If I had a nickel for everytime Fantano reviewed a pop artist with a large queer fanbase that he previously gave AOTY to, and said Lightning was his least fav song, I'd have two nickels. Isn't a lot, but weird it happened twice...

Jessie's Lightning is superior btw. It's one of the best songs. Pearls is the worst (still good though.)
Fun fact: Kylie Minogue and Roisin Murphy amongst others provided background vocals on the track "That!Feels Good".

@@camilofajardo9199 The lukewarm reception of her and 2nd and 3rd album was the reason she was thinking What’s Your Pleasure would’ve been her last album. But because of the fun she had recording it, and the incredibly insane reception of it, she decided to keep going.

Let’s be honest - if “Pearls” were a Lizzo song, it would be #1 everywhere. It’s a pop smash, and her record company needs to promote getting it on radio in the States so that she gets the attention to ensure she gets her flowers for this album. It is 40 minutes of the most fun you’ll have listening to an album. I think it’s more fearless and funky than WYP, and while WYP is a slow burner that will not let go of you when it catches you, this grabs you immediately and doesn’t let go of you. From the 60s mod of Shake the Bottle (that will no doubt become a drag staple), to the sweaty four-on-the-floor freneticism of Freak Me Now (and the transition from Beautiful People into FMN is god-tier), this album is THAT BITCH. No one is doing it like Jessie. AOTY and it’s not even close.

Good point, that’s gonna bug me now 😅 Kinda like how Britney Spears’ “Break the Ice” from Blackout is so obviously the perfect album opener because it starts with the line, “it’s been a while… I shouldn’t have kept you waiting… but I’m here now” (when the album was released, it was after her longest gap between albums at the time at 4 years) plus it’s literally called BREAK THE ICE. Yet it’s fourth track. I mean… come on. Wtf.
@Dimasterim

My biggest problem is the sequencing. The album is too frontloaded and she stuck such an obvious ending song in the middle. After Begin Again every song after feels minuscule in comparison. If she had finished the album with it and put some of the weakest tracks in the middle it would be such a stronger album.
@muca3000

maybe Jessie wanted a change fro her last album, too obvious to close with a song with the same vibe to Remember where you are. but i agree with you, Begin Again must be the close song.

Right?!? Just like how Remember Where You Are was the absolute perfect closer to the last record, she could have easily done that again on this one.
I think What’s Your Pleasure was more consistent but the highs on this album were higher. I loved that she made the production even more lush and bombastic than the last album.

What's Your Pleasure felt like much-needed escapism during the height of the pandemic, like you're frantically trying to dance all the tension away. That! Feels Good! is more like a triumphant return from exile or isolation where you're just happy to be alive and seeing the world again. Maybe I'm off base but that's what it feels like.

That's exactly how I see it. When I think about WYP? I can't help but feel like it's an attempt to capture a moment in time where things were better (like someone trying to recreate the feelings of the past, but with a sense of uncertainty). TFG! feels like a reminder of the way things used to be, but with a renewed sense of appreciation for what we have now. Idk.
Free Yourself is one of the biggest Instant earworm classics I’ve heard in so long, another great effort from Jessie
This album feels like a natural progression from WYP?, it doesn’t try to replicate it and proves that Jessie is no one trick pony. It trades in the electronic synths for a more organic groove led and soulful instrumentation.

Jessie Ware has done it again and can now easily lay claim to putting out two of this decades best records. There is a definite switch to a more Motown funk / soul / R&B disco vibe than what she presented on "What's Your Pleasure?" so its great to see that Jessie is not simply remaking "What's Your Pleasure? Part II" for 2023. I've given it a few good listens already over the weekend and I do agree with you that I don't feel like it quite hits the highs of its predecessor (which in my eyes was a remarkable album, 2020's finest in fact), "That! Feels Good!" is still a darn good album. One of the years finest in fact. Between Caroline Polachek and Jessie Ware, 2023's pop lanes have two new ruling Queens.
WYP imprinted on my soul like no other album has but I am growing to love T!FG because its a reminder that Jessie is not afraid of reinventing herself even after creating something soooo good, i think she could've made an evermore to folklore type of project, but both albums WYP and T!FG are so fundamentally unique; in WYP she asks the question and sets an expectant tone full of mistery and passion but now that question is answered in T!FG the tone is so ecstatic like a fancy luxurious celebration

Obviously an 8 is an incredibly high score but this shit is definitely a 9 at the bare minimum. I think this is a case where Anthony’s expectations were stratospheric so it inevitably feels like a bit of a comedown after WYP. But this record is even better than that one for me. Also to call the line “shake it ‘til the pearls fall off” silly is just… silly. That’s a great, fun, exuberant line.

