If I had a nickel for everytime Fantano reviewed a pop artist with a large queer fanbase that he previously gave AOTY to, and said Lightning was his least fav song, I'd have two nickels. Isn't a lot, but weird it happened twice...

Let’s be honest - if “Pearls” were a Lizzo song, it would be #1 everywhere. It’s a pop smash, and her record company needs to promote getting it on radio in the States so that she gets the attention to ensure she gets her flowers for this album. It is 40 minutes of the most fun you’ll have listening to an album. I think it’s more fearless and funky than WYP, and while WYP is a slow burner that will not let go of you when it catches you, this grabs you immediately and doesn’t let go of you. From the 60s mod of Shake the Bottle (that will no doubt become a drag staple), to the sweaty four-on-the-floor freneticism of Freak Me Now (and the transition from Beautiful People into FMN is god-tier), this album is THAT BITCH. No one is doing it like Jessie. AOTY and it’s not even close.

Good point, that’s gonna bug me now 😅 Kinda like how Britney Spears’ “Break the Ice” from Blackout is so obviously the perfect album opener because it starts with the line, “it’s been a while… I shouldn’t have kept you waiting… but I’m here now” (when the album was released, it was after her longest gap between albums at the time at 4 years) plus it’s literally called BREAK THE ICE. Yet it’s fourth track. I mean… come on. Wtf.

My biggest problem is the sequencing. The album is too frontloaded and she stuck such an obvious ending song in the middle. After Begin Again every song after feels minuscule in comparison. If she had finished the album with it and put some of the weakest tracks in the middle it would be such a stronger album.

What's Your Pleasure felt like much-needed escapism during the height of the pandemic, like you're frantically trying to dance all the tension away. That! Feels Good! is more like a triumphant return from exile or isolation where you're just happy to be alive and seeing the world again. Maybe I'm off base but that's what it feels like.

That's exactly how I see it. When I think about WYP? I can't help but feel like it's an attempt to capture a moment in time where things were better (like someone trying to recreate the feelings of the past, but with a sense of uncertainty). TFG! feels like a reminder of the way things used to be, but with a renewed sense of appreciation for what we have now. Idk.

Jessie Ware has done it again and can now easily lay claim to putting out two of this decades best records. There is a definite switch to a more Motown funk / soul / R&B disco vibe than what she presented on "What's Your Pleasure?" so its great to see that Jessie is not simply remaking "What's Your Pleasure? Part II" for 2023. I've given it a few good listens already over the weekend and I do agree with you that I don't feel like it quite hits the highs of its predecessor (which in my eyes was a remarkable album, 2020's finest in fact), "That! Feels Good!" is still a darn good album. One of the years finest in fact. Between Caroline Polachek and Jessie Ware, 2023's pop lanes have two new ruling Queens.

WYP imprinted on my soul like no other album has but I am growing to love T!FG because its a reminder that Jessie is not afraid of reinventing herself even after creating something soooo good, i think she could've made an evermore to folklore type of project, but both albums WYP and T!FG are so fundamentally unique; in WYP she asks the question and sets an expectant tone full of mistery and passion but now that question is answered in T!FG the tone is so ecstatic like a fancy luxurious celebration

Production and mixing on this is absolutely solid. But its a 7/10 for me. Good songs, catchy but not weird enough for my personal taste in dance music. It has its moments, but doesn’t experiment enough or have unique qualities. Its just plain good old “Chic” esque songs but with immaculate production. Takes the best songs from Sharon Redd, Sharon Brown, Jocelyn Brown, Cerrone, Carrie Lucas, Evelyn King, Sister Sledge etc. If she had made something more along the lines of Claudja Barry, Chaz Jankel, Ingrid Mansfield, Freeez, Tamiko Jones, Convertion, Letta Mbulu, Nohelani Cypriano etc. Not necessarily sound like but use their mentality. These artists back then created dance music that is not only catchy but dazzles you with interesting experimentation that really makes the songs unique. If I was digging digitally or at a record store and came across That Feels Good, I’d be barely hesitant to buy cause it feels just a tad generic.

Jessie Ware really nailed it again. Every single song is unmatched. I haven’t stopped listening front to back. She is giving the people what they want, and more. I am honestly in awe of her. Is already my favorite album of the year next to Kali Uchis’ “Red Moon In Venus”.

I have listened to this constantly since it was released last week. No fillers, every song could be a single- it's that good! I so hope she manages to break the US with this album as it's pure class. 💕

I've only listened all the way through once, so I really hope it goes on me, but it seems like a sharp drop in quality from WYP for me and I am stunned everyone seems to dig it so much, even Fantano.

Selfishly, I wish Begin again was the song that closed the album, and another bombastic song like this was added to the middle. Like fantano said, I feel like the Album cools down after this.

I think my issue with this album is that it didn’t offer as much sensuality as WYP? - what really sold me on tracks like Spotlight, The Kill, or the title track was how sensual and romantic and passionate those tracks were, while That! Feels Good! is a lot more on the nose, and packs a bigger punch which I’m not sure I’m liking. It’s a great, fun disco album, maybe just not for me. Another strange issue with this album is it’s tracklist - I feel like a lot of the greater tracks could’ve been more spread out, and Begin Again most definitely deserved to be the ending cut. It’d feel a lot more balanced if that was the case. My favorite tracks are definitely either Begin Again or Hello Love, though Freak Me Now and That! Feels Good! are great when I’m in the mood. Totally get why you didn’t like Beautiful People, it’s a hit or miss depending on who you are. 8/10 makes sense, just not for me. I’d give it a decent to strong 7.
