Jesus Archaeology # 5 Exploring the Lost Cave of John the Baptizer

In this video I relate the remarkable discovery in 2000 of a forgotten Cave west of Jerusalem, at Suba, that has what might be the earliest art work related to the John the Baptist-Jesus movement--right outside John's village of Ein Kerem. What we found in our excavations (2000-2006) shed some remarkable new light on Jesus as the Baptizer and John as his teacher--teaming up together in their "End of the Age" campaign.

The carving of John didn't look like he had a beard. How cool would that have been to find?! That would be very exciting to see. The cut away was a really good. You woulda thought that they would've clean out the debris every once in a while. To see how fast it filled up in the Roman period. Very cool. ❤

I am a realist and therefore do not share views that we all know are frankly impossible. I believe all persons have a mother and father, and, much of Greek Methology is intertwined in religious beliefs for interesting stories. Thank you so much Dr. James Tabor for your remarkable life work in bringing the story of Jesus to real-life! I am obsessed and blessed, in discovering you discover Jesus.

I want to ask you: would you be okay if I make a trasnlation and dubb to spanish of some of your videos and upload it to a KZread channel? Spanish my native language, and I find that, in spanish, there is just little to no scholarly content similar to the quality of what you do. With all respect and admiration, I would love to have and answer from you.

WOW, Dr Tabor, I remember when the cave was discovered, I watched the early docs back then, I remember Simcha and Dr Gibson "breaking" into the cave, I think it blocked, and I couldn't wait until the discovery excavated and published. My dad and I discussed this for hours ( dad's where I get my curiosities from) dad was always looking for answers. He passed in 2016, but I still talk to him. ❤❤❤❤

I speculate that the foot ceremony was symbolic of taking the first step from the earthly world into the spiritual world; the Kingdom. The pouring of water over that foot was the "baptism of the Spirit" it receives from having entered into that new world. (Note that if you're sitting on that big rock at 31:15 you'd have a foot in each world.) The rest of the water may have been poured over the head. The vessel of water was possibly carried to the spot by the initiate, likely representing his spirit trapped in its earthly vessel. Pouring it out over himself may represent not only the freeing of his spirit but his transformation into a spiritual body. The vessel may have then been broken by the initiate to symbolize his decision and commitment to "leave his old body behind." Clothing may well have been involved also, as Dr. Tabor suggests. The saying he paraphrases, "When you strip naked without being ashamed, and throw your clothes on the ground and stomp on them as little children would, then you will see the Son of the Living One" (Gospel of Thomas saying 37) is part of an esoteric "put your clothes down and take them up again" symbology that I believe circulated in ancient times. For example, when Peter was fishing naked and wrapped his garment around himself upon seeing the risen Lord, and also at the stoning of Stephen when the participants temporarily "placed their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul." As Dr. Tabor said about something in this video, "Can I prove it? No." But it sure is fun to be like little children, make connections, and take your best guess. :-)

I have watched several videos about the Suba Cave. This one has the best schematics of the fully excavated cave with the stairways, ledges, and other infrastructure. I understand the springs from above fed the pool. I assume that flow would have been seasonal and hence the pool at times would have been low and at other times it would be overflowing. The other thought is was this cave likely expanded after John the Baptizer by his followers and used by them. Given the large amount of broken vessels, some, or maybe a lot of them, were broken after John.

The rite of baptism in the Armenian Apostolic Church to this day anoints/seals the candidate with holy oil in the Name of Jesus Christ after the water baptism not only on the feet but on the head, eyes, ears, nostrils, lips, chest, back, hands and feet. It is obvious that this is what they were doing yes even in the first century. That is where early Christianity would have developed that rite. The foot placement cutouts were to prevent falling from the slippery oil. The oil jugs were broken to prevent the mixing of Holy oil residue with non sacred food items through their reuse. It's that simple. Deacon Gregory

What an Amazing Discovery. John 10:40 tells us: 4"And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was first baptizing, and He stayed there" NASV when Jesus needed to elude an attempted arrest by those seeking to stone him. Where do you suppose this place was...and could it be this Cave??!

I have a question about the exiting of babies. (please excuse my verbiage to please the our Lord the KZread god that doesn't like violent acts to be spoken of) Was the first mass exit in the time of Moses not a cultic ritual due to beliefs of the first born being needed to be sacrificed? Is there a difference between that exit and the exit decreed by Herod the Great?