This album is awesome, I agree it's not as great as Whats Your Pleasure but it's hard for a musician to sound so fresh and original after you just released your greatest album, and still so Jessie manages to pull out a great collection of songs. I love seeing her at her peak. Anyone who has the chance to see her live should do, it's a never ending party.
You said you’re torn on Shake The Bottle so I’ll make the decision for you - you love it. First listen was a little surprising as you’re not sure where it’s headed but when you listen to it in context of the album and remember Jessie saying this album was supposed to be a little dirtier, you realize it’s pure camp and nods to iconic queer dance anthems.

Pearls is just one of my favorite songs of the year so far! it’s a pop masterpiece
Production and mixing on this is absolutely solid. But its a 7/10 for me. Good songs, catchy but not weird enough for my personal taste in dance music. It has its moments, but doesn’t experiment enough or have unique qualities. Its just plain good old “Chic” esque songs but with immaculate production. Takes the best songs from Sharon Redd, Sharon Brown, Jocelyn Brown, Cerrone, Carrie Lucas, Evelyn King, Sister Sledge etc. If she had made something more along the lines of Claudja Barry, Chaz Jankel, Ingrid Mansfield, Freeez, Tamiko Jones, Convertion, Letta Mbulu, Nohelani Cypriano etc. Not necessarily sound like but use their mentality. These artists back then created dance music that is not only catchy but dazzles you with interesting experimentation that really makes the songs unique. If I was digging digitally or at a record store and came across That Feels Good, I’d be barely hesitant to buy cause it feels just a tad generic.
If it was called That! Feels Great! you would've given it a 10
Easy 9 for me Fantastic fucking record Her vocals on Begin Again and Pearls are just disco bliss
Easy 9/10 for me, every song is a mainstay in my ever growing playlist. Beats are fantastic, and the lyrics remain sensual and cheeky throughout. Begin Again is definitely my fav, but that's like picking out a slightly larger diamond from a pile of diamonds!

I like this new album better as whole than What's Your Pleasure, but my favorite isolated tracks are still Spotlight, Ooh La La, Pale Blue Light and that freaking Title Track 😍😍😍
I can't stop listening to Hello Love, my favorite song of the year!
I've only listened all the way through once, so I really hope it goes on me, but it seems like a sharp drop in quality from WYP for me and I am stunned everyone seems to dig it so much, even Fantano.
Was listening to this album on my drive to work yesterday as a lightning storm was in front of me, seemed very serendipitous
Damn, Beautiful People is one of my faves. Though I agree with Shake the Bottle and Lightning but they're still very enjoyable songs
At this point, looking at his least favourite track on Crash and here, I'm wondering if Fantano has a pathological fear of lightning
Yay! I love this album. Although Shake the Bottle would have been in my favourite tracks - such a tune
Selfishly, I wish Begin again was the song that closed the album, and another bombastic song like this was added to the middle. Like fantano said, I feel like the Album cools down after this.
She is the moment, now come on now
I think my issue with this album is that it didn’t offer as much sensuality as WYP? - what really sold me on tracks like Spotlight, The Kill, or the title track was how sensual and romantic and passionate those tracks were, while That! Feels Good! is a lot more on the nose, and packs a bigger punch which I’m not sure I’m liking. It’s a great, fun disco album, maybe just not for me. Another strange issue with this album is it’s tracklist - I feel like a lot of the greater tracks could’ve been more spread out, and Begin Again most definitely deserved to be the ending cut. It’d feel a lot more balanced if that was the case. My favorite tracks are definitely either Begin Again or Hello Love, though Freak Me Now and That! Feels Good! are great when I’m in the mood. Totally get why you didn’t like Beautiful People, it’s a hit or miss depending on who you are. 8/10 makes sense, just not for me. I’d give it a decent to strong 7.
I really love lightning
Swap Begin Again and Lightning on the tracklist placement and it’s a light 9 for me
Hello Love is the best song she’s ever made😭
Agree with the review in general, but Shake the Bottle is so good, witty and flirty, a definite highlight
Jessie vocals are out of this world!! But as we are talking about disco anthems - did you ever consider to do review of *Kylie Minogue* album *'DISCO'* ?? 😎
3:34 I need this as an endless loop.
Anthony’s voice kind of sounds like thundercats when he sings
Pearls may be SOTY and this may be AOTY
Although not as great as what’s your pleasure it still comes pretty close. I’m feeling a very light 9/10
I find it interesting that Bebe Rexha’s new album was released the same day as this and is SO similar, right down to the color of the cover art! You may want to do a comparison video between the two.
I! Feel Like Shit!
“Shake the bottle” sounds like something the countess Luu Ann would do
Freak Me Out...better be a single! A monster smash of 2023 (in an ideal world). I love this album more than WYP
Fine, I’m going to go give it a listen
POP GIRLIES WISH THEY COULD DISCO LIKE HER
Completly agree with your review. What’s Your Pleasure was so remarkable, with so many memorable songs, and even though That Feels Good has great tracks, none of them stick out with me like the ones from the previous record.
