming this loneliness and struggle. That along with prayer and studying the word peace and fulfillment is found. Alfredo, there are things we need to stop and other things we need to start, or a better way to say this is, there are new things to practice into your life. There is a saying I always use, “Practice makes? _____, no not perfect, “Practice makes permanent.” We need to practice into permeance what we want to be a permanent part of our lives.” You practiced the old you so long (or all over again,) that he has become permanent in your life. You need a new practice (daily practice) to now replace the old habits. Alfredo, I agree as you have stated, with failure comes regrets... Correct, and know it is not easy to overcome our struggles and addictions, yet in persistence, consistency, continuous practice, discipline and exercise we get stronger, and in this developing strength, we get stronger in our walk, self-control and success. Pastor Skip has been solidly teaching God’s Word for many years and plans to continue to be faithful to the solid teaching of scripture you will be able to continue to grow and find encouragement in your walk, growth and knowledge of your faith and God through Jesus Christ and the Word. Alfredo you can also follow Pastor Skip’s teachings on our website: www.calvaryabq.org/ and get further information on our church. I further want to encourage you to listen to his teaching on, Jesus Loves Addicts - Luke 4:16-18; Matthew 11:19 - Skip Heitzig: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZmmG0ZKrobvHp84.html&lc=Ugw1n7Upzu1hP1DHQUF4AaABAg Alfredo, it is good to get to the point that you hate the sin/addiction that is plaguing your life. No change can take place unless there is a deep hate for our sin even as Jesus hates our sin. Alfredo you are taking a right step in reaching out for prayer and I want to further admonish and encourage you to add to that, intense prayer, reading of God’s word, exercise and practice self-control and discipline. Alfredo, please know you can overcome this addiction again, no, it won’t be easy, but it will be beneficial and assuring as well as faith building if you do. There are many resources that are available to you to help you to win the war with this struggle you will have to be brave enough to take advantage of them to help you. And you will when you are sick and tired enough of the battle. Here at Calvary, our church had classes that can be taken here, in these classes one can get connected to accountability and resources. Yet, even outside the church there are programs and ministries that can help in this area as well. There is no reason to struggle alone and continuously battle with relapse. Get connected brother. In the meantime, Alfredo please know we will pray for you. If I can help with further suggestions and resources, please let me know. Pastor Eric Lamb

You don't have to talk about your political views at Church, That is your private business. Talk to the Holy Spirit to guide you to a good Church. We need a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, not a religion. I go to a Catholic church and I respect people even if they have different political views. It is about learning about who God is. No person should judge, No person is better than the next. God bless you.