Just a thought : might there not have been those who saw the only two people from the 'old testament' era who never died -- Enoch and Elijah -- as having been reincarnated in the so-called (and supposed) Latter Days . . . with Elijah having been reborn as John the Baptizer (to fulfill the prophecy at the end of MALACHI, as Jesus seems to be not only implying but stating as fact) and with Enoch having been reborn first as Moses and then later (maybe) as James the Just? The exalted language used to describe both John and James -- in the canonical gospels and in at least one gnostic gospel source -- might be due to the belief that such exalted personages didn't (and were never meant to) remain up in 'heaven' with God and the angels, but would be sent back down to the world to do their part to help usher in the Kingdom. The only problem would be with James having been Enoch (in the antediluvian era) and Moses afterward, as Jesus is seen in the 'Transfiguration' together with Moses and Elijah : if Elijah became John the Baptizer, then his appearance at the Transfiguration would be in the guise of his former incarnation as Elijah, who had ascended to heaven in a fiery chariot way back when . . . but even if Moses had been Enoch in more ancient times, how could he appear with Elijah and Jesus at the Transfiguration if he had subsequently been incarnated as James the Just, who was still alive during Jesus' lifetime? Indeed, MATTHEW 17:1 says that ". . . after six days Jesus took with him Peter and JAMES and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain apart" (etc.). Was this 'James' his brother, James the Just, or a different James -- since the disciple next named is "John his brother" (i.e. John, the brother of James), who surely must be the "James the son of Zebedee [with] John his brother" mentioned in MATTHEW 4:21. In other words, the 'James' present with "John his brother" and with Peter at the Transfiguration was NOT the brother of Jesus, usually distinguished from other James as 'James the Just'. So . . . could the 'Moses' who appeared with 'Elijah' have been James the Just in the apparent guise of a prior incarnation? The book of REVELATION has that famous passage about the Two Witnesses who become martyred, and their 'secret identities' have often been speculated upon, with some suggesting that the only two characters from Hebrew tradition who had not died -- Enoch and Elijah -- ought to become those two future martyrs, so that they can endure the same fate as every other human being (even Jesus), a mortal death -- prior to becoming resurrected, of course. If, though, Enoch had been reborn as Moses, well, Moses is said to have died at the end of DEUTERONOMY, so that's a flaw in the 'logic' of this reincarnation paradigm. Still, one wonders what Jewish mystics might have been thinking 2,000 years ago, believing that famous Zaddiks from bible 'history' had never died, and perhaps had been sent back to the world as major 'players' in an End-Times drama . . .

i can appreciate your enthusiasm for this discovery and its treasurers, but i don't understand why people (thousands of people) would enter with oil of some kind in small containers (much too small for panning or collecting water) use them in a ritual then break them. plus there was incense? you don't need a ritual to collect water. you don't need a cave to baptize people. you only need water. and, I really don't understand why you didn't mention drugs? incense, thousands of small containers in a cave and rituals where jesus is floating in air. possibly another myth could be that people came to the cave to do a ritual of death and rebirth. I hear that story was going around back in those days. consider this, a poor man's Elusis. a pilgrim comes to the cave and is offered a cup of oil/ambrosia/nector/medicine/magic potion and that oil/liquid could be drunk, massaged into the skin or injected into the body. the cave door could be covered with a tarp and the incense could be marijuana. so you drink the drink, smell the smoke, hear the sermon and experience the god. clean up and get dunked in the water and return to your day to day a new born child of god. it is my understanding that people didn't drink just water back then they made beer because they lived longer that way. they certainly knew about marijuana and other intoxicants. I hear everyone was drunk back in the day. and Ezekel didn't see a wheel in the sky. he was flying high on those wheels with eyes.

He will be raised in Goraym of Galilea, and at the age of thirty he will start to preach in Jerusalem; contrary to the truth, he will proclaim that he is Christ, the living son of God. It is said that he will rebuild the Temple."[30]❤ Old babel religion polytheist doctrine of trinity yawn 🥱 For I was baptized at the hands of Yohanan, whom you all have heard of. And afterward, it seemed to me that the heavens opened, and a dove of peace descended upon me, and i heard a voice speaking the seventh verse of the second psalm: You are a son of God; today you have come alive. And after this, I felt driven by the spirit of God into the wilderness, where I was alone for many days, with the wild beasts, sorely troubled by this vision. It was as if Satan himself came to me and said, If you are the son of God, command that these stones become bread. But I told him, Man does not live by bread alone. Then again, I felt as if Satan came before me and said, All the kingdoms of the earth I will give to you, if you will fall down and worship me. Again, I told him, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve, and keep his commandments. And finally, I felt as if Satan came to me one more time and said, If you are the son of God, jump off the top of the temple, for the angels of the Lord will surely bear you up. But I told him also, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. So I realized that the reign of God did not consist of wealth and possessions, but of keeping his commandments; nor did it consist of power over kingdoms and armies, but in following in all his ways; nor can it be evidenced by signs and wonders, even by miracles, but by living by the Torah and the prophets. But what are God's commandments? and what are his ways? They are, to love your neighbor as yourself, and to open your hand to the poor, and to loose the bands of oppression, and to undo heavy burdens. And they are more, they are to love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt, and to love your enemies, for they are your neighbors. They are to deal your bread to the hungry, and bring the homeless under your roof. The children of Ethiopia, and the Samaritans, and the Jews are alike in God's eyes; and the amme ha'eretz are worth as much to God as a rich publican or Pharisee. Therefore I say unto you, let God reign in your hearts, and do not trouble yourself over who wears a metal crown. Do not burden yourself with wealth and possessions, for if you let anyone starve you are letting God starve. This is the meaning of the law and the prophets.Have we not all one Father? hath not one God created us all? And it may have been Yeshua's references to God as "Father" which led his later followers to label him the "Son of God", in spite of Yeshua's own rebuke of that label, as we have seen; and the first two words of the most famous prayer attributed to Yeshua reveal the universality of his concept: Our father... and every single time Yeshua speaks of God in the Great Sermon, as well as many other places in the gospels, he uses the phrase your father, thus including all his hearers in sonship with God.term "son of God" is used in the Hebrew Bible as another way to refer to humans who have a special relationship with God. In Exodus, the nation of Israel is called God's firstborn son.[2] Solomon is also called "son of God".[3][4] Angels, just and pious men, and the kings of Israel are all called "sons of God."[5]reputation was there also, and the inhabitants gathered in the marketplace to see this man who had created such a stir in Galilee. He probably repeated many of his teachings to them also, since it is doubtful that he rejected the Samaritans like the rest of the Jews did. And we are told that a lawyer asked him what he should do to gain eternal life. Yeshua asked him in turn what he found written in the Torah, and the man answered with the two Great Commandments: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God, with everything you've got; and, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Then Yeshua nodded and said succinctly: Very good; just do this, and you shall find life. For he truly declared, saying: ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh unto the Father except he shall do as I have done.’Worship According to Yeshua, true worship takes place in the soul of the person, not under the provisions of a religious authority, nor at a designated church, synagogue or temple. True worship is not associated with a place or person outside of yourself. Yeshua taught that anyone could approach God, and that people have within themselves a power that will connect them to God, independent of anyone who claims to be a prophet or representative of God (Y:4:59-65; Y:34:50-56).Yeshua Bar Yosef Ossuary 80/503 "Yeshua bar Yosef” - “Jesus, Son of Joseph” It is the plainest of the ten ossuaries found in the tomb, a modest coffin, perhaps made in haste. Alarmingly, there is a large cross mark right next to the name “Jesus.” A cross, deliberately carved. The archaeologists, however, immediately and ever since, dismissed this as a mason’s mark. Besides, they say, Christians didn’t use crosses until the time of Constantine in the 4th century. This “Jesus, Son of Joseph” ossuary couldn’t belong to that Jesus, son of Joseph. Back in 1926, another “Jesus, son of Joseph” ossuary was discovered languishing in the basement of what is now the Rockefeller Museum-by none other that Eleazer Sukenik, the archaeologist famous for his 1948 discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Hebrew University professor did not publicize his astonishing find until 1931 at a conference in Berlin. The news made headlines around the world. And then the world forgot all about it. Today, that same ossuary is on display at the Israel Museum. It is in no way connected with Jesus of Nazareth but instead is on display to send a message: don’t get excited if you find archaeological mention of any “Jesus.” The name is common. It was a mistanslation by the Greeks as well (that's how the Pauline theory came to be might I add)
